The SPID is, in fact, a sort of digital identity that can be requested by citizens and companies and which identifies them in a unique way. To obtain a SPID identity you must contact one of the identity providers, or certification bodies, accredited by the Italian government, which at the moment are the following: Aruba, InfoCert, Intesa, Lepida, Namirial, Poste Italiane, Sielte, Spiditalia / Register and TIM.

The SPID identity can guarantee three levels of security, which vary according to the type of access and use: level 1 allows you to access the services by authenticating with a combination of username and password and is the least recommended mode in terms of safety, as it does not involve the use of factors attributable to the person or company that owns SPID.

The level 2 SPID increases the level of security by requesting, after entering the user name and password, also a single-use code generated via a dedicated app/device, or sent via SMS. This is the authentication method most used by online services with SPID support, dedicated to private citizens.

The simplest and fastest authentication method involves the use of the new generation Electronic Identity Card ( CIE 3.0 ) and its PIN, together with a smartphone or tablet equipped with an NFC chip: to verify, you must first download the official app of the certification body chosen, start it and, when requested, bring the CIE close to the device and enter its PIN. The recognition is mostly instant, almost always free and allows you to immediately complete the creation of the SPID identity, which should be activated within a few minutes.

In addition to the CIE 3.0 + NFC chip system, there are other equally effective (but not always immediate) verification methods: below you will list the most commonly used ones.

• TS-CNSor CIE with smart card reader for PC: some certifying bodies allow you to complete the SPID request by inserting/placing your health card with the functions of a national service card, or the electronic identity card, to a smart card connected and installed on the computer; to complete everything, you must then provide the access PIN of the document. The service is free.
• Video with document + OTP: if you do not have electronic documents or IT tools to use them, you can opt for recording a video, in which your face and the required documents are visible. As an additional security measure, it is also necessary to read a disposable code received via SMS and, in some cases, to issue a symbolic transfer from an Italian account in one’s own name, or jointly. The procedure is free.
• Digital signature / qualified electronic signature: holders of digital signature kits can use it to verify their identity with numerous certification bodies. The service is free.
• Assisted recognition via webcam: if necessary, you can request the intervention of a “human” operator, who will carry out a guided recognition of the person, via online videoconference. The service is almost always paid.

The release of the SPID credentials can take place within a few minutes, hours or days from the conclusion of the identity verification, depending on the system chosen; recognition methods such as CIE + NFC smartphone/tablet and digital signature are mostly instantaneous, but the timing may still vary according to the security policies of the certifying body.

How to have the SPID offline

Don’t have the right tools to complete the activation of the online SPID identity? In this case, I recommend that you choose an identity provider which, among the supported identity verification systems, provides for “face to face” recognition in a physical location.

Generally, you must go to a dedicated office, or an authorized commercial activity (e.g. a tobacconist), bringing with you the digital print of the request launched online, together with your health card and the identity document issued during the signing up.

Once you have reached the appropriate location, it is sufficient to communicate your need to the person in charge of the work, who will take care of acquiring the necessary documentation and carrying out the recognition of the applicant.

How to get the SPID: Poste

In some cases, such as for example with Poste Italiane, the request for the SPID identity can also be made in completely offline mode, without starting the practice via the Internet: in this case, bringing with you the necessary documents (health card and card identity/driving license/passport), you must go to any post office in Italy and submit your request to the clerk at the counter for the public.

During registration, the personnel in charge will take care to create a SPID-enabled Poste ID account, associated with a valid email address and a certified mobile number.

The certification body in question also allows the procedure to be divided into two distinct steps, by initiating the SPID identity request via the Web and completing the verification of personal identity at the post office.

Have you finally requested and obtained a SPID identity and now would you like to use it to access the INPS online services? Nothing simpler. In this regard, I anticipate right away that it is necessary to have a SPID identity with level 2 security, for access to be successful.
