Preliminary information

Before getting to the heart of this tutorial and explaining how to upload a PDF to Facebook, it is necessary to make a necessary premise on the upload options available on the famous social network.

You must know, in fact, that on Facebook it is possible to upload videos, share photos and publish links both on your profile and on pages and groups, without limitations relating to the device used. As for the uploading of other files, including PDFs, there are some limitations: it is only allowed to do so on Facebook groups, both public and private, and exclusively from a computer.

The upload can be done by all users registered in the group, as long as the PDF file to be uploaded is less than 100 MB . Furthermore, I point out that it is possible to send a PDF to other users also via private message.

That said, I urge you not to upload PDFs that are copyrighted and/or for which the author has not granted you permission for publication. I would like to clarify that this tutorial was written for illustrative purposes only and I do not take any responsibility for the use you will make of the information contained in it. Is everything clear so far? Well then let’s take action!

How to post a PDF on Facebook

As mentioned in the previous lines, Facebook only allows you to upload PDFs to groups, including those created by other users. However, you will be happy to know that there are alternative solutions that will allow you to publish a PDF on Facebook even on pages you own or in which you hold the role of Administrator or Editor. Find everything explained in detail below.

How to upload a PDF to a Facebook group

To upload a PDF to a Facebook group, connect to the main page of the social network and, if you haven’t already done so, log in to your account. Then enter your details in the Email or telephone number and Password fields and click on the Login button to log in.

Now, select the Groups option (the icon of the three men ) in the menu located at the top and, in the sections Your groups and Groups you manage visible in the sidebar on the left, access the group of your interest. Alternatively, enter the name of the group in question in the Search on Facebook field, at the top left, press the Enter key on the keyboard and, in the search results, press on the name of the group in which you want to publish your PDF.

At this point, in the Discussion section, click on the To what are you thinking [name]? and, in the new screen displayed, access the Other section by pressing the three dots icon located at the bottom right. On the Add content to your post screen, select the File option, click the Choose a file button and select the PDF you want to upload. Once the upload is complete, press the Publish button to publish the PDF, and that’s it.

If you are the owner or administrator of the group, you can also schedule the publication of the uploaded file. If so, select the Post Schedule option (the calendar icon ), enter the posting date and time, and click the Schedule button. To find out more, I leave you to my guide on how to schedule posts on Facebook.

Please note that you can also upload a PDF to a Facebook group by accessing the File section of the same. To do this, select the File item in the menu visible near the name of the group and, in the new open page, choose the Upload file option. Then select the PDF to upload, wait for it to upload and click on the Publish button to complete the operation.

If, on the other hand, you are wondering if it is possible to upload PDF to Facebook from iPhone, I am sorry to tell you that the answer is no. In fact, neither using the app of the famous social network for Android devices (also available on alternative stores, for devices without Google services) and iPhone / iPad nor by connecting to the Facebook site from a browser (not even activating the desktop version of the latter ) you can upload any type of document.

How to upload a PDF to a Facebook page

As I have reiterated to you several times in the previous paragraphs of this guide, it is not allowed to upload a PDF to a Facebook page. That said, there are a few workarounds you can put into practice by sharing the content of a PDF on a page you’ve created or manage.

The first solution you can consider is to upload the PDF to external sites (e.g. cloud storage services, such as Google Drive and Dropbox, or to your personal blog ), copy the link of the file in question and share it on Facebook.

To understand better, let’s take a practical example using Google Drive as a reference. After logging in to the service in question with your Google account, click on the Publish button, select the File Upload option and select the PDF of your interest, to start uploading. If any of the steps are not clear to you, my guide on how to upload files to Google Drive may be useful.

At this point, right-click on the PDF you just uploaded, select the Get link option from the menu that opens and, in the new screen that appears, press the Copy link button. Finally, connected to the Facebook page of your interest, click on the option Create a post, insert the link copied just now in the Write something field and press the Publish button, to share the PDF through its link.

Don’t you like the idea of sharing your PDF via link? In this case, you can transform the PDF into an image through special software, online services or applications for smartphones and tablets. All you have to do is open the PDF in question with one of these tools, choose the format of your interest and save the new file created. For the detailed procedure, I leave you to my guide on how to convert PDF to image.

Once this is done, connected to your Facebook page, select the Photo/video option visible near the item Create a post and select the image (or images) obtained from the conversion of your PDF. Then click on the Publish button and that’s it. More info here.

How to send a PDF on Facebook

If you are wondering if it is possible to send a PDF on Facebook via private message, you will be glad to know that the answer is yes, as long as you proceed from a computer. All you have to do is start a new chat with the person of your interest, select the option to send a file and upload your PDF.

To proceed, then connect to the main Facebook page and, if you have not set automatic access, log in to your account. Once this is done, open Messenger, by pressing the lightning bolt icon located at the top right, and select the chat of your interest. Alternatively, access the profile of the person to contact or the Facebook page you wish to write to and click on the Message button.

In the new window that opens at the bottom right, press the + button, select the Attach a file option (the paper clip icon ) and choose the PDF file from your computer. Finally, click on the paper airplane icon to send the message, and that’s it.
