How to find coordinates on Google Maps

If you want to know the GPS coordinates of a location or an exact point on the geographical map of Google Maps, what you have to do is pay the utmost attention to the advice that I will give you in the next chapters, in which I will tell you about the procedures to follow on your PC, smartphone. and tablet.

Computer

In case you want to see the coordinates on Google Maps from your computer, first of all, you have to go to the official website of the service. You don’t need to sign in with your Google account to get the information you’re looking for, but they might be useful if you want to bookmark the places you see.

After viewing the main screen of Google Maps, then use the bar at the top left to search for the place of your interest. At this point, click on the result that corresponds to your search, among the options that are shown to you, and you will be able to view the place of your interest on the map.

Once this is done, click with the right mouse button on the red marker that is shown to you on the map or anywhere around it. In the box that is shown to you, then choose the item What’s here? , in order to activate the display of a small screen in the lower area: in this screen you will be shown the name of the place and the GPS coordinates to reach it. It was simple, wasn’t it?

In general, the procedure described above can also be carried out without searching for a place first. In fact, to get the coordinates, just click with the right mouse button on a point of your interest on the map and select the item What’s here? from the pane that appears.

Smartphones and tablets

The free Google Maps app is available on smartphones and tablets, through which it is possible, among other things, to see the GPS coordinates of a place. In case you have not already installed the app in question, you can easily remedy it using the instructions you find below.

If you have a smartphone or tablet Android, the app  Google Maps should be pre-installed. In case you do not find it, you can download it from this link, by pressing the Install button and waiting for the download and automatic installation of the same.

If you have an iPhone or an iPad, however, you need to download the app through the iOS App Store. Then reach the link I just provided and press the Get button. Once this is done, unlock the download and installation of Google Maps via the Face ID, Touch ID or password of the iCloud account, waiting for the completion of the procedure.

To find out the coordinates of a place on Google Maps, first start the official app of the service, using its icon that you find on the home screen. Then, on the main Maps screen, scroll the map, in order to search for the place of your interest, or do the same operation using the geolocation of your device: in the latter case, if you do not know how to proceed, I suggest you read this my guide dedicated to the topic. You can also use the text box above to speed up your search.

Now, press and hold your finger on the point on the map corresponding to the place whose GPS coordinates you want to know, in order to place a red marker on it. If the marker has been placed on a registered location, a box with its name will be shown at the bottom. Otherwise, you will read the wording Placeholder inserted, always in the box below.

In the case of a registered place, if you operate from Android, you can view the coordinates in the top bar. On iOS, however, you have to tap on the tab at the bottom and scroll the screen, until you find a wording containing the GPS coordinates of the place.

For unregistered places, where the wording Placeholder inserted at the bottom is shown, both on Android and iOS, press on the latter and scroll the screen, in order to read the coordinates next to the GPS icon.

How to enter coordinates on Google Maps

In case you know the GPS coordinates of a place, you can view it on Google Maps in a simple and fast way, which I will tell you about in the next lines. I warn you that the procedure that I will show you is valid both in  the web version of Google Maps and in the Maps app for Android and iOS.

Before, however, explaining how to enter the coordinates on Google Maps, it seems to me a duty to make you understand the format to use for entering the coordinates, so that the visualization of the places takes place without problems. In fact, you should know that Google Maps supports different GPS coordinate formats, which I will list for you below.

• Degrees, minutes and seconds( DMS ): 45 ° 27’50.8 ″ N 9 ° 11’30.933 ″ E
• Degrees and decimal minutes( DMM ): 45 27.84666, 9 11.51556
• Decimal degrees( DD ): 45.464111, 9.191926
• Plus Code: F57R + JQ

The foresight to follow to avoid making mistakes is to use the point as a decimal separator. The comma should only be used to separate latitude and longitude values. Furthermore, in this regard, it is important that the latitude is always expressed as the first value, followed by the longitude.

Another important thing to underline is that the numerical values ​​must always be included in a specific range: the latitude can have values ​​between -90 and 90 , while the longitude between -180 and 180. The plus code, on the other hand, is a string that allows you to easily identify and share a place on Google Maps and can be viewed in the known places tab.

Now that you know the coordinate format, what you need to do is use the search bar at the top to view the location on the map. Then type in the GPS coordinates or the plus code and then press the Enter key on the PC keyboard or the magnifying glass icon in the virtual one of the smartphone or tablet. By doing so, if you have exactly performed what is indicated in the previous lines, you will be shown the place on the map.
