How to set up Gmail

How to set up Gmail on PC

Gmail’s e-mail can be consulted from a computer either via Webmail – therefore directly from the browser – or by means of special clients for managing e-mails . In this chapter I will explain, in detail, how to change the settings of the online mailbox and how to configure the latter in the more “traditional” email clients.

How to set up Gmail from a browser

Through the Web version of Gmail , in addition to consulting and sending emails, it is possible to modify some specific settings for the mailbox. To proceed, go to the home page of the service and, if necessary, log in by indicating your Google account credentials , in the appropriate fields.

Now, click on the gear symbol at the top, to view the quick options of the mailbox, in a dedicated panel: the display density , the graphic theme , the style of the mailbox, the position of the mailbox. reading and threading .

To view all the Gmail settings, click instead on the View all settings button , located at the top of the panel opened just now: the next screen is divided into tabs, each of which allows you to access a specific category of adjustments.

• General: Here you will find general settings related to the service, such as language, default prefix for phone numbers, page size, timer for unsubscribing outgoing mail, reply options, text style, image management, spell checking and automatic correction. Furthermore, from this panel you can adjust the settings related to quick replies, desktop notifications and keyboard shortcuts, as well as customize your profile photo, labels and signature.
• Labels: from here you can manage the labels that can be associated with email messages.
• Inbox: From here you can change the behavior of the Inbox (mailbox style, categories displayed, reading pane, importance indicators, and so on).
• Accounts and import: this section allows you to manage the import of messages from other accounts, to add other email addresses to be managed through Gmail Web and to allow or disallow other users to read messages.
• Filters and blocked addresses: this section allows you to create, modify or cancel filters and lists of blocked addresses .
• Forwarding and POP / IMAP: from here you can customize the settings on message forwarding and enable or disable the POP and IMAP protocols.
• Add-ons: from here you can manage the add-ons associated with the mailbox.
• Chat and Meetings: This section allows you to adjust settings related to the Hangouts service .
• Advanced: from here you can change other mailbox options (auto-advance, templates, keyboard shortcuts, and so on).
• Offline: this section allows you to activate or deactivate mail archiving in offline mode (you can access messages already received without connection; outgoing mail will be sorted during the first useful Internet connection).
• Themes: from here you can define a graphic theme for the web mailbox.

After making the necessary changes, remember to press the Save / Save Changes button , usually located at the bottom of each section, to apply them.

How to set up Gmail in Outlook

To set up Gmail on Outlook , the famous program for managing e-mail from Microsoft, simply activate access to the Gmail mailbox via the IMAP protocol (operating from the Web) and, subsequently, configure the e-mail client to access the account in question.

So, to start, connected to Gmail Web and, after logging in to the mailbox, click on the gear symbol that resides at the top right and choose to access the service settings . Now, select the Forwarding and POP / IMAP tab , locate the IMAP Access box and put the check mark next to the Enable IMAP option , leaving all other settings unchanged. Finally, click on the Save changes button located at the bottom.

Now you are ready to add your Gmail address to Outlook: after opening the program in question, click on the File tab (top left), press the Add account button located in the panel that appears and enter your Gmail address in the appropriate text box.

Once this is done, click on the Connect button , wait for the password entry request and, when prompted, enter this information in the appropriate field (if you have activated two-step verification , you will also need to authorize access via app or code safety); now, authorize the communication between Outlook and Gmail by clicking on the Authorize button and wait a few moments for the program to automatically detect the mail server parameters.

After a few moments, you should see a window relating to the successful configuration of the mailbox: when this happens, remove the check mark from the box next to the item Configure Outlook Mobile also on my phone and click on the Done button to finish.

If you wish, you can also configure Gmail in other e-mail programs (such as Windows 10 Mail, Thunderbird, and so on), following a rather similar procedure; however, in some cases, you may be asked to enter the parameters relating to the incoming mail server (IMAP) and the outgoing mail server (SMTP). For your convenience, I’ll list them for you below.

How to set default Gmail

On Windows 10 and macOS operating systems , it is possible to ensure that “clickable” e-mail addresses are managed directly through Gmail (by opening a new browser window, or the program in which the mailbox was previously configured).

To do this, if you use Windows 10 , open the operating system settings , by clicking on the gear icon located on the left side of the Start menu (accessible by pressing the flag symbol resident at the bottom left), press the App icon and then on the item Default apps , visible on the left. Finally, click on the icon below the wording E-mail and choose the e-mail program or browser you prefer, among those listed.

On Mac , you can get the same result by opening the Mail application (the envelope icon that resides on the Dock ) and going to the Mail> Preferences… menu . Once in the new window, click on the General tab and use the Default Email Application drop-down menu to choose the program you want.

If, on the other hand, you have already configured the Gmail address in the program you usually use to manage e-mail and would like to set it as the default for sending new messages, proceed in this way.

• Outlook: click the File button , click the Account Settings button twice in a row, open the E-mail tab and locate the account name to set as default. When you have found it, click on it and press the Set as Default button , located at the top.
• Apple Mail: open the application, click on the File> Preferences… menu located at the top, open the Writing tab and use the Send new messages from drop-down menu to select the default account for sending new emails.

How to set up Gmail in Italian

Is the Gmail web page displayed in a language other than Italian? In this case, all you have to do is access your e-mail box, click on the gear- shaped button at the top, press the button at the top of the panel that appears, the one relating to all settings (in English, for example, it is called See all settings ) and open the tab relating to the general settings , from the page that appears later (in English, for example, it is called General ).

Finally, locate the drop-down menu dedicated to the Gmail display language (in English, it is called Gmail display language ), click on it and select Italian from the choices offered. Finally, click on the button to save changes at the bottom of the page (in English, it’s called Save changes ) and wait for the Gmail web interface to be loaded again: if everything went well, it should be translated entirely into Italian.

How to set up Gmail on Android

Now let’s see how to set up Gmail on Android for use through a dedicated app.

How to set up Gmail account

Generally, you can access the Gmail account configured on Android right away, simply by opening the default email app on the device.

However, if you need to associate a second Gmail address, or you have not yet added your email address to the device, do this: first, open the Android settings , touching the gear symbol that resides in the Home screen or in the drawer, select the Account / Accounts and synchronization item and tap on the Add account option , visible at the bottom.

Now, tap on the Google icon and, when prompted, verify your identity using facial recognition, the fingerprint sensor, the pattern or the device password; then, enter your Gmail address in the appropriate field, tap the Next button , also enter the password and press Next again ; if requested, complete the two-factor authentication , following the instructions that appear on the screen.

Finally, tap the Accept button and wait for the account to be added to the system; now, to verify that the emails are synchronized correctly, tap the name of the address you just added, tap on the Account Synchronization item and make sure that the lever / box corresponding to Gmail is set to ON / selected , otherwise you do it.

Usually, the Gmail app for Android is pre-installed on all devices with Google services and, therefore, the Play Store; if not, you can still get it at any time: start the Google store, touch the magnifying glass symbol and type the word gmail in the search field that appears (you can shorten the procedure by following this link directly ).

Once this is done, open the page dedicated to the app (which is published by Google LLC), tap the Install button and, when requested, authenticate via facial recognition, fingerprint or Google account password, to complete the download.

You can start the app by touching the Open button , or by recalling it via the icon that, in the meantime, has been opened in the drawer.

How to set default Gmail

Have you installed the Gmail app and, now, would you like to set it as default and replace it with the one currently in use? Nothing simpler. To start, open the operating system settings , tap the Apps and notifications and Default apps items, tap the Email option and tap the Gmail icon , to set it as the default app.

In some cases, the path to follow may be slightly different: on Xiaomi devices animated by the MIUI operating system, you must go to Settings> Apps> Manage applications , touch the button (⋮) located at the top right and choose the Default Apps item , from the menu that appears. That’s all!

How to set up Gmail in Italian

If you use the Gmail app, you will surely have noticed that the same language used on Android is used within it. Therefore, to set up Gmail in Italian it is essential to apply the same change to the entire operating system. But be careful: by doing so, the language of all Android menus and options will be changed, as well as the one in use for some applications installed on it.

To proceed, taking a device set to the English language as an example, touch the gear symbol placed in the drawer, to access the Android settings, go to the System / General settings> Languages ​​& Input / Language> Languages sections and, if the language Italian is already present, make a long tap on the symbol = corresponding to it and drag it upwards to apply it.

Otherwise, tap Add a language , choose Italian from the proposed list and move the newly added language up to set it as default. More info here .

How to set up Gmail on iPhone

Now, let’s see together how to set up a Gmail account on iPhone , both through the default iOS Mail app, and through the official Gmail application. Keep in mind that you can also perform the same steps to set up Gmail on iPad : the procedures are identical.

How to set up Gmail account

To configure Gmail accounts in the iOS Mail app, first go to the iPhone settings , by tapping on the gear icon located on the Home screen or in the App Library, reach the Mail and Accounts sections and tap on the Add account item .

Now, tap the Google icon , tap the Continue button and, when prompted, first enter your Gmail address in the appropriate field, then tap the Next button and then your password . If prompted, complete two-factor authentication , following the directions given to you.

Finally, make sure that the lever relative to Mail is set to ON (otherwise you do it), in order to automatically synchronize the mail messages, and choose whether or not to automatically update the remaining elements ( Contacts , Calendars and Notes ); finally, tap the Save resident item at the top right, to add the account to the “iPhone by”.

It should be noted that by configuring Gmail in the default iOS / iPadOS Mail app, it is not possible to receive push notifications (in real time) for received messages.

If you prefer to consult Google’s e-mail via a separate app (and thus also receive notifications in real time), you can install the official Gmail application for iPhone and iPad ; to do this, open the App Store , tap the Search button and type the word gmail in the field that appears on the screen.

Now, tap on the first result returned, tap the Get button and start the app download and installation by authenticating with Face ID , Touch ID or Apple ID password .

How to set default Gmail

After adding the Gmail account to iPhone, you can set it as the default e-mail address of Mail, in order to use it as the first choice for outgoing mail: therefore open the iOS settings , tap on the Mail item , then on the ‘ Default Account option (located at the bottom of the screen) and tap on the Gmail item , to finish.

If, on the other hand, you want to use Gmail as an app used to manage e-mail, instead of Mail, go to the Settings> Gmail menu , tap the App item for the default e-mail and tap on the Gmail item to select it. It was very simple, wasn’t it?

How to set up Gmail in Italian

By default, the Gmail app uses the same language used for the iPhone operating system. So, if it is your intention to set Gmail in Italian, you have to intervene on the iOS settings: by doing so, however, you will change the display language for all the other installed applications, as well as for the menus and operating system settings.

Do you want to proceed anyway? In this case, if, for example, the “iPhone by” is set in English, open the iOS settings , by tapping on the symbol of the gear residing in Home, select the items General> Language & Region> iPhone Language and choose the Italian language from the menu that appears later. Finally, touch the Done item and then the Change to Italian button . More info here .
