How the wheels has been reinvented by German designers

Dive into the world of automotive innovation and explore how German designers have reinvented the wheels. In this article there is a closer look at the cutting edge developments and design philosophies that have reshaped wheels concept. From aerodynamics to advanced materials understand the fascinating ways in which German designers are pushing boundaries and creating the foundation of vehicle performance and esthetics.

The phrase “reinvent the wheel” is synonymous with meaningless and unnecessary work, but German automotive component manufacturer Continental doesn’t think so!

It would seem, well, why do you need to invent a wheel – a part that has been known to everyone for a long time, works perfectly and fully meets its tasks? Because there is no limit to perfection! And the prototype of an unusual wheel from Continental called the New Wheel Concept, presented in 2017, is a great example of how even the most sophisticated design can be improved. The “new wheel” is specially designed for electric vehicles.

Its main feature is a braking system integrated directly into the wheel. The New Wheel Concept consists of a rim, carrier sprocket, brake disc, caliper and hub. The annular brake disc is not attached to the wheel hub, but to the disc, while the caliper is located not on the outer, but on the inner radius of the brake disc. The hub is attached to the carrier star of the “New Wheel”.

The extraordinary design, which combines the wheel and brake discs, allows, as the developers assure, to seriously reduce the weight of the wheel. All components of the New Wheel Concept are made of aluminum and are corrosion-free, and the reduced weight of the wheels will provide a reduction in unsprung masses, which affect the ride, handling and dynamics of the electric vehicle. Thus, the electric car will spend less energy for acceleration.

And because electric vehicles use recuperation for braking, the load on the braking system is much lower than in cars with combustion engines. This means that the aluminum disc of the New Wheel Concept will be able to work out the entire service life of the electric car – you will only need to change the brake pads from time to time. It remains to wait until one of the manufacturers is interested in the “New wheel”.

FAQ’s

Has the wheel ever been reinvented?

The modern invention of wheel is considered as reinvention of age old invention. Many different wheels feature enhancements on existing wheels that are regularly marketed and developed.

What is the future technology of wheels?

3D printing and customization is  the future of wheels and their tires are much about personal expression. Advancements in 3D printing technology aloud drivers to customise design and print wheels that reflect the unique driving needs and style.

How do we recreate the wheel?

The idea to recreate wheel means expending resources on previously solved problem is a waste of effort. This idiom can be used as an admonishment against wasting effort and time.
