Caps Lock indicator not working in Windows 10, 8.1, 7

The lack of an indicator is not a major issue, but many users like to have a visual showing whether Caps Lock is activated or not. Several years ago, computer manufacturers began experimenting with removing LEDs from laptops. Buyers are now reporting an issue with the indicator not working on devices.

This article describes how to solve the following problems:

  • Third-party software for displaying Kaps on the screen.
  • Caps in Asus laptops.
  • Problem on Lenovo and Acer devices.
  • There is a problem with the wireless keyboards.
  • Tray icon.

Change access settings

  • Click the Start button.
  • Go to “Settings -> Ease of Access”.
  • Select Keyboard from the left navigation pane.
  • On the right, turn on Hear Tone.

Now, every time you activate Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scroll Lock, your computer plays a notification sound, and another when you disable these functions by pressing the keys again.

Enable indicator using TrayStatus

TrayStatus is a small application developed by BinaryFortress that puts indicator icons directly into the taskbar. The app is very lightweight, takes up less than 4MB of space from your system drive, without increasing Windows boot time if you enable it at startup. Download it from the official site.

Use the Keyboard Indicator

Keyboard Indicator is a small application similar to TrayStatus. It was originally developed for Windows XP, Vista and 7, but works great on Windows 8.1 and 10. The program offers many customization options, from font size and color to animation position and duration, and allows you to customize the displayed text.

Remove problematic PC updates

If you have a recent problem, do the following:

  • Win Key + I.
  • When the Settings app opens, go to the Update & Security section.
  • Now click on “View History”.
  • Now find the last action and double click to delete it.

Check the keyboard is working

The best way is to enter BIOS. Alternatively, connect the keyboard to another PC and check if it works.

Turn on a visual pointer

  • Open the Settings app and go to the access section.
  • Select “Keyboard” from the menu on the left and then enable the “Toggle Keys” option.
  • Go to the Other Options section and select an option for visual notifications and sound.

After that, your active window or screen will flash whenever you press Caps Lock. This effect doesn’t look visually appealing, but at least you’ll get both audio and video notification.

Reinstall Lenovo OSD

If you are using a different brand of laptop, be sure to check similar software and reinstall it. The problem with this laptop is in the Lenovo On Screen Display application. You will have to reinstall it for stable operation. We hope that one of the described methods helped you fix the problem. If this does not happen, contact technical support.
