Advertise on Google for free

Let’s start this guide by seeing how to advertise on Google for free by adopting editorial strategies aimed at improving the positioning of your site, so as to make it appear at the top of the Google SERP, or the page containing the search results. To succeed in such an enterprise there is no other way, if not to use effectively some SEO  techniques  ( Search Engine Optimization, in Italian “optimization for the search engine”).

Taking into account the fact that Google’s algorithm takes into account more than 200 factors before returning search results, it is almost impossible to know for sure what are all the tricks necessary to get the contents of your site to rank at the top of the SERP. However, there are some precautions that can contribute in a more or less significant way to improve the positioning of your site on the most used search engine on the planet.

The first one I want to bring to your attention has to do with making quality content. Google’s main goal is to return search results to the user that are as useful and relevant as possible to the keywords they are looking for. By creating quality content, which comprehensively answers the question the user wants to find an answer to, Google is more likely to “reward” it by showing it among the top search results (which in the vast majority of cases are also those that the user reads first).

Some people, in creating their own content, try to “deceive” Google by adopting incorrect practices, such as the now well-known keyword stuffing which, explained in simple terms, consists in repeating the main keyword quite frequently, in order to increase the probability of being taken into consideration by Google bots  (algorithms that analyze web pages on behalf of the search engine). By now the techniques related to keyword stuffing, in addition to being unproductive, can even negatively affect the optimization of a site. Instead of rewarding content in which a keyword is repeated in an excessive, mechanical and unnatural way, in fact, Google penalizes them (as it should be!).

The keywords are important but should be used sparingly, putting them in the title of the page or post and repeated at most a couple of time, naturally, in the body text. As for sentence structure, try to write as simply as possible, as if you were speaking to a “real” person who wants to know more about a certain topic.

As for the choice of topics to be treated, this must be done taking into account what actually interests your potential readers. To find out what are the most interesting topics at a given moment, you can use  Google Trends, a tool that allows you to identify the hottest topics of the moment in real time (as I have already explained to you in a dedicated post ) and KeywordTool, which allows you to identify “secondary” keywords that are related to the main keyword (this offers excellent editorial suggestions from which you can take inspiration to organize, for example, the chapters of your articles). Both services are, of course, free.

If you want a more complete study on the techniques to use to improve the positioning of your site on Google (and not only), you can think of buying ” Il Metodo Aranzulla ” (published by Mondadori Electa ), a book where I speak more specifically about tools and techniques that can improve the visibility of a website.

Advertise on Google with Ads
As I told you in the introduction of the article, another way to advertise on Google is to use the  Ads service, which allows you to insert sponsored search results in the SERP of the search engine, making them appear above the organic search results (i.e. those not paid). Among the most interesting aspects of Ads, there is the possibility of sponsoring your own content without paying monthly or annual subscriptions: the payment takes place only when the ad is actually clicked by a user.

To use Google Ads, connected to the home page of the service, press the Start now button under the heading  Grow your business with Google Ads and log in to your Google account (if you have not already done so). On the page that opens, then, define the goal you want to achieve by selecting one of the options from those proposed ( Receive more callsIncrease sales or registrations on the website or Receive more visits to your physical location ) and click on the Next button to go to the next step.

Subsequently, describe your activity by filling in the form that appeared on the screen with the requested information (eg Name of the commercial activity and Website of the activity ), click again on the Next button and then define the range of action of the campaign by clicking on the button  Set a radius around your business to delimit a relatively large geographical area (even entire countries) or click on the Set specific areas button to delimit smaller geographical areas (even single cities). Click the Next button once again to continue.

At this point, you have to choose the keyword theme that best suits your business: click on the (x) in correspondence with the theme automatically chosen by Google and then click on the Add keyword theme button to “manually” choose the theme of keywords you intend to set: type a keyword that is in line with your campaign and then select one of the categories from those proposed. Click the Next button again to continue.

Next, write your ad, fill in the Heading 1Heading 2Heading 3Description 1 and Description 2  text fields with all the information you intend to show in the ad. After seeing a preview on the right of the page, click the Next button.

After doing this, set your budget by selecting one of the available options, and then click the Next button. Then review the characteristics of your campaign and, if necessary,  change some settings using the appropriate function that allows you to do this. Then, click the Next button and, on the new page that opens, provide the billing and payment information for the listing.

Then fill in the data located in the Customer Information section (e.g. type of account,  namesurnameaddresstelephone number, etc.), complete the information located in the Payment method section (e.g. card numbername of the ownerCVC, etc.), press the Send button and follow any instructions that appear on the screen to complete the operation.

Mission accomplished! When a user searches for a topic on Google using the keywords you have related to the ad, they will see your ad and, if they click on it, you will pay the previously set budget. If you want more information on how Google Ads works, take a look at the guide I just linked to.
