Preliminary information

Before explaining how to stretch a video for Instagram , I must give you some useful preliminary information on the subject.

In fact, you must know that each section of Instagram has different duration limits for the videos to be posted. For example, the stories can last up to 15 seconds , but if you want to upload a video of longer duration it is possible to do so, since the same social network will automatically divide the video into several stories of 15 seconds each .

As for posts , movies must be a maximum of 1 minute long . The IGTV section allows the publication of horizontal or vertical videos with a maximum duration of 60 minutes . Finally, the Reel section allows the use of videos up to 60 seconds long .

Having made the necessary technical premises, let’s see how to proceed to post videos longer than allowed on Instagram.

How to stretch a video for Instagram in stories

To stretch a video for Instagram by posting it in the stories , all you have to do is use the social network app for Android or iOS , in order to import the video to be published in the stories editor . It will then be the same app to divide the movie into multiple clips of 15 seconds each.

So to get started, launch the Instagram app, log into your account, and swipe from right to left on the home screen to open the story editor.

At this point, tap on the multimedia gallery icon located in the lower left corner and import the movie of your interest, selecting it from the memory of your device. Once this is done, if the video is longer than 15 seconds it will be automatically cropped by Instagram which will divide it into multiple stories of 15 seconds each.

Once this is done, if you are satisfied with the result, press the Next button and finally, press the Share button , to post videos in Instagram stories. if you have any doubts or problems, read, my tutorial on how to create Instagram stories .

How to stretch a video for Instagram in posts

As anticipated, if a video made lasts a maximum of 60 seconds you can publish it in Instagram posts , so that it is visible on your profile .

To do this, access Instagram through the social network app, press the (+) button located in the upper right corner and, in the menu that is shown to you, press the Post item .

Now, import the movie you want to publish from the gallery of your device, press the scum icon located at the top for two consecutive times and then write the accompanying caption for the post. At the end of the customization, press the  icon , to confirm the publication of the video.

If your video is longer than 1 minute, you will first need to trim it with suitable apps and publish it in the form of multiple posts.

For more information about it, read my guide in which I explain how to post on Instagram .

How to stretch a video for Instagram with IGTV

Among the solutions I recommend you use, to lengthen a video for Instagram there is also the one relating to the publication of the video on IGTV , a section of the social network in which the contents can be of a maximum duration of 60 minutes .

Therefore, to get started, start the Instagram app on your device, to access your account , or alternatively, log in to Instagram from the official website or through its application for Windows 10 and later .

In the first case, to publish a video on IGTV from a smartphone , press the (+) button located in the upper right corner.

Once this is done, press the Post button , select the video from your device’s gallery and press the Next button . At this point, if the video lasts more than a minute, put a check mark on the Long video item , in order to set the upload on IGTV .

To act as a PC , instead, go to your Profile section , then click on the IGTV section and click on the Upload button to import the movie.

Once this is done, in both cases, add the title , description and edit the cover of the movie. Finally, hit the Publish to IGTV button .

How to stretch a video for Instagram in the Reels

Another solution you have available to lengthen a video for Instagram is that relating to the publication of the video on Instagram Reel , a section of the social network in which the videos can be accompanied by music and last a maximum of 60 seconds .

Therefore, to get started, start the Instagram app and then, after logging in to your account , tap the (+) button .

At this point, presses on the Reel item , to open this Instagram editor, then repeatedly presses the button 15 located on the left, in order to lengthen the maximum duration of the video up to 60 seconds . If your video is longer than 1 minute, you will first need to trim it with suitable apps and publish it as multiple Reels.

Now, import the movie by choosing from your device memory and press the Add button to import it into the timeline. Then, use the tools dedicated to the creation of Reel on Instagram , choosing a soundtrack for the movie (the musical note icon ) and adding any filters and effects (the sparkle icon ).

When you have finished editing, press the Preview button , then tap the Next item . Now write a caption for the video and, finally, press the Share button , to post the video in the Reel section of Instagram that is visible on your profile .

App to stretch a video for Instagram

As already mentioned above, to post videos longer than allowed on Instagram you need to use third-party apps to cut the videos and make them fit the pre – established time limits of each section of the social network. Here are some examples.

  • inShotAndroid / iOS / iPadOS ): is an app dedicated to video editing, which also allows you to add filters and effects. It’s free , basically, but it applies a watermark to exported videos, which can be removed for free with each use. In addition, it offers the optional purchase of the Pro version (€ 3.99 / month) which allows you to export videos without having to remove the watermark every time and also to get unlimited access to all available filters and effects. I also told you about it in my guide dedicated to apps to create videos with photos and music .
  • Story Cutter for InstagramAndroid ): it is an app that allows you to cut a video, automatically splitting it into 10-second clips It is free , but if you want to choose a different cut for splitting the movies you need to purchase the paid version ( € 3.99 / one-time).
  • iMovieiOS / iPadOS ): This is the video editing app included “standard” on Apple devices. It is an app that makes ease of use its strong point, as it allows you to cut a video quickly and immediately. You can find more information on its use in my tutorial on how to use iMovie .
