Archiving WhatsApp chats: what is it for?

Before getting to the heart of this tutorial and explaining how to archive WhatsApp chats , let me explain what this feature available in the famous messaging application is for.

If, therefore, you are wondering “what is the purpose of archiving WhatsApp chats?” , you should know that this option allows you to hide an individual or group chat from the Chat section of WhatsApp, without necessarily deleting it.

Archived chats remain archived indefinitely by default and can be manually restored at any time. Keep in mind that all messages will still be delivered but you will not receive any notification, just like when you decide to silence WhatsApp .

Having said that, I would like to underline that by accessing the WhatsApp settings, it is possible to disable the latter option: by doing so, not only will you receive a notification for each new message sent in an archived chat but the conversation in question will be automatically restored and moved to the Chat section of WhatsApp every time a new message is received. Having clarified this, let’s see how to proceed.

How to archive WhatsApp chats on Android

The procedure for archiving WhatsApp chats on Android is quick and easy. All you have to do is select the chat of your interest and press on the option to archive it.

To proceed, take your device, start WhatsApp and access the Chat section . Now, make a long tap on the conversation you want to archive and press the down arrow icon , located in the top menu.

Please note that you can also archive multiple conversations at the same time. After selecting the first chat you want to archive, put the check mark next to all the other conversations of your interest and tap the down arrow icon . If everything went well, you will see the message [number] archived chats on the screen .

If, on the other hand, you want to archive all the chats, press the three dots icon, at the top right, and select the Settings option from the opened menu. Now, tap on the Chat and Chat History items, press the Archive all chats option and tap the OK button .

To see the chats archived on WhatsApp , access the Chat section again and tap on the Archived option (appears after archiving at least one conversation).

In this screen, by making a long tap on the conversations of your interest and pressing the arrow icon pointing upwards , you can restore the previously archived chats. For the detailed procedure, you can take a look at my guide on how to remove an archived chat on WhatsApp.

How to archive WhatsApp chats on iPhone

To archive WhatsApp chats on iPhone , start the famous messaging application and press on the Chat option located in the bottom menu.

Now, swipe from right to left on the conversation you want to archive and select the Archive pop-up option. Alternatively, make a long tap on the chat of your interest and press on the Archive item from the opened menu.

To archive multiple chats at the same time, instead, tap on the Edit option , at the top left, put the check mark next to all the chats to be archived and press on the Archive item , at the bottom left.

Furthermore, I point out that by accessing the WhatsApp settings, you can also archive all chats. To do this, click on the Settings option located in the bottom menu, select the Chat item and, in the new screen displayed, tap on the Archive all chats option .

To view the conversations you have archived, access the Chat section again and press on the Archived item (if you do not see it, scroll down the screen and it should appear). In the Archived screen , you can restore a single chat either by swiping it from right to left on it and selecting the Extract option or by making a long tap on the conversation of your interest and pressing on the Extract item from the opened menu.

Alternatively, you can also press on the Edit option , at the top right, select the Select chat option and put the check mark next to all the chats to restore. Then press on the item Extract from the archive , to restore the conversations in question in the Chat section of WhatsApp.

How to archive WhatsApp chats on PC

If your intention is to archive WhatsApp chats on a PC , you must know that the procedure is identical both using the service client for Windows and macOS and proceeding from WhatsApp Web , the browser version of the popular instant messaging service.

In both cases, in the list of available conversations, pause with the mouse pointer on the chat of your interest, press the down arrow icon and click on the Archive chat option from the opened menu.

Unlike what I have previously indicated for Android and iPhone devices, from a computer it is not possible to archive multiple chats at the same time or to archive all available conversations.

In case of second thoughts, you can extract a chat from the archive by clicking on the Archived item , at the top left, pressing the down arrow icon relating to the conversation of your interest and selecting the option Extract chat from the archive from the menu opened.

How to archive WhatsApp chats forever

As I mentioned in the opening lines of this guide, archived chats by default remain archived indefinitely and can be manually restored at any time.

However, if you have archived a chat and it automatically restores itself for each new message received, you will need to turn on the option to archive WhatsApp chats forever .

To proceed, start the WhatsApp app and, if you have an Android device, access the Chat section . Then press the three dots icon , at the top right, select the Settings option from the opened menu and, in the Archived Chats section , move the lever relating to the item Keep archived chats from OFF to ON.

Alternatively, if you have already archived at least one conversation, press on the Archived item , tap on the three dots icon, at the top right, and select the Archive settings option . In the new screen that appears, move the lever relating to the item Keep archived chats from OFF to ON and that’s it.

If, on the other hand, you have an iPhone , press on the Settings item located in the bottom menu, select the Chat option and move the lever next to the item Keep archived chats from OFF to ON.

In the same way you can also proceed by accessing the Chat section of WhatsApp and tapping on the Archived item . Press, then, on the Edit option , at the top right, select the Edit archive settings item from the opened menu and, in the Chat screen , move the lever relating to the Keep archived chats option from OFF to ON.

If you prefer to proceed from a computer , I’m sorry to tell you that the option to keep chats archived even in case of new messages is not available. However, if you have activated this option on your smartphone or tablet, the conversations will remain archived even using WhatsApp from a computer.
