Which smartphone to buy for 150 euros
Are you about to buy a new smartphone and would you like some advice in this regard? No problem, that’s what I’m here for. Tell me a little: what is the budget you have at your disposal? 150 euros ? Well, it’s not very high, I have to say, but don’t worry, I assure you that today it is possible to buy more than valid phones even at this figure.
As you can surely guess, for 150 euros you cannot expect to have a top-of-the-range smartphone: you will have to make some sacrifices in relation to the build quality of the device, its photographic performance and computing power, but don’t think you have to give up. who knows how many things: now for daily use – therefore for the use of social networks, the execution of a few games, listening to music and browsing the Web – the 150 euro terminals are able to offer a not very distant user experience from that of the top of the range.
When we start talking about build quality, running applications or “heavy” games and other details that still partially justify the purchase of phones worth more than 500 euros, the situation changes. But now let’s not get too lost in small talk. Let’s focus on your needs and see which smartphone to buy for 150 euros .

How to choose a 150 euro smartphone
Even if the price limit – in this case 150 euros – does not allow many differences in terms of performance and technical specifications, cheap smartphones are not all the same: they can have very specific functions, characteristics and peculiarities that we must learn to evaluate and distinguish. So let’s see what are the specifications to which we need to pay more attention and how to judge them during the purchase phase.
Display
The display is one of the most important components of a smartphone and there are several characteristics that must be taken into consideration to evaluate its actual quality.
- Size– this is the easiest aspect to evaluate. Quite simply, the more the display size increases, the greater the pleasure you have in the use of multimedia content. The work is also more comfortable, as is the reading of the texts. However, a larger screen also equates to less handling of the phone. However, the construction materials (for example, telephones with metal shells tend to be slippery) and the size of the bezels also greatly influence the handling. In short, the assessments must be made on a case-by-case basis, possibly by examining the smartphone closely.
- Resolution– the resolution is a value, expressed in pixels , which indicates the number of points from which the image reproduced on the screen is composed. As you can easily imagine, a higher resolution equates to sharper content reproduced on the screen. The most popular resolutions in $ 150 phones are HD (1280 x 720 pixels) and Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolutions .
- Pixel density– is another parameter that allows you to understand the degree of sharpness of the content reproduced on the phone screen. It is measured in ppi (pixels per inch) and indicates, precisely, the number of pixels reproduced in each inch of the screen.
- Type of panel– smartphone displays can also be distinguished according to the technologies they use. The displays based on IPS LCD technology are backlit, ensure a very faithful color reproduction and are seen quite well under sunlight (then the specific quality of the panels must be evaluated case by case), while the displays based on AMOLED / Super technology AMOLED (not very common in the low-cost environment) do not require backlighting and therefore ensure deeper blacks – because the black pixels are effectively turned off – and lower energy consumption. On the other hand, they look a little less well under the sunlight and tend to return overly saturated colors.
- Notch– in recent generations almost all smartphones are sold with large displays that almost completely occupy the front surface. I said almost because often a small part of the display is occupied by what is called a notch , a horizontal or drop-shaped insert that includes the front camera, the phone capsule and other sensors. It is not a beautiful feature to look at, but it is often an indispensable solution for the correct functioning of some features. Almost all devices with notch support face unlock, but often it is a 2D recognition system, not as secure as the 3D one of more advanced terminals (and therefore not usable to authorize payments or other “delicate” operations).
Processor and RAM
Processor and RAM are two components that have a decisive influence on the performance of a phone. The processor, as you probably already know, is a bit like the brain of the smartphone: it is the one that performs all the calculations and based on its power, the device is able to perform all daily operations more or less quickly. The power of the processor (which in smartphones is included in the SoC , a chip that also includes the graphics processor and other components necessary for the operation of the phone) is measured based on the number of cores , i.e. of processing units it has, and the operating frequency of the latter (which is measured in GHz ).
RAM, on the other hand, is the memory where the data of running applications and processes are temporarily hosted. The more GB of RAM there are in a smartphone, the better the management of multi-tasking by the latter, consequently the transition from one app to another is more fluid, there are no blocks, freezes, etc. Currently, at least 2GB of RAM is recommended for a good user experience.
Internal memory and expandability
Internal memory is the one reserved for storage , i.e. the permanent storage of data, applications and operating system. It can be fixed or expandable . In the latter case, the smartphone offers the possibility of increasing the memory for apps and data by moving part of them to external memory units, i.e. on microSD cards .
But be careful, not all smartphones with expandable memory allow you to transfer all apps to microSD and set the memory card as the main memory unit. You need to check this feature model by model.
Another important thing to underline is that in order not to “castrate” the overall performance of the phone, you need to buy a high quality microSD card. If you need more information about it, check out my microSD buying guide .
Battery
The battery is the component on which the autonomy of the smartphone depends. Its capacity is measured in milliampere hours (mAh) and, consequently, the more mAh there is, the greater the autonomy of the phone should be. I use the conditional because in the “real world” there are also other factors that deeply influence the degree of autonomy of a smartphone, first of all the level of optimization of the operating system and the energy efficiency of the processor.
A smartphone with a high-capacity battery but with poorly optimized software and / or a “wasteful” processor almost always has less autonomy than a smartphone equipped with a nominally less powerful battery but with well-optimized software and a thrifty processor in the use of energy. In short, even this parameter must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by reading online reviews or doing tests in first person.
The battery can be fixed or removable . In the second case, it can be easily removed and replaced with another (in order to always carry a spare battery with you and use it in case of need). Charging times , which can be variable, also need to be evaluated .
4G / 5G support and connectivity
Almost all cheap smartphones now support fast 4G / LTE networks but, beware, because support for these networks is not the same on all phones.
To begin with, it must be said that LTE technology is divided into various categories and each category corresponds to a different theoretical maximum download and upload speed. Therefore, if you want to make the most of the Italian 4G / LTE networks, you should inquire about the categories of LTE supported by the smartphone you are about to buy. I advise you to take a device compatible with LTE networks of category 6 or higher, in order to take advantage of mobile networks up to 300Mbps in download.
Another very important thing to underline is that the 150 euro smartphones can be imported from China and the models designed for the Asian market may not be equipped with support for the 20 band of the LTE . Band 20 is the one that operates on 800Mhz frequencies and is used by some operators, for example WINDTRE, to carry the 4G signal in some areas. If you buy a smartphone without 20 band support, you may find yourself without a 4G network (therefore with only 3G available) in certain areas where the signal is not very strong.
Definitely rarer is the presence of support for 5G , an evolution of the 4G network (therefore even faster), which will probably arrive on cheaper devices only later. For the moment it is reserved almost exclusively to the top and middle range.
As far as Wi-Fi networks are concerned, the presence of support for dual-band 5GHz networks and that of wireless AC technology that allows data to be transferred within the local network at a maximum speed of 1.3Gbps should be evaluated.
Dual-SIM support
Many smartphones from 150 euros, especially those made in China, have dual-SIM support . This means they allow you to use two cards and have two phone numbers at the same time. However, very important clarifications must be made.
First of all, it must be said that the vast majority of inexpensive dual-SIM phones are dual-SIM dual stand-by (DSDS) and this means that while the first SIM is engaged in a call, the second is unreachable (only dual- Full active SIM allow you to have the two cards always available, but they are very rare). The Internet connection, on the other hand, is available in 3G / 4G on one card, while the other travels in 2G (therefore, in practice, it allows you to make phone calls only), but fortunately the possibility of switching is almost always offered. of the 3G / 4G connection from one SIM to another without physically moving the cards (an operation that takes place via software and which is technically defined as a hot switch ).
It must also be said that in some cases the second SIM slot is shared with that of the microSD . This means that you have to decide whether to use two SIMs or whether to expand the memory of the smartphone: you cannot do both at the same time.
Operating system
In the context of cheap smartphones, not many evaluations can be made regarding the operating system. iOS must be discarded a priori as there are no iPhones sold for 150 euros (if not very old second or third hand models, which frankly I do not recommend!); Windows 10 Mobile has now been completely blocked and you will no longer find a device with this OS if you do not use used phones. This is why all that remains is to focus on Android , the Google home operating system that offers many applications, games and which, thanks to its high degree of customization, adapts very well to the needs of various types of users.
The only aspects you need to evaluate before buying an Android smartphone are: the version of the operating system installed on the latter, the availability of future updates and the presence or absence of bloatware, that is software, often useless, that the manufacturer puts “standard” on the phone and that are often quite difficult to remove. Personally, I do not recommend smartphones sold with Android versions prior to 6.0 (the most recent one, at the moment, is 7.0 but soon 8.0 will also arrive) and with heavy customizations by manufacturers. Updates are guaranteed, at least on paper, for 18 months, but not all manufacturers release them in a timely manner and therefore, especially in the context of low-cost smartphones, it is easy to find phones that are no longer updated after a few months of purchase. .
If you decide to buy a Chinese imported smartphone, inform yourself about the presence of the Italian language and the Play Store in Android. Some terminals from the Asian market, in fact, are supplied with Android in English (or even Chinese) and without the Google Play Store and it is not always easy to correct these two “defects”.
Cameras
Given that it is difficult to find excellent value cameras in smartphones from 150 euros, before buying a phone I recommend that you also inquire about the photographic performance of the latter.
The values that you need to analyze more carefully are those relating to the number of megapixels of the cameras (i.e. the number of pixels, expressed in millions, which make up the photos taken by the front and rear cameras); the presence of a stabilizer so as not to create shaky videos and photos; the maximum resolution of the videos that the smartphone is able to capture and the aperture of the diaphragm , which is measured in f / xx and determines the amount of light that the lens is able to capture (consequently its ability to make clear shots in conditions of poor lighting).
If you don’t want to go crazy among all these technical values, do a good search on Google and look for some photos or example videos made with the smartphone you are interested in: in this way you can evaluate its real performance.
Other characteristics
Other features that I recommend you take into consideration are the presence of a fingerprint sensor to unlock the smartphone using your finger (very convenient!), Which can be found on the back or side of the device; the support OTG to connect your smartphone to sticks, USB keyboards and mice; The NFC support for micro-transactions and interaction with other devices that support this technology; the resistance to water and dust ; the presence of notification LEDs , backlit keys and the performance of the audio sector (which can be mono or stereo).
If you buy an import terminal, then, pay close attention to the terms of the guarantee , which may be different from those of the standard Italian guarantee.
