How to unblock a site on Google Chrome

From PC

Do you use a PC or a Mac and Chrome insists on blocking the site you try to access, as it tells you that it is not safe ? Then know that you can almost certainly get around the obstacle right from the Chrome warning page.

To begin, start the aforementioned browser, visit the “offending” address and wait for the screen to appear indicating that the site is not safe. At this point, click on the Advanced item and then on the item Proceed to [site name] (not secure) . This way the page will load correctly, as if nothing had happened.

Also keep in mind that often the words “Unsafe site” or “The connection to this site is not secure” does not necessarily indicate the presence of viruses and malware on the aforementioned site and, often, it is a problem related to the HTTPS protocol expired or inactive (with consequent use of the HTTP security protocol , devoid of Secure Sockets Layerch which allows encrypted browsing and which Google Chrome reports as unsafe since 2018).

If, however, you just want to browse the site without leaving any personal information such as credit card details, first name, last name and the like there shouldn’t be any major security issues. To put it in a nutshell, a site classified by Google Chrome as unsafe has more chances of being subject to hacker attacks, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s dangerous.

If you no longer want to display the security warning on the aforementioned site because you are sure it is safe, proceed as follows: press the icon of the three vertical dots located at the top right and from the context menu that opens, click on the Settings item . Now, in the new page that you see, in the menu located on the left of the same, press on the item Privacy and security , then click on the item Site settings .

At this point, in the new page you see open, locate the site you want to unblock among those in the list, then press on the arrow pointing down (next to it) and then on the specific address that is blocked by the additional list that appears . Once you have done all this you will see the page relating to the various permissions of the site (such as Position , Camera , Microphone, etc.).

Alternatively, you can use a “shortcut” to get to the settings of the specific site on Google Chrome more quickly: once you are on the website of your interest, click on the padlock icon , from which you can get the most important information relating to security of the site, located next to the URL bar. At this point, from the panel you see open, click on the Site Settings item to be redirected directly to the relevant page.

Now, if you are sure that the site in question does not really present security problems but that they are erroneously reported by Google Chrome, scroll the page opened down to the item Unsafe content , press on the Block item (located to its right) and select the Allow option from the pop-up menu by clicking on it.

Alternatively, you can also press the three vertical dots icon and then follow the path Settings> Privacy and security> Site settings> Other content settings> Unsafe content and, in the new page that you see, press the Add button next to the item Can show unsafe content to authorize the entire website. Then, in the opened panel, add the address of the Internet site you want to allow to show all the contents and finally press the Add button again . This way, if the problem is not of another nature as we will see later , you will still be able to view it without problems.

Google Chrome Extensions

Have you tried the solution indicated in the previous paragraph but still can’t view the site you want to consult? Then, on the computer, an extension to block sites on Chrome may be active .

What you can do then is check for such an extension and go and remove it. To proceed, press on the puzzle icon located between the URL bar and the profile picture of the Google account in Chrome: at this point you will see a box with the names of the extensions installed.

To deactivate one of them, then click on the Manage extensions button and, in the new page opened, locate the one relating to the blocking of sites and click on the Remove button twice in a row. Alternatively, access the extension’s settings (via its icon), check the list of blocked sites in it and remove the one you want to visit, then typing the unlock code , if necessary. Unfortunately I can’t be more specific with my recommendations as each extension works differently.

Despite all your attempts, the site you want to visit is still blocked, perhaps for geographical reasons? Then you can download and use a VPN extension for Google Chrome which can help you get around the problem. Let me explain better: a VPN is a tool that routes the connection in an encrypted tunnel by disguising the communications and changing the country of the IP address used; this allows you to protect privacy (even on public Wi-Fi networks), overcome censorship and regional blocks and be connected from countries other than the one in which you are actually located.

Among the best VPNs available at the moment I point out to you reliable I point out  NordVPN  (which I told you better  here ) and  Surfshark (which I told you about here ), which have many servers, are very cheap and work without problems even in Chrome, not only from PC, but also from smartphones, tablets and other devices. More info here .

Family Link

Family Link is the Google app dedicated to parental control, it extends its operation beyond Android devices(which I will talk about later ) only to Chromebooks with Chrome OS 71 or later versions . It does not allow, at least for the moment, to control devices such as Windows PCsand Macs .

Therefore, if you do not have a Chromebook it is not possible that the blocking is due to this. Otherwise, however, you can only act if you have the access data of the “parent” Google account. If the answer is affirmative, connect to the Google account management page , if necessary enter your email and password and press the Next button .

Once inside the management panel , click on the item People and sharing in the menu on the left of the page and, in the new screen that has opened, click on the item Manage your family group .

Now click on the profile next to Supervised Member to access the content management page that profile can or cannot see. Once this is done , click on Websites on Google Chrome and, in the new page opened, check the box Allow access to all sites . This will remove all parental lock restrictions related to searches on the Google Chrome browser.

To unblock a single site, instead, put the check mark next to the item Try to block sites with explicit content , then click on Manage sites and, in the new page that opens, click on the item Blocked sites and then press on the X in correspondence of the site you no longer want to be blocked. More info here .

From smartphones and tablets

Do you use an Android smartphone or a tablet or an iPhone / iPad ? So much depends on the device on which Google Chrome is installed: on an Android terminal after tapping on the Google Chrome icon and starting the search, once on the site of your interest, you can give your authorization to view the site directly via the report page. Also in this case, therefore, you can press on the Advanced item and then on Proceed to [site name] (not secure) , to view it normally.

However, through the settings of Google Chrome for Android, it is not possible to offer the authorization that eliminates the warning message relating to unsafe sites for a specific site. The only thing you can do, even if it is quite dangerous because the operation disables the protection of all apps and from all types of malicious content, is to disable Google Play Protect , the security service active by default.

If you are still determined to do so, proceed as follows: do you tap on the Play Store , then press on your image of ‘ Google Account at the top right and that opened the new screen select the item Play Protect . At this point, press the Settings icon (the wheel at the top right) and in the new screen opened, move the lever to OFF next to the item Analyze apps with Play Protect and press the item Disable , to conclude and disable the service.

On the iPhone and iPad , however, it is not possible to bypass the reporting of dangerous sites on Google Chrome and not even proceed through the settings of the aforementioned browser. I’m sorry to inform you that, in this case, the options are very few! All you can do, but even then it is a rather dangerous option because no protection is provided anymore, is to disable the Safe Browsing feature of Google Chrome.

To proceed, tap on the browser icon in question, then press the icon of the three horizontal dots and select the Settings item . Then tap on the Google Services item and, in the new screen you see, move the lever next to the Safe Browsing item to OFF . This way your device will no longer be protected from dangerous sites and, in theory, you will no longer be shown warnings.

Google Chrome Extensions

In the mobile versions of Google Chrome for Android smartphones and tablets and for iOS / iPadOS it is unfortunately not possible to install the extensions as is the case in the PC version, since they are not supported either for Android devices or for branded ones. Apple. In addition to this, it is also not possible to make changes to the extensions installed via PC in case of synchronization.

For these reasons, to bypass a blocked website, you need to resort to other solutions such as those listed below . To learn more about mobile extensions, I suggest you consult my guide on how to add extensions to Chrome , where you can find a more detailed explanation of Google Chrome for this type of device.

Family Link

Are you using an Android phone “locked” via Family link? So, as described above for the computer, you must be able to access the app on the smartphone from the “parent” Google account, which is the one that has the ability to administer accounts with parental restrictions.

What you have to do, in this case, is to unblock the site in question using the Google Family Link app available for Android on the Play Store and for iPhone on the App Store .

To do this, use the app on the control device, or download it to your device and log in using the credentials of the “parent” Google account. Once done, through the main screen of the app, tap on the Show item (at the bottom, to the right of the screen) and, in the new screen that opened, press on the Choose settings item .

Now tap on the Google Chrome item and press the word Allow all sites (once selected you will see the check mark appear). This way all account restrictions will be removed and your Android device will be able to browse the Internet freely without limitations. Alternatively, to unblock a single site, click on the Manage sites item under the heading Try to block sites with explicit content , tap on the Blocked item and press the X next to the Internet site you want to unblock.

Other solutions

The reasons why you still can’t access a particular website can be many: it could be, for example, the Family Safety parental control installed by default on Windows PCs or Usage Time in macOS .

To check the activation of these two systems and proceed with the deactivation, you can do this: on a Windows PC, press the Start icon (the Windows flag) and follow the path Settings> Accounts> Family and other users .

Within the opened screen you will see which profiles belong to the family. Once you have identified the profile you need, to unlock it, click on Manage family settings online or remove an account . On the Web page that opened, then, click on the button I have already completed the installation. Log in immediately , then enter the details of the family Organizer account , that is, the one able to change the settings (you will not be able to do this, of course, with the “child” account).

Now you just have to identify the profile subject to the block, press on the three vertical dots and select the Go to overview item . In the new page that appears, click on the Content Filters option and, under the Filter settings item , move the lever to Disable for the item Filter inappropriate websites and searches . This will unblock Google Chrome, as setting this filter only allows use of the restricted Microsoft Edge browser .

On the Mac , on the other hand, always using the administrator account, click on the System Preferences icon located in the Dock or inside the Launchpad, then select the Screen time icon and click on the Content and privacy item in the menu located at left. Then check the box next to Unlimited web content , to eliminate any type of block.

Is the site you want to consult blocked by your school or by your employer ? Then, even in this case, there are many solutions that you can use to bypass the “black list” of sites that the network administrator has decided not to make accessible.

You can use a web proxy or a VPN (or the Chrome extensions I mentioned earlier ). To use these tools and solve problems related to sites blocked for administrative, geographical or numerous other reasons, you can use one of the many online solutions (such as FilterBypass.me ) or proceed by installing a classic computer program (in the case of VPNs) .

Whichever one you prefer, you will find everything explained in my guide dedicated to how to see blocked sites , in which you will read detailed explanations and find numerous solutions both online and downloadable. Furthermore, I recommend that you also take a look at my tutorials on how a VPN works and the best VPNs around, to get a detailed picture of how the latter works.

Is the site you want to unblock blocked by the provider , i.e. your telephone operator? Then you can easily solve the problem by going to the default DNS server settings . Said thus it seems an extremely complicated question but in practice it is not: it is just a matter of going to the Windows Settings or to the Mac System Preferences , locate the Network and Internet / Network item , then press the Advanced / Advanced Network Settings button .

At this point, if you are using a Windows PC , click on the connection you are using (eg Wi-Fi ) to see its details and press on the item View additional properties . In the new screen, next to the item DNS server assignment (Automatic), press the Edit button and, in the new panel you see, set the item Manual , then activate the lever under the wording IPv4 and return to the appropriate text fields ( preferred DNS and DNS alternative ) the DNS addresses you wish to use – such as those of Cloudflare ( 1.1.1.1 ,1.0.0.1 ) and OpenDNS . ( 208.67.222.222 , 208.67.220.220 ) – then click on the Save button to save what you have done.

If you are using a Mac , on the other hand, press the DNS tab then the + icon and type the DNS address you want to use. Once done, to complete the procedure and save, press the OK and Apply buttons . This way you will bypass nationally imposed limits. In case you encounter problems, or want to implement the procedure on some other device, I suggest you read my guide on how to change DNS .
