R.saver – program for recovering deleted data
R.saver is a free program for recovering lost data on a computer, aimed at ordinary users. R.saver recovers data from USB flash drives, hard drives, memory cards, floppy disks and other storage media.
Many users are faced with situations when, as a result of a user’s own mistake, a PC software or hardware failure, or the action of viruses, important data is lost on a computer or removable media. Situations can be very different.
For example, a logical disk, a hard disk partition or individual directories disappeared on the PC, some files disappeared, the file stopped opening in the corresponding program, the storage medium was formatted by mistake, the necessary data was accidentally deleted. Agree that this is a rather unpleasant situation.
What to do if the data has been lost? It is possible to recover deleted or lost files using specialized programs, subject to certain conditions.
The chances of recovering lost data increase in the following cases:
- The storage medium has not been used since the loss of data. Otherwise, physical destruction of information may occur by overwriting with new data the disk space occupied by old files.
- The data recovery program should be launched from a different partition than the one being restored, so that the application itself does not overwrite some data on the problematic storage medium.
- You need to save the data to another place, and not to where the recovery took place.
On the contrary, the chances of successful recovery of lost information worsen in the following situations:
- Using specialized utilities to fix file system errors.
- In the event of a physical failure of the storage medium.
In any case, the user should try to recover the lost information using a specialized program. In this review, we use R.saver, which is well suited for photo, video and audio data recovery.
When carrying out data recovery work, keep in mind that it is not always possible, for various reasons, to recover lost information.
Features of the R.saver program
R.saver is based on a paid product – UFS Explorer, designed for professional data recovery. R.saver works in Russian, the application is free for residents of the former USSR (except for the countries of Central Asia), when using the program for non-commercial purposes.
The main features of the R.saver program:
- Recovery of deleted files.
- Restoring information after formatting.
- Recovery of damaged file systems.
- File recovery by signatures.
The program works in NTFS, FAT/FAT32, exFAT file systems, supports reading in file systems on partitions in operating systems macOS, Linux, BSD, Unix, etc.
To download the program to your computer, you need to go to the official R.saver website – R.LAB, located at: rlab.ru/tools/rsaver.html.
From the article you will learn how to use R.saver: step-by-step instructions for recovering deleted files using this program. Work in the R.saver program takes place in several stages:
- Select a drive to search for lost files.
- Perform analysis to obtain information about the available data.
- View scan results, select files for recovery.
- Recovery of lost information.
Installing R.saver
The R.saver program is supplied in a ZIP archive. The application does not require installation on a PC. It is desirable to unpack the program from the archive to another disk, different from the one being restored. For example, put the program files on another disk partition or on another USB flash drive.
The folder will contain two R.saver.exe files: the r.saver32 file, designed to run on 32-bit Windows operating systems, and the r.saver64 file, for 64-bit Windows systems.
Run the corresponding file by double-clicking on it with the left mouse button.
R.saver: recover lost data
After starting the application, a program window will open with the R.saver instruction, which is desirable to read. Check the boxes for “I have read and understood the above information” and, if you wish, “Don’t show me this information again” and then click on the “Let’s get started” button.
In the first step, the program determines the devices currently available on the computer. The “Logical volumes” tab displays the disks of the computer, marked with the corresponding letters. In my case, these are two hard drives, one of which is divided into two partitions (“C:” and “D:”), an external hard drive and a USB drive.
The Physical Disks tab only displays physical disks: two PC hard drives, an external hard drive, and a flash drive.
The user needs to select a volume to search for lost files. You can do this from both tabs. Identify the desired drive by drive letter, drive designation, or size.
In this example, I will be looking for information on a removable USB flash drive. The flash drive is highlighted in the program by size, disk name and appearance.
My flash drive currently has a Windows boot image, it used to have a different image, and the drive used to have various types of files that I moved between computers. Before creating a bootable flash drive, this USB drive was formatted, all information was deleted from it. Let’s see if the program can find something from the previous files there.
Select the required disk, click on the “Continue” button.
In the second step, the contents of the storage are analyzed and the lost files are searched for. Depending on the size of the data, the analysis process can take a significant amount of time.
In the third step, after the scan is completed, the R.saver program displays the found files in its window:
- All found information is displayed in the “All files” tab.
- The Lost Files tab displays the detected deleted files.
- The Available Files tab displays the files available on the disk.
Carefully review all the places where you can find lost information in all tabs. In my example, you can see that several images were found in the Windows image files. They appeared there when I used a bootable flash drive to quickly transfer a few screenshots from my laptop to my desktop PC. Then I deleted these images from the flash drive.
The “$LostFiles” folder contains files whose location information is lost. View the contents of this folder.
Pay attention to the “Additional found files” section.
Select the image, if the image is displayed in the program window, then this image can be restored.
Some detected files can be viewed in the program window. To do this, click on the “View” button.
Select the files you want to restore, click on the “Restore Selected” button.
In the fourth step, R.saver will generate a list of suitable storages where you can save the recovered data. The recovered data will be saved to the “Recovered” folder (this name can be changed), which will be located in the root of the selected drive.
The program window displays information about the number of selected files, the total size of the files.
Pay attention to the size of the recovered data so that the save location has enough space to accommodate it. Each volume lists the available free space.
In this example, I am recovering data from a removable flash drive, so I choose one of the volumes on the computer’s hard drive. The recovered information will be placed in a different location than the original.
Click on the “Start Recovery” button.
Check the result of the R.saver program. Click on the “Go to Recovered Data” button to open the “Recovered” folder and make sure that the necessary files are backed up.
To terminate the application, click on the “End” button.
In the “Confirmation” window, click on the “Yes” button.
My experience with R.saver
In conclusion, I will write about my personal experience of using this program in a difficult situation. Some time ago, quite a long time ago, my external hard drive failed with the necessary information, which included photos, videos, documents and other necessary data.
I tried a lot of programs at work, but they could not identify or open the problem drive in order to start data recovery tasks. Only two programs were able to open the disk and almost completely restore all the information: R.saver (then the first version with a different interface) and R-Studio.
Article Conclusions
With the free R.saver program, the user can recover lost information in case of unexpected loss or erroneous deletion. The program will check the storage medium, find files that can be recovered. The user selects the data and R.saver performs its recovery.
