What is the Green Pass and how it works

Before getting to the heart of this guide and explaining, in practice, how to apply for the Green Pass, let me give you some more information about this document.

The Green Pass, also known as COVID-19 Green Certification, is a certification that was created on a proposal from the European Commission, in order to facilitate the safe circulation of EU citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In practice, it is a digital certification (which can also be printed on paper) which in Italy is issued directly by the Ministry of Health starting from 18 June 2021; the Green Pass consists of a QR code and a qualified electronic seal and is valid both at national and European level.

In detail, the Green Pass represents a system to simplify access to COVID-free events and facilities (such as RSAs and hospitals, for example) on a national scale, as well as to facilitate travel between Italian regions belonging to different groups of health risk. Moreover, starting from 1 July 2021, the Green Pass can be used as a certification tool throughout the European Community and in the Schengen area, thus facilitating travel between the various nations that are part of it.

The Green Certificate is automatically issued for all Italian citizens (or with a valid residence permit) with a health card, following the completion of the vaccination course / receiving one in dose, after an antigenic/molecular buffer with negative results at an accredited laboratory, or following the successful and certified recovery from the COVID-19 disease.

The duration of the Green Pass varies according to the nature of the certification itself: at the time of writing this guide, the “deadlines” are as follows.

  • Green Pass vaccine by the end of the cycle: is released a few hours after administration of 2 in / single dose of the vaccine, and has a duration of nine months.
  • Green Pass vaccination for 1st dose: is released about 15 days after administration of the 1 in the vaccine dose, only if provision is made for the next dose and is valid until the date of completion of the vaccination course.
  • Green Pass for negative swab: it is issued immediately after the swab result and is valid for 48 hours.
  • Green Pass for recovery from COVID-19: it is issued following the certification of successful recovery from the COVID-19 disease and is valid for 6 months (or other period expressly indicated in the certification).

For more information, I invite you to read the answers to frequently asked questions on COVID-19 Green Certification available on the Government website.

As you will soon discover, the Green Certification is issued in the form of a digital QR code to be shown, together with the health card and a valid identity document, whenever you need it; it is however possible, in any case, to create a replacement paper copy to be used if, for example, you do not have compatible digital media with you.

How to apply for a vaccination Green Pass

Having made the necessary clarifications, the time has come to explain how to request a vaccination Green Pass : I anticipate immediately that, in general, the instructions are also valid for obtaining another type of Green Certification (for recovery, or per buffer).

The Green Pass management platform is unique at the national level, which means, in practice, that the steps to follow to apply for Green Pass Lombardiatake Green Pass Sicilytake Green Pass Piedmont and so on, are almost identical and do not vary between the Italian Regions / Autonomous Provinces.

In order to be able to obtain the Green Certification, it is essential to enter an identification number relating to the same within one of the recognized national platforms: EU Digital Covid Certificate website, Immuni app or IO app. The identification code of the vaccination Green Pass, called AUTHCODE, is delivered in a completely automatic way, by e-mail or SMS, directly by the Ministry of Health, according to the times seen above.

As for the other types of Green Pass, it is necessary to use the CUN / NFRE codes, respectively, for the molecular and antigenic swabs (both are available on the document indicating the result of the swab), or the NUGC code, available on the issued report. by the ASL / ATS following the certified recovery from COVID 19.

In addition to the Identification Code for obtaining the Green Certification, it is also necessary to provide, at the request stage, the last 8 digits of the identification number of the health card, together with the expiry date of the same. If the user does not have a health card, he will instead be required to indicate the type ( identity carddriving license, etc.) and the document number provided at the time of the swab or certification of recovery from COVID-19.

This information is not necessary if you use the IO app with SPID access: the Green Pass, in fact, will be automatically available inside it, without having to enter anything.

Once in possession of the necessary, it is possible to request the Green Pass “in person” at the pharmacy or at your local ASL / ATS. In addition, the document can also be requested online, through the platforms accredited by the Government, in the manner described below.

Website

Applying for the Green Pass through the EU digital COVID certificate website is child’s play: first of all, connect to the Web page indicated a little while ago, using any browser for computer, smartphone or tablet and fill out the form proposed with the requested information.

First of all, indicate if you are a user with a health card, or a user without a health card, by clicking on the dedicated box; in the first case, you must specify the last 8 digits of the identification number of the health card and the expiry date of the same, in the appropriate text fields.

If, on the other hand, you have chosen to identify yourself without a health card, you will need to indicate the type and number of the document provided at the time of the tampon or certification of healing in the dedicated boxes.

Once this is done, use the Identification type drop-down menu to specify the type of code in your possession ( AUTHCODE, in the case of the vaccine Green Pass), type the identification number of the Green Certification in the field provided, and, finally, specify the Language certification (Italian / English, Italian / English / German or Italian / English / French) using the appropriate drop-down menu.

Finally, enter the security code you see on the screen in the text box Enter the characters you see and press the Retrieve certification button, in order to access the area dedicated to your Green Pass. Finally, click on the Download certification button, to obtain the complete Green Pass (thus containing all the information in clear text) in PDF format, or on Download QRCode, to download only the QR code of the certification (always in PDF format). That’s all!

To complete the Immuni configuration phase, press the Got it button twice in a row; if you need further clarification regarding the procedure just seen, I refer you to reading my tutorial on how to download the Immuni app.

Once at the home screen of the app, tap on the Home tab (below), tap the box called EU Digital Covid Certificate and then the Retrieve EU Digital Covid Certificate button, in order to move on to the data entry phase.

The game is practically done: now, select the type of code (eg. AUTHCODE) from the appropriate drop-down menu and enter the code, the last 8 digits of the health card and the expiry date of the same in the appropriate fields.

app IO

The procedures for obtaining the Green Pass through the IO app are different from what we have seen above: it is not in fact necessary to make any request, as the certification is automatically available within the application.

How do you say? Haven’t downloaded and configured IO yet? No problem, I’ll explain how to do it. To begin with, download the app in question from the Play Store or the App Store, install it and, after opening it, choose the access method you prefer: Enter with SPID or Enter with CIE, depending on the means of identification in your possession; in the case of the Electronic Identity Card, you must have a device equipped with an NFC chip and the PIN associated with the card.

In any case, if you have chosen to log in with SPID, enter your identity credentials in the appropriate fields, press the Enter with SPID button and complete the second authentication factor, using the official app provided from the Identity Provider or by entering the disposable code received via SMS. Finally, you consent to the sending of personal data by tapping on the appropriate button.

To log in with CIE, however, you will be asked to specify the 8-digit PIN associated with the card and, subsequently, to bring it closer to the device.

In any case, once you have completed the login procedure, press the Accept button, choose an unlock code to protect the app and, if you wish, activate access via facial recognition/fingerprint authorizing the use of biometric authentication. In case of doubts or problems, I suggest you read my tutorial on how to enter the IO app, in which I have given you all the details of the procedure.

After logging into the IO app, retrieving the Green Pass is a breeze: tap the Messages tab of the IO app, locate the notification relating to the COVID-19 Green Certification and tap the View button to open the QR code of the certificate.

At this point, to download the certification, press the Save button and choose whether to store it within the IO app, so as to be able to access it even in the absence of a connection, or save it as an image in the device memory, by tapping on the option specific. To view the details of the Green Pass, tap the Details button instead.
