How to recover forgotten Hotmail password
You have several possibilities to recover your Hotmail account password , but in the meantime let’s see the simplest method to be able to find it. If you have consented to saving the credentials entered while browsing the web, your Hotmail account password is most likely located in the browser’s encrypted database. The latter is therefore nothing more than a password manager that keeps your web service passwords.
That said, what you have to do in general is to open the web browser on your PC (or smartphone / tablet) and access the section relating to the saved credentials to find out the password associated with your Hotmail account. In this regard, my advice is to carefully read the instructions I gave you in my article on how to view saved passwords, to find out how to do this simple operation on your device.
If this method does not bring you any results because you have never consented to saving the Hotmail login credentials on the browser, you must therefore proceed with resetting the password. The procedure I am about to describe is also valid if you want to recover Hotmail passwords via mobile phone.
To perform this operation, then, connected to the official web page of Microsoft mail services and press the Login button at the top. Once this is done, in the appropriate text field that is shown to you, type your e-mail address or the telephone number or Skype ID associated with your Microsoft account.
Now, press the Next button to display the password entry screen. Since you don’t remember it, click on Forgot password? that you find below and select the method of verification of your identity (and therefore of recovery) preset on your Microsoft account.
Depending on the means in your possession and the information that you have previously associated with your Hotmail account, you must choose a method for verifying your identity: you can request to receive a verification code at the alternative email address or secondary ( Send email to [email address] ), via text message to your phone ( SMS to [phone number] ) or you can use an authentication app ( Use my authentication app ).
You will only be presented with one of the above methods, which you have set up on your Microsoft account. In case you are presented with the option to receive an email for identity verification, you must enter the full email address of your sub-account associated with the Microsoft account in the box below.
If, on the other hand, you are shown the option to receive an SMS, you must enter the last 4 digits of the phone number associated with your Microsoft account in the appropriate box. In both cases listed above, after typing what is requested from the appropriate text box, press the Get code button to receive an e-mail or SMS (depending on the method chosen) with the verification code.
If you want to use the Hotmail password recovery app , you need to rely on Microsoft Authenticator ( Play Store / alternative stores and iOS / iPadOS ). However, this app must be previously configured in your Microsoft account, which I told you about in detail in my guide on how to activate 2FA. Alternatively, you can also use other apps for 2FA, such as Google Authenticator, which I told you about in the tutorial I just linked to.
If the option indicated on the screen does not suit you for any of your reasons (for example you do not have access to the email or the device where you can receive a verification SMS), press on the items Use a different verification option and then Show more verification methods , to see a list of all identity verification settings set up on your Microsoft account.
After retrieving the identity verification code , type it in the appropriate text box on the screen and press the Next button to go to the next screen for changing the Microsoft account password. What you have to do, therefore, is to type the new password (in both text boxes) that you want to associate with your Hotmail address (set a secure password, please). Finally, press the confirm button at the bottom to validate the password change.
I must warn you that unfortunately it is not possible in any way to recover the Hotmail password with secret question . Therefore, carefully follow the procedures I described above to be able to locate or reset your Microsoft account password.
If none of identity verification methods I’ve shown you in the preceding paragraphs does not fit, because maybe you no longer have any access to services or devices configured, press on the item I have no such information and, if you have a code recovery , enter it in the appropriate text field that is shown on the screen, then pressing the Use recovery code button located at the bottom, so you can reset the password.
If you don’t have any of this information, then I suggest you continue reading by following the tips that I will explain to you in the next chapter.
How to recover stolen Hotmail password
If your account has been compromised and you can no longer log in, you can simply follow the instructions I gave you in the previous chapter so that you can verify your identity and reset your Hotmail account password. I remind you that you can make up to two attempts a day.
If, unfortunately, you no longer have access to the identity verification methods you set up on your Microsoft account, the situation becomes very complex to manage.
Following the instructions I gave you in the previous chapter, when you reach the recovery code entry screen, press the No key to reach the Hotmail password recovery form .
Through this form, after entering all the requested information, you will be contacted by email by the Microsoft support team. If the identity verification is successful, you will receive a link in the email address you provided in the form to reset your Hotmail account password.
How to change Hotmail password
By carrying out the procedure indicated in the previous chapter, the access key with which to log into your Microsoft account will obviously be changed. So, if after gaining access to your account, you want to change your password again, you can do it by following the procedures that I indicate in the following lines.
Connect to the official website that allows you to manage Microsoft accounts, by clicking here and pressing the Login button . Then log in with your Hotmail account credentials using the appropriate form on the screen (you may be asked to verify your identity).
On the next screen, click on the Security menu item that you can see at the top, then click on the Change Personal Password button . Once this is done, all you have to do is change the access key: then use the Current password , New password and Confirm password fields and click on the Save button to confirm the changes.
For the future, in order to avoid wasting precious time trying to recover the password of your Hotmail account, I suggest you use one of the appropriate resources that I indicated in my tutorial dedicated to password programs (or you could rely on password managers browsers, even if they are less advisable). Using these tools you can manage and keep your password without problems, to access your Hotmail account but not only. If I were you I would give them at least a look!
