How is SPID done
You’ve always heard of SPID, but you thought it would never help you and you always let it be because you believed it was just a waste of time. Now, however, you have discovered that it is necessary to access many services of the Public Administration (and not only), and therefore you want to understand how SPID is done. If that’s the case, know that you’ve come to the right place, because in this guide you can discover all the steps necessary to create your digital identity.
You can do this in various ways, many of which at no cost and which do not require you to go to offices or other places in person. Yes, you read that right! You may be able to obtain the SPID from the comfort of your home and in a very short time; all without spending a cent and having the ability to immediately access all supported services.
You just have to read this guide that I have prepared for you, where the information you will find will allow you to avoid making any kind of mistakes and avoid the most common and annoying problems when requesting the SPID. Enjoy the reading!

Preliminary information
Allow me to briefly explain what SPID is and what it is for. Well, the SPID is a Public System of Digital Identity with which to access the services of the Public Administration (and not only) in a safe and rather fast way; from 1 October 2020, for example, INPS allows access to its services only via SPID (with the exception of some categories of users, such as minors, who can still use the old PIN). And what about the 18app Culture Bonus? Also in this case the SPID is required during registration.
The SPID has three security levels that provide for a different access method to the various supported services. I’ll explain immediately what I mean: the level 1 SPID (the least secure and, therefore, not recommended) allows you to log in by entering only a username and password; the level 2 SPID (more widespread and reasonably secure) provides access with username, password and with an OTP code often generated through the app of the chosen Identity Provider, while the level 3 SPID allows access with smart card and password, so it has a stronger security system. Remember that all three levels are accessible and that to activate the next you must have activated the previous one.
You are surely wondering who is providing the username, passwords and everything you need to create the SPID: these are the so-called Identity Providers I told you about earlier, that is, companies that are officially recognized by the authorities and, for free. or for a fee, they certify the digital identity of the people who register. I’ll tell you more about this and much more later.
How to do the SPID online
It is not difficult to understand how SPID is done online because, whatever procedure you have to choose and any type of authentication you want to do, you will be guided step by step.
I was saying about Identity Providers: it is through these companies that the digital identity is created, and they are the same ones that provide various procedures to ensure that it is really you who request the activation of the service. At the moment, the enabled providers are: Aruba, InfoCert, Intesa, Lepida, Namirial, Poste Italiane, Sielte, Register and TIM, as you can clearly see on the government website dedicated to SPID, where a lot of other information is associated with each provider (for example, the type of recognition they offer, the geographic area covered, etc.).
Let’s say that you want to know how to SPID with Aruba, or that you want to look for information on how to do SPID with Lepida, which are two of the many providers available: you will have to go to the official website of the chosen provider and follow the procedure that most convinces you after having consulted the offers available.
There are two types of recognition procedures: the first is remotely, the second is in person. In the first case, you can complete the entire procedure without leaving home and therefore without going to the public office of the chosen provider.
The procedure is almost always free for private customers, but some more advanced recognition services, for example, the one with the recognition via webcam or the one in person that requires the presence of a human operator, are subject to a fee. The most convenient and immediate remote recognition methods, such as those with Electronic Identity Card (CIE), National Service Card (CNS) or digital signature are free. Even if the service does not involve any expense for private customers, in some cases, when SPID 3 is activated, the renewal is subject to a fee. For companies, the service is not free and involves an average outlay of about 30 euros per year.
What documents are needed for the procedure? Nothing that you do not already have: you should keep a document with you including your identity card, driving license, passport or health card, or your residence permit if you do not have Italian citizenship. Also keep your mobile number and e-mail address handy because to complete the registration the provider must verify your contacts. For some procedures, you need a webcam, therefore, in case you intend to be recognized in this way, you must have with you a smartphone/tablet with a working camera or a PC that is equipped with one. In the case of activation with CIE, you will also need to have the PIN of the card at hand.
When it is not possible to identify yourself with CIE or other quick methods, you can verify your identity remotely by recording a video showing an identity document and the social security number, reading a temporary code that you receive from the provider and then performing a transfer for a negligible amount, specifying in the reason for payment a code received from the certifying body, using an Italian account in the name of the person requesting the SPID.
I will briefly explain how SPID is created with Sielte to give you a concrete example; the procedure is almost the same with all the other providers, so it will certainly come in handy.
First of all, connect to the official Sielte ID website and click on the Register button; indicate if you are a citizen or freelancer or a company. At this point, you will have to choose the recognition procedure I have told you about so far. My advice is to use the recognition mode with CIE and NFC because it is faster than the others, although the latter are not who knows how complex. Click on Choose in the section CIE 3.0 Electronic Identity Card and start the procedure.
Now check all the items for the consent to the processing of personal data and for the contractual documentation, until you have to verify the contacts; follow the instructions until you are asked to enter your email address. Then press Send, wait for the message with the verification code to be received, copy it and click the Verify button. The same procedure must be repeated for the telephone number, even if in this case the code is sent via SMS.
Now all you have to do is fill in all the forms you see on the screen and authenticate according to the method that you think best suits your needs; I recommended CIE and NFC but no one forbids you to opt for other methods of recognition. In case you have followed my advice, you just have to download the IDENTIFICA app for Android (also available on HUAWEI AppGallery ) or iOS, and log in with the credentials that were sent to you via email. You will have to follow a few other directions to start at the end of the procedure.
Follow these instructions, enter the CIE PIN and start identification; a request will appear, after which you must bring your Electronic Identity Card close to the NFC reader, making sure to keep it in the same position for some time. Verification is complete and the SPID has been created! Easy, right?
Be careful, though: this was only level 1, so I strongly recommend that you request level 2 , which can be activated by continuing the procedure with very few steps. All you have to do is click on Continue and follow the instructions on the screen. At this point, by downloading the MySielte ID app for Android (which you can also find on the HUAWEI AppGallery and iOS / iPadOS ) you can authenticate yourself in all the services that require the SPID.
To make the procedure quick, connect to the INPS website, click on the Enter MyInps button, select the SPID tab, then the Enter with SPID option and, finally, your Identity Provider, i.e. Sielte in this case. Use the app to authorize access to the service and you will have finished everything permanently.
How to SPID with a mobile phone
How? Would you like to know how to SPID with a mobile phone and are you afraid that it is much more complicated than the procedure via PC? You are very wrong because it changes very little.
The information I gave you before and the practical procedure I showed you do not change at all: what you do with your PC can also be done easily with your smartphone or tablet.
If you remember correctly, I also told you to keep your mobile number at hand: this is because the smartphone may be necessary to generate the OTP codes of the second security level. For the rest, I repeat: there is no difference.
How to do the SPID at the post office
If you are wondering how to do the SPID at the post office because you have already activated some services and you have never had problems, know that the procedure is almost the same as the one I have described in detail when talking about Sielte.
On the official website of the Post Office, precisely on the page dedicated to PosteID, you have to click on the REGISTER NOW button to start the procedure. At this point, choose the recognition mode among the many proposals (as always, divided between in-person and remote recognition) and click on the CONTINUE button on the right. I remind you that Poste Italiane customers who have opened a Bancoposta account or are in possession of a Bancoposta reader can also use one of these systems to identify themselves quickly.
The information to be entered, the conditions to be accepted and the documents to be viewed are the same; read carefully what they ask you, fill in the fields and continue until you are asked to verify your contacts. How to do the INPS SPID
Have you heard someone talk about it and would like to know how the INPS SPID is done. Well, either you were distracted or the speaker was not yet well informed, since the INPS does not issue the SPID.
Yes, you read that right: not being an Identity Provider, in fact, INPS is not authorized to issue the SPID and cannot be contacted for this type of service. And even if you were to be able to talk to some operator, they wouldn’t be able to help you.
But how? On the INPS website you saw that the SPID is required! You are not wrong, but it is quite the opposite: simply, if you have a SPID you can access all the INPS services, just as you can access any service of any other body that requires the possession of a digital identity. Read more here.
