Have you been browsing the Play Store for a few minutes but can’t find a good game that isn’t paid for? Really weird. Try to return to the Google Play home page, press the “Games” button and access the menu located at the top left to select the category of video games you prefer (eg Arcade, Action, Cards, etc.). This way you should find quite a few free titles among the most popular ones of the moment.

Nothing yet? So let’s do one thing: download free games for Android that I’m about to recommend. This is a selection of video games, belonging to various genres, which will help you spend a few hours of leisure in a totally free way. Almost.

I put that “almost” because many of the titles distributed for free on the Play Store are actually free-to-play or freemium. That is, they include extra content that can be unlocked by continuing with the game or by paying with real money (via the credit card associated with the Google account). If you want dispassionate advice, always try to take the first route: it is good for your wallet and I assure you that it is even more stimulating from a purely playful point of view. After all, what’s the fun of beating opponents or getting a high score just because you bought an upgrade by shelling out real money ?!

• Jetpack Joyride- one of those games that should be installed on every mobile. It is a hilarious endless title in which you have to escape from the laboratory of an evil scientist using a jetpack. The aim is to collect as many coins and power-ups as possible while avoiding obstacles.
• The Tapping Dead- one of the most original platformers on the Play Store. Featuring 8-bit style graphics, it gives us the only mission to prevent our character from ending up in the other world by stopping his run with his finger. We must therefore avoid that it ends up being fed to zombies (or other monsters) and runs into obstacles of various kinds.
• Snow Bros- remake of the 90’s game of the same name. The goal is to help Nick and Tom, two men who have the ability to trap enemies inside snowballs, to find their girlfriends.
• Lep’s World- excellent platformer for Android that can be easily described as a “clone” of Super Mario with an elf as the protagonist instead of the famous Nintendo plumber.
• Megatroid- a space platformer with semi-3D graphics in which levels are generated randomly ensuring an ever-increasing degree of playability.
• Banana Kong- platform with 2D cartoon graphics in which you have to play the role of a nice monkey. The purpose? Of course defeat enemies and collect as many bananas as possible.
• Wind-up Kinght 2- a 3D action / platformer in which you take on the role of a medieval knight armed with a sword and shield.
• Temple Run 2- one of the cornerstones of the endless running genre. The aim is to run; run avoiding the many obstacles on the path, jumping and collecting as many bonuses as possible. To move the character you need to tilt your smartphone / tablet, while swiping up or down you can jump and slide.
• Subway Surfers- another endless running in which you drive a little boy struggling with trains running in a train station.
• Zombie Tsunami- hilarious game in which you have to build a horde of zombies and devour as many survivors as possible. All made with nice cartoon 3D graphics and a markedly humorous style (it’s not a horror!).
• Super Cat World 2- mobile version of Super Cat World, Super Mario clone known to be one of the hardest games in the world.
• Mad Dex- nice platformer in which you play the role of a little red man expert in parkour. The aim is to reach the end of the various levels and overcome all obstacles to save your girlfriend, who has been kidnapped by a cruel monster.

• Nimble Quest- an action-RPG with 2D cartoon graphics that makes the happiness of all fans of the genre, especially those who in the past have had the opportunity to experience this kind of titles on Super Nintendo, Mega Drive or other historical consoles.
• MinuteQuest- very original old-school RPG (with “pixelated” 2D graphics) in which you have to defeat enemies by making a series of “taps” on the screen. It offers tons of options for character customization with all kinds of weapons and armor.

• Modern Combat 5- one of the best war FPS available on the Play Store. It features top-notch 3D graphics and provides various game modes, both single and multiplayer.
• Frontline Commando- very fast-paced 3D shooter with third person view and customizable weapons. The sequel is also available, but it isn’t as fun as the first.
• Brothers in arms 3- another must-see 3D war FPS. Includes 4 maps and 2 different game modes (Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch) for multiplayer plus a very addicting single mode.
• Major Mayhem- a war shooter with 3D cartoon graphics. Very funny.
• Shadow Fight 2- an action / RPG with fighting elements. The aim is to upgrade your fighter and defeat enemies in thrilling hand-to-hand combat. It includes dozens of very realistically animated martial techniques.
• Dead Trigger 2- 3D shooter with first person view in which the enemies are zombies and monsters of various kinds. One of the best in the free field, but not only.
• Into the Dead- another zombie themed game with first person view. It is a monster between an endless running and a shooter, it includes various weapons and has a 3D graphics of the highest level.
• Bloody Harry- 2D shooter with cartoony graphics in which you can equip your character with more than 15 different weapons.
• Minigore 2: Zombies- hilarious 3D shooter with “checkered” graphics (a bit a la Minecraft) in which the aim is to defend against hordes of zombies and other monsters using a vast arsenal of weapons.
• Monster Dash- hugely popular game made by the developers of Jetpack Joyride. It is a 2D endless running in which you have to avoid or shoot the monsters that appear on the screen. It has excellently crafted cartoon-style graphics.

• Candy Crush Soda Saga- if you have a mobile, you must have this game too. It is one of the most popular puzzle games in the world. The aim is to place three or more candies of the same type side by side to create the best possible combos respecting the maximum number of moves allowed. It is the sequel to the famous Candy Crush Saga.
• Angry Birds 2- another must-have title, another excellent sequel. In this new version of Angry Birds the aim of the game is always the same, to kill the enemy pigs by catapulting birds of various kinds.

• Smash ‘n’ Break- fun remake of the very classic Arkanoid characterized by beautiful graphics and an editor to customize the levels.
• Piano Tiles 2- hilarious music title in which the keys of a piano “fall” quickly on the screen and you have to press them in time (avoiding pressing on other areas of the screen).
• PAC-MAN 256- a reinterpretation of the legendary Pac-Man with 3D graphics and top view. Very enjoyable even for fans of the original.

• 2048- there was a time when nothing else was played, now its popularity has waned but it is still an enjoyable puzzle game. I am obviously referring to 2048, in which you have to move the numbered tiles within a 4 × 4 scheme, add those with the same digits and get to 2048 (or in any case to the highest number possible).
• Tetris- is there really anyone in the world who doesn’t know it? This is the quintessential puzzle game.
• 1010- a modern reinterpretation of Tetris in which there is an empty painting that must be filled with bricks, in order to form uniform rows and columns.
• Shoot Bubble- clone of the famous Puzzle Bubble in which you have to shoot colored bubbles on the screen and combine them with those already present in the level, in order to make them burst.
• Crossy Road- revised and corrected version of the famous Frog with colorful 3D graphics. The aim of the game, of course, is to get your character (a pet) from point A to point B on a route while avoiding the racing cars.
• Roll the Ball- very relaxing pastime in which you have to move the pieces of a path in order to get a ball from point A to point B. Simple, but compelling.
• Timberman- one of those addicting games! You guide a lumberjack who has to cut a tree with an ax while avoiding the branches, which quickly appear on the left and right of the screen.
• AlphaBetty Saga- a game very similar to the “old” Ruzzle created by the developers of Candy Crush Saga. The aim is to compose as many words as possible using the letters on the screen.

Sport

Are you a football or basketball fan? Do you love racing on two or four wheels? So here are the games for you, those dedicated to various sports and engines.
