How to fix “DirectX encountered an unrecoverable error” on Windows?

Some Call of Duty fanatics often encounter DirectX error when launching COD. In this case, the game does not start and displays the message “DіrеctX encountered an unrecoverable error”. Such a nuisance happens not only during the inclusion of COD, but also when launching other game applications. The article below provides ways to resolve this error.

1. Checking system requirements

Most recent games require DirectX software version 11 or 12. If you have other versions installed, it will be problematic to launch newer toys. To check the version of DirectX for the game, do the following:

  • Open the game page on Steam. Find DirectX requirements.
  • Press the key combination Win + R. In the dialog box that opens, enter “dxdiag”. Click OK.
  • A window will appear with information on the compliance of your hardware with the requirements of the game, as well as the installed version of DirectX.

We would like to warn you that DX 12 is provided only for Windows 10, and DX 11 – for OS starting from the “seven”. When updating the OS to the latest version, the directory is installed on all systems automatically.

2. Reinstall the video card driver

  • Open the device manager (Win + R), enter devmgmt.msc in the text box.
  • We find the video adapter.
  • We write down the manufacturer and model of the video card.
  • We go to the manufacturer’s website, looking for the Drivers and Support option.
  • You will see two options for installing the software:
  1. manual;
  2. auto;
  • We select the installation manually, fill in the fields:
  1. product type (we need a graphics driver);
  2. type of graphics adapter;
  3. the series of your video card;
  4. Windows version.
  • Click on Display Results.
  • In the window that appears, click the “Supported Products” tab, look for your model.

  • In the PCM device manager, click on the video adapter, select Properties -> Driver tab -> Remove device from the drop-down list. We confirm.
  • We find the installer of the downloaded software for the video card and launch it, following the instructions of the installation wizard. At the end, restart the PC.
