Application Configuration Missing Error When Installing Steam Application
Recently, many Steam users, when preparing files for installing games, have encountered a problem in the form of an error “There is no application configuration.” Sometimes, after the corresponding message, a request appears: continue or complete the installation. However, choosing “continue” starts an endless installation. At the same time, a configuration error occurs with many popular titles, for example: counter strike: global offensive, Call of Duty Black Ops 2, DOTA 2, Total War: SHOGUN 2, etc. It looks like this:
Forum users shared ways to effectively solve this problem.
Delete appinfo.vdf file
One of the Valve employees fixed an error related to the application configuration in this way.
- Turn off Steam and make sure there is no icon in the tray.
- Press the Win + E keys and go to the explorer.
- In the address bar, you need to enter C: Program Files (x86) Steamappcache.
- Hit Enter.
- Next, you need to find the file “appinfo.vdf”. Right-click on it and select “Delete”.
Now open Steam directly (preferably as an admin) and re-download the problematic game.
Steam update
If Steam does not update automatically when you start, then do it manually.
- Make sure your PC is connected to the network and the Internet is working properly. Close if Steam is enabled.
- Then run again. If there are no updates, the Steam service has a forced update function. To activate, open on Steam and select the appropriate command from the menu:
- If updates are available, the installation will start automatically. When the PC is installed the most current version, the program will report: “Your Steam client does not need to be updated.”
Reinstalling Steam
You can delete it by a standard method, but it is better to do it without losing your video games. Steam must be turned off during the reinstallation procedure. When doing this, be sure to check the presence of processes in the task manager.
- Go to the “Details” section.
- In the Name column, look for running processes that begin with the word Steam.
- If present they need to be completed. Highlight and press the End Task / Finish button. If there are no open processes, then move on.
- Locate the folder where Steam is installed. On the shortcut RMB, select “Properties”. Usually the program is installed in C: Program Files (x86) Steam.
- Find the steamapps folder, which contains the user and game files. Copy the entire folder to a hard drive that has free space. Thus, you will save everything you need so as not to download again.
- Go to the Steam program folder – you need to delete everything except: steamapps, config, userdata, Steam.exe.
- Launch Steam (the Internet must be connected) using the shortcut or the Steam.exe file from the saved folder.
After the process is complete, the reinstallation is complete. The “Missing Application Configuration” error should no longer bother you.
Disable syncing with Steam Cloud in game settings
If the problem with the application configuration was not resolved using the previous methods, follow these steps.
- Start Steam, go to the library. Click on the problematic game with RMB. You need a “properties” section.
- Go to the “updates” tab and check the synchronization settings by going to the appropriate section.
- If there is a checkmark next to “Enable synchronization with Steam Cloud” – uncheck it.
Everything! Run.
