How to make an experience farm in Minecraft

Minecraft, the well-known sandbox video game developed by Mojang, is an international phenomenon that involves several generations of players (and even consoles). Think that someone started playing Minecraft in its early days, in 2009, and is continuing to live new adventures even today, in the famous world of “cubes”. On the other hand, in the title of Mojang the limit is the imagination and between the user’s creativity and packages made by the community, the amount of content available to the player is almost infinite.

For this reason, even after hundreds (if not thousands) of hours of gameplay, there is always something new to discover. For example, today I will explain to you in detail how to make an experience farm in Minecraft so that you can progress even faster in your adventure than you usually do. I will obviously not fail to show you all the possibilities offered by the game from this point of view and there will also be a way to talk about content created by the community and designed to improve the experience.

Courage: why are you still standing there motionless in front of the screen? Do you want to build your own experience farm in Minecraft? In my opinion, yes, since you have come this far and are reading this tutorial with interest. Come on then, all you have to do is get comfortable and follow the quick directions below. I can assure you that the guide is not very difficult to follow, so you will just have to take some time for yourself and you will certainly be able to reach your goal. That said, there is nothing left for me to do, except wish you good reading and have fun!

Preliminary information

Before going into the details of the procedure on how to make an experience farm on Minecraft, I think it may interest you to know more about the usefulness of this structure. Of course, the details I’m about to give you refer to the game’s Survival mode.

Well, in case you don’t know, in Mojang’s title the experience is provided to the user in the form of globes, which are generated when the player defeats some mobs (enemies controlled by the AI) or some other user or performs other activities at the inside the game (from digging minerals, excluding iron and gold, to using the furnace ).

The experience is indicated by a green bar at the bottom of the Minecraft screen (just below the hearts that indicate life) and must be “spent” for spells and for the repair and naming of objects through the anvil. To give you a concrete example, “enchanting” a pickaxe could cost you 15 experience levels. If you were 20, after doing this, you will be left with 5 .

Oh, I almost forgot: be careful not to be defeated too much, as the character’s death causes the loss of a certain amount of experience.

In short, experience is very important in Minecraft and can allow you to obtain “services” that you would not otherwise be able to access. For this reason, many users want to build an experience farm, which is a structure capable of generating experience automatically, without the player having to worry too much. There are several ways of understanding experience farms. For example, there are those who slide enemies from a high height to eliminate them by themselves, gaining their experience. For more details on that possibility, I invite you to check out my tutorial on how to create a Mob Spawner in Minecraft.

In this guide, however, we are going to endlessly obtain the experience generated by the use of furnaces, creating an automatic green dye generator. In fact, I believe that this is the best way to generate experience. Also, it works on many versions of Minecraft, as at the time of writing it has not yet been “banned” in any way by the developers.

How to make a Minecraft experience farm

After explaining to you how the experience in Minecraft works and what an experience farm is, I’d say it’s time to take action and build this structure.

I recommend that you try this creation in Creative mode initially, as it is long to make and easy to go wrong. Therefore, use the instructions below to familiarize yourself with the necessary materials and test their operation. In this way, you will not waste useful resources and you will be able to build the structure without too many problems even in Survival.

The first thing to do is to place 5 iron blocks (you can also use another material), one on top of the other, on the ground.

Then, break the 4 blocks below, leaving only the top one “in flight”.

Then place a sticky piston on top of the previously placed block and put another iron block on it.

At this point, place a block of slime in front of the sticky piston and place a block of redstone on it.

Next, place a lever on top of the tallest iron block. Try turning it on and off , so you can see how it works.

Then move to the sides and place 2 sticky pistons in the center, one on each side. If needed, use support blocks and then break them.

Now, go down to the ground and place a chest under the piston that is pushing the slime block.

After that, place 3 hoppers on each side, starting with the chest. I remind you that, to be able to “attach” the hoppers to the trunk, you must also hold down the Shift key, in order to “bypass” the “Use” function.

Next, place 2 side hoppers starting from the central hopper. This on both sides of the structure.

At this point, take the Binary object and place it on top of the side hoppers. This is done on both sides of the structure, leaving out the hoppers that rest on the trunk.

Then place mine carts with hoppers on top of the rails you placed earlier. Also go break the rails underneath the trolleys you just placed (the small block on the screen will be highlighted).

At this point, place a block of sand inside each mine cart. You can help with a support block, in case you can’t do this directly. Then remember to destroy all the support blocks you created for the occasion.

After that, place cacti on top of each sand block.

Next, go to “close” the structure at the top, through glass blocks. Be careful to leave the central block and those just above the cacti (one unit is enough) and the piston (leave free) “open” upwards.

At this point, try to activate the lever: you will see that the cacti will be generated very quickly and directly inside the trunk.

Put the mechanism to “pause”, go down to the ground and place 7 iron blocks starting from the trunk, also creating a block below the last one.

Next, break all 7 upper blocks, leave only the lower one and place a row of hoppers that goes all the way under the chest.

At this point, place a row of furnaces one block away from the hoppers you just placed.

Now, place iron blocks just in front of the furnaces and “complete” the blocks in the center with another row of hoppers.

Next, place 2 chests on the side of the structure you built, starting just below the last iron block.

After that, go to the back of the structure and place a row of hoppers starting from the chest.

Then place another row of hoppers in the center, just behind the furnaces.

Now, place an iron block on the left and build another row of hoppers from it, right above the one you created earlier.

Move, therefore, to the right side and make the structure of 2 hoppers “protrude” . Place 2 chests on top of these, leaving one “protruding”.

Next, place a hopper in front of the “outer” chest and “surround” it, starting 3 rows of iron blocks that are 8 blocks long.

Therefore, create a structure in the shape of “wings” in front of the blocks you have just placed.

At this point, place 2 redstone torches, one on the right and one on the left of the center block. In front of it, instead, place a lever and deactivate it (the flashlights should go out).

Now, get some redstone powder and place it on the side blocks. In the upper right and upper left blocks, instead, place sticky pistons.

Add, therefore, 4 sticky plungers, 2 on each side, one at the bottom and one at the top, which look towards the structure.

Next, place 2 sand blocks in front of the structure, starting from the left.

Once this is done, place an Observer block (facing up) next to the piston, place an iron block on top of it, and place another sticky piston to the right.

At this point, place one 2-block tall bamboo plant in the sand block on the left. The bamboo must be at least 2 blocks high, otherwise the plant will be destroyed by the mechanism.

Now, close the structure on the sides with gods glass blocks.

Square, therefore, a bucket of water starting from the block in front of the bamboo plant, so that the course ends up right inside the hopper.

Now you can also close the structure from above, again using glass blocks. Remember to leave enough space for the pistons to work. You can try to activate the lever to see if everything works.

Once this is done, go back to the front of the structure and place some redstone dust in front of each furnace, also placing a lever on the final block.

Perfect, at this point, you just have to activate all the levers, starting from that of the bamboo, passing through the one at the top and arriving at the last one you put. In this way, you will set the whole mechanism in motion.

If everything has been done correctly, you will see the first furnace activate (fire will appear) and slowly all the others. All you have to do is interact with the furnaces and put the green dye that is produced in your inventory (which you can find directly in the furnace or in the trunk at the bottom). In this way, in Survival mode, you will be awarded the experience resulting from the creation of objects through furnaces. You will see the green experience bar rise at the bottom.

Here: now you have your infinite farm of Minecraft experience at your disposal. I have tested this procedure in an advanced version of the game, namely 1.15.2. I didn’t have any mods active, as I used the standard profile with no changes. You should therefore have no problem getting this mechanism to work.

In case the facility has problems, you have probably made some mistakes with the hoppers. Remember, therefore, to check that the latter are positioned correctly. You just need to interact with it and see where the bamboo/cactus stops, correcting their “addressing” (you can understand this by means of the “foot” at the bottom ).

Methods for gaining experience quickly

How do you say? Does the previous method not convince you or for some reason it does not work as it should in your version of Minecraft? Don’t worry, I’ll explain immediately what other possibilities you have to get experience quickly within the game.

Well, if you don’t want to use any kind of “trick”, you might want to consider taking a look at the item called Enchantment Bottle (also known as Experience Vial ). In fact, the latter, which can be purchased from the priest villagers (usually dressed in purple) at the cost of 1 emerald, can be cast to generate experience. Typically, it “materializes” from 3 to 11 experience points and villagers sell up to 4 units. This means that if you have some emeralds available and don’t know how to use them, you can quickly generate experience this way.

If, on the other hand, you have no desire to wait, I’ll immediately explain some almost instant methods to generate experience. Well, if you have the Java version of Minecraft for PC, all you have to do is enter a game with commands activated, press the T button on your keyboard and type the command / xp add [nickname] 10 levels, giving Enter to confirm. In this way, the experience levels you have chosen will be added to your character.

To give you a concrete example, if you have a character called “Zane” and you want to increase his experience by 10 levels, all you have to do is use the command / xp add Zane 10 levels. Levels will be added instantly and you no longer have to worry about the experience. In fact, you can repeat this process several times and therefore you will no longer need any experience farm.
