What do the checkmarks mean in whatsapp?

Meaning of gray and blue ticks next to sent messages in WhatsApp.

When sending messages in the WhatsApp messenger, certain icons appear next to the text. First, a clock icon is displayed, which indicates the process of sending a message. Then this icon is replaced by ticks that differ in number (one or two) and in color (gray and blue).

We tell you what the checkmarks in WhatsApp mean, and what status of the sent message they indicate.

One gray tick in WhatsApp

After the user has typed the message and sent it, a clock icon will appear next to the text. It means the sending process, which may be interrupted if the mobile Internet or Wi-Fi suddenly stops working on the device.

If the upload was successful, the clock icon will instantly change to one gray checkmark.

Sending messages in plain language occurs in two stages:

  1. The user’s message is sent from his phone not a WhatsApp server.
  2. A message from the WhatsApp server is sent to the interlocutor’s phone.

One gray check mark means that the first stage of sending was successful – the message was received on the server. However, the message has still been sent from the server to the interlocutor’s phone. Usually one gray tick is replaced by two almost instantly.

If the gray checkmark persists, the cause may be one of the following:

  • The other party’s phone is unavailable or turned off.
  • There is no mobile Internet and Wi-Fi on the interlocutor’s device.
  • The interlocutor has turned off all notifications on the phone.
  • The user has been added to the black list of this interlocutor.

Thus, one gray tick indicates that the sending was successful, but the interlocutor has not yet received the message. As soon as his device becomes active (or the Internet connection is restored), the message will be received.

Whatsapp two gray ticks

After the message has passed the second stage of sending and arrived from the server in WhatsApp to the interlocutor’s device, two gray checkmarks appear next to the text. They mean that the user has received a notification about the sent message, but has not yet read it.

However, in some cases, two gray checkmarks may remain even if the interlocutor has already read the sent message. This happens in the following situations:

  1. The interlocutor read the message from the “curtain” by opening the notification panel, but without entering the application.
  2. The interlocutor has disabled the display of message delivery reports. This can be said with certainty if he sent a reply, and the gray checkmarks of the previous message still did not change to blue.

Thus, two gray checkmarks mean that the interlocutor has received the message, but has not yet read it, or read it in such a way that the user does not know about it.

Two blue ticks in whatsapp

When the message was successfully “delivered” to the interlocutor’s phone, and was also read, the two gray checkmarks are replaced by two blue checkmarks. By this icon, it is safe to say that the user entered the chat and read the message that was sent.

You can even find out how long ago the message was read – select it and click the “Data” button. This menu will indicate when the message was delivered and when it was read.
