How to remove the Samsung screen lock: standard procedures

Let’s start by analyzing the methods to unlock the screen without any consequence on the data stored in the device: act from within Android , to completely disable the locking system (knowing the password, PIN, sequence or having the biometric system currently in use); or use Find My Device , a service from Samsung that allows you to delete all screen lock data over the Internet.

From Android

To completely remove the screen lock on Samsung smartphones and tablets, by disabling the security check, proceed as follows: first, open the operating system Settings , by tapping on the resident gear symbol on the Home screen or in the drawer of the device ; then tap on the Lock screen item and then on the Lock screen type option , located in the next panel.

Now, enter the PIN , password or unlock sign currently in use and tap on the Drag item , to ensure that the screen can be unlocked with a simple swipe from bottom to top, or None , to completely disable the lock screen (the device will unlock immediately after pressing the side key).

Keep in mind that, following this operation, the smartphone or tablet can be turned on and used by anyone in possession of it; moreover, any biometric data (face or fingerprint) saved will be removed and will have to be re-registered for future use.

Furthermore, the deletion of biometric data also involves all other apps that are configured to use them as a security system: for example, if you use a home banking app and have configured your fingerprint to authorize transactions, you will no longer be able to do so and you will necessarily have to rely on an alternative authentication system (single-use code generated via the app or received via SMS, token or other).

If, despite all the consequences of the case, you are sure you want to proceed anyway, tap the OK / Remove data button to erase the biometric data and set an unsecured unlock method.

Online

If, instead, you’re trying to remove the screen lock because it does not forget the password, code, or a sign that you had set earlier, you can make use of the Find my mobile from Samsung .

If you do not know, this is an official online service from Samsung that allows you to carry out some emergency operations, including restoring, locating and, above all, deleting only the block data (without the obligation to completely reset) , on the devices of the Korean company, acting remotely.

In order for everything to go smoothly, it is essential that the device on which you need to act meets some specific requirements, which I am going to explain to you below.

  • The smartphone / tablet must be turned on and connected to the Internet, even if subjected to the screen lock.
  • You must have previously set up a Samsung account, whose password it is essential to remember.
  • The remote unlocking function must already be active, which generally happens during the first power-on phase of the device, immediately after configuring the Samsung account. In any case, if you are reading this guide for preventive purposes and want to make sure of this, go to the Settingsmenu > [your name]> Find personal Android device and make sure that the levers corresponding to the words Activate and Remote unlock are set to ON , otherwise you do it.

If the device meets these requirements, deleting the lock screen information (PIN, password, sign, code and biometric data) is little more than a breeze: using the browser you prefer, connected to the home page of the service , press on the Login button and enter the credentials of the Samsung account configured on the smartphone or tablet, in the appropriate fields.

Now, click on the Login button , then on Continue and Accept (if necessary) and wait a few moments for the emergency toolbar to become visible on the screen. If you have multiple devices associated with the same account, make sure you work on the correct one by selecting the appropriate thumbnail visible at the top.

We are almost there: to delete all the lock screen information from the device, press the Unlock button twice in a row, re-enter the Samsung account password in the appropriate field and wait a few moments for the device to “forget” all the data block files previously stored. Following this operation, the screen will be immediately unlocked and the device can be used without any other hitches.

Reset the screen lock

As I mentioned in the opening bars of this tutorial, leaving the smartphone (or tablet) without any screen protection system could seriously endanger the data in it, exposing them to unauthorized access or, even worse, to embezzlement. .

For this reason, I advise you to immediately set up a new security system on the device, choosing it from those currently supported by Samsung-branded devices: alphanumeric password , numeric PIN , unlock sign (not recommended, as it is easily guessed) or biometric system (eg . face or fingerprint ).

To configure a secure locking device, open Settings Android, by tapping on any lot ‘ gear located on the Home screen or in the drawer of the app, simply tap on the items Lock screen and lock screen type and then select the mode of protection to be applied, among those available.

  • Password: This is a mostly secure unlocking method, as long as the password is generated with criteria. To avoid the use of elements that can be easily “guessed” (eg. Your name / date of birth, those of your loved one, a known anniversary and so on) and to prefer, instead, the use of sequences long and unpredictable , including characters of a different nature (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols, and via). I have given you some more tips on how to create a secure password in my dedicated guide. Once you have chosen the keyword , type it in the appropriate field, enter it for a second time (to avoid errors) and tap the OK button to apply it.
  • PIN: if you prefer to use a numeric unlock code, you can fall back on the PIN. On Samsung devices it must contain at least 4 digits which, ideally, should not correspond to easily understood combinations such as the infamous “0000”, “1234” or the date of birth: it would be like not having them. Once you have chosen the lock code, enter it in the appropriate field, indicate whether to confirm it without pressing OK or not (therefore after entering the last digit), touch the Continue button and enter it for a second time. To apply it, click on the Done button .
  • Sign: this is the release system which consists in “drawing” a particular sequence, on a nine-point grid. It is less secure than the previous solutions, as it could be easily memorized by those who assist in unlocking the device. If you intend to apply it anyway, once you have selected the dedicated item, draw the sequence on the nine-point pattern, tap on the Continue button and play it for a second time. To apply it, tap the OK button .
  • Biometric system: Almost all Samsung-branded smartphones and tablets allow you to unlock the screen using your biometric data , such as your face or fingerprint . To use this unlocking system, move one of the levers under the Biometric item to ON ( Face recognition or Fingerprint ), tap on the Continue button and, if you have not yet done so, configure an alternative unlocking methodto be used in case of unavailability of biometric data (password, PIN or sign). Next, proceed with configuring the security system you have selected.
    • Face: if you have chosen to configure your face , turn the front camera upwards , tap on the Continue button and record your face, framing it . Finally, indicate whether to stay on the lock screen once recognition is complete and complete the procedure by pressing the Done button . Currently, it is not possible to register more than one face.
    • Fingerprint: in this case, you have to place your finger on the sensor when prompted and complete the acquisition of the fingerprint by lifting and resting it , even several times. When you are done, tap on the Continue button , complete the acquisition of the outermost parts of the impression and press the Done button to register it. If you wish, you can configure additional fingerprints for unlocking the device by returning to the previous screen and selecting the Add fingerprint item .

Please note that by accessing the Settings menu > Lock screen> Android secure lock settings , you can configure a series of additional settings, aimed at the security of the device: activate or deactivate the automatic lock with the screen off , the instant lock with the side key , automatic factory reset after 15 unsuccessful unlock attempts , deactivating Wi-Fi when locked (useful for keeping Find My Device working) and displaying the configured lock options on the lock screen.

How to remove the Samsung screen lock: emergency procedure

Do you need to delete the screen lock because you no longer remember the password or PIN needed to access the Samsung device but, alas, you cannot use any of the procedures mentioned above? I can give you a hand in this case too, but unfortunately I anticipate that you will almost certainly lose the data on your phone.

Alas, the only way to regain full possession of a “locked” Samsung smartphone whose access key you do not remember is to reset the system : an operation which, as known, leads to the cancellation of all data on the device.

The only hope is that you have been able to make a backup of your data in advance for a relatively short time: in this case, you will be able to experience the reset with a light heart and restore your data thanks to the previous backup. If not, you can learn from the lesson and start saving data at regular intervals: in this regard, I suggest you read my guide on how to backup on Android .

To restore the device to its factory settings, we will use the Recovery integrated in it, that is an operating system independent of Android, able to perform some particularly delicate operations on the smartphone or tablet, including recovery.

It must be emphasized that, once the reset is complete, it will be necessary to carry out a further unlocking procedure by entering, at the first subsequent start, the credentials of the Samsung account and / or those of the Gmail account configured previously, in order to unlock the system, respectively. Knox security and / or the default Android one. In case you don’t even remember the login credentials to your Gmail address, reading my tutorial on how to recover Google account can help you .

In the absence of this information, the smartphone (or tablet) will remain locked as a security measure and will remain unusable until the correct credentials are specified. I know, this anti-theft system can represent an additional obstacle, but it is the only one capable of almost completely eliminating the possibility of appropriation and misuse of a lost or stolen device.

Now that you know the consequences of unlocking your Samsung device, I can explain how to proceed. The first thing you need to do is turn off your smartphone or tablet completely: to be sure, press and hold the side power button for 10 seconds or more , until the screen goes dark completely and the device no longer shows signs of life. .

Now, from the device off, press the physical Volume Up key and, without releasing it, also press the power key of the device; when the screen lights up, release this last button while continuing to hold Volume Up , until you see the word Android Recovery appear on the device display.

Now, using the physical Volume Up and Volume Down keys , move to the Wipe data / factory reset item , press the side key to give OK and, in the same way, select the Factory data reset item , in order to start the device reset and the consequent deletion of all data from the memory, including those relating to unlocking the screen.

When the procedure is completed, the smartphone / tablet will start automatically and will ask you again to enter the Samsung or Google Google account chosen to use the phone; enter this last information, you will have to carry out the first configuration procedure of the device again, following the instructions that are shown to you. More info here .
