How to remove red underline in word

How to remove red underline in word: All versions of the word processor from Microsoft have approximately the same set of features and capabilities, but their graphic design is different. For this reason, a detailed description of how to eliminate red highlights of words will only be provided for programs that were released from 2013 to 2021. For other versions, distinctive features will be indicated.

How to remove red underline in word

Method 1: Correcting errors

Red underlines in Microsoft Word indicate the presence of spelling errors made when writing the text. To get rid of them, you will need to make changes to the material. You can do this manually by rereading each word and making corrections that comply with the rules of the Russian language. But in case of difficulties, you can use the hints from the program that appear when you call the context menu of the selected word. To do this, right-click on the error and select the appropriate spelling from the list that appears.

If there are few errors in the document, this method is a priority. But if you need to process a large amount of poorly written text, we recommend using a special menu that allows you to quickly make changes. First, go to the tab “Review” , then on the left side of the toolbar, expand the drop-down list item “Spelling” , in which select the option “Spelling” .

After the panel appears on the right, you must select the appropriate option to replace the misspelled word. This is done in the list “Offers” . The cursor will then automatically jump to the next error, which must be dealt with in the same way.

Note! If the word was initially spelled correctly, but the program highlighted it in red, you will need to add it to the internal dictionary. After that, the underline will disappear and will not appear in the future. To do this, on the “Spelling” panel , click on the item “Add to dictionary” .

Method 2: Ignore Errors

If the highlighted word is intentionally spelled incorrectly and there is no need to add it to the dictionary, then a pass must be made to eliminate the red underline. This can be done in two ways. The first involves calling the context menu with the right mouse button, followed by clicking on the item “Skip all” . After that, all words with the selected spelling will no longer be highlighted in the open document. It’s worth noting that this won’t spread to other Microsoft Word text files.

The same procedure can be performed through the “Spelling” menu , which is relevant if there are many errors.

More details about ways to skip errors are described in another article on our website. If in the process of performing the steps described above there were difficulties, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with it.

Method 3: Completely disable spell checking

When checking spelling and grammar of text in a document is not required, to get rid of red underlines, deactivate the corresponding option in the program options.

Attention! The instructions given in this method are not recommended for use if the quality of the material is important. The described actions will permanently disable the function of highlighting incorrectly written words and sentences.

    1. Open any document in the program, then go to the tab “File” located on the top panel.
    1. From the main menu, click on the “Settings” item located at the bottom of the sidebar on the left.
    1. Go to the “Spelling” section and in the “When correcting spelling in Word” block , uncheck the item “Check spelling while typing” .If necessary, you can do the same with the options “Mark grammatical errors while typing” and “Also check grammar while checking spelling” to remove text highlights of all types and colors. Finally, click the OK button to save your changes.

Note! It is also possible to turn off underlines only in an open document or in all subsequent ones that will be created. This is done in the block “File exclusions” . Select the appropriate option from the drop-down list, and then check the box next to the line “Hide spelling errors in this document only” .

Option 2: Microsoft Word 2007 – 2010

Most of the actions described earlier apply to the 2007-2010 version of Microsoft Word, so the following will discuss the distinctive features, which are mostly associated with discrepancies in graphic design.

For example, instead of the Spelling sidebar , a window of the same name appears that provides the same functionality. Accordingly, it can be used to replace an erroneous word, add it to the dictionary or skip it.

Completely disabling the automatic spell check function is similar, but launching a window with these options is different. To do this, you need to open the main menu by clicking on the Microsoft Office logo, and then click on the button “Word Options” .

Option 3: Microsoft Word 2003

In the version of the Microsoft Word 2003 office program, the cardinal differences are in the graphic design and the location of some interface elements. For example, to call the “Spelling” window , you need to expand the “Tools” menu and select the appropriate item.

Otherwise, skipping errors, replacing the spelling and adding a word to the dictionary is similar to Microsoft Word 2007-2010.

Complete disabling of automatic text checking for spelling errors is carried out differently than in other versions of the office processor. To do this, do the following:

    1. Expand the “Tools” menu and select the “Options” option .
  1. In the window that appears, go to the “Spelling” tab and in the “Spelling” block , uncheck the item “automatically check spelling” . After that, click on the “OK” button to save your changes. If you want to make sure that errors are not underlined with a red line only in an open document, you should activate the option “do not highlight misspelled words” .
