Android 13 will support two carriers via one eSIM

The new feature developed by Google should debut in branded Pixel smartphones, and later it is possible to implement this technology on other devices and operating systems.

According to iXBT.com , the Android 13 operating system will be equipped with Google MEP (Multiple Enabled Profiles) technology, with which it will be possible to set up the work of two mobile operators at once on one eSIM.

eSIM (Embedded SIM) is an alternative to physical SIM cards, a small chip that is immediately built into a smartphone. Now there are few devices that only support eSIM, usually manufacturers create a SIM + eSIM variant, i.e. leave a slot for the usual plastic.

As stated in the Android Esper blog , one of the reasons why eSIM is not so widespread is the difficulty in implementing simultaneous support for two SIM cards on one smartphone. Google’s development simplifies this process, and users will be able to have several profiles with different operators at the same time.

In addition, the new technology will allow in the future to move away from physical slots for SIM cards, and this will free up space for increasing batteries or installing microSD. Google is expected to reveal more about the new technology at the May I/O 2022 conference.
