It is precisely at this juncture that the electronic identity card comes into play: in addition to being a “classic” identification document, the CIE can also be used as an instant digital recognition tool, thanks to the chip incorporated inside it and the PIN code of 8 digits supplied with the document (one part at the time of collection, the second by ordinary mail).

The authentication methods compatible with the CIE are mainly two: authentication with CIE 3.0 and smartphone/tablet with NFC chip or authentication with CIE and smart card reader for computers. Let me give you more details on this.

• Authentication with CIE 3.0 and NFC mobile device: to verify your identity, simply start the registration procedure with the chosen provider and, when requested, download the provider’s official app on the NFC device and bring the device card close to it. To complete the verification, simply enter the PIN of the identity card and that’s it. This identification system is instantaneous, does not require physical travel and is almost always free.
• Authentication with CIE and smart card reader: in this case, in addition to the CIE and the associated PIN code, it is necessary to have a computer and a smart card reader with the drivers correctly installed. To verify the identity when requesting the SPID identity, simply connect the reader to the computer, place the card on the reading surface and enter the PIN relating to the certificate contained in the CIE. Again, authentication is instant and almost always free.

How to register SPID with an electronic identity card

Having clarified the functioning of the CIE for the purpose of obtaining SPID, let me explain to you how to proceed, concretely, with the registration using the aforementioned method of verifying one’s identity.

First, you must choose one of the identity providers accredited by the Italian government, among those that support quick registration with CIE and NFC: Aruba (CIE and smart card reader for computers), Lepida (CIE and smart card reader for computers or smartphone/tablet with NFC), Namirial (CIE with smart card reader for computer), Poste Italiane (CIE and smartphone/tablet with NFC), Sielte (CIE with smart card reader for computer or smartphone/tablet with NFC) or Register (CIE with smart card reader for computers).

I would like to point out that all the other accredited certification bodies also allow you to use the electronic identity card as a standard identification document, but not always dedicated electronic tools: to verify your identity, you may in fact be required to issue a bank transfer from a Italian account made payable to you, to bring to you in person at an office, use a digital signature kit / remote and so on (I’ll tell you before long ).

Once you have chosen the certification body you prefer (they are all equivalent for the purposes of accessing the online services compatible with SPID), visit the relevant website, click on the button dedicated to registration and follow all the instructions you see on the screen.

Generally speaking, you should first be asked to verify your identity using the electronic identity card, with the procedure most suited to the means at your disposal (and to the chosen provider).

• CIE + smart card reader for PC: you must insert the CIE in the smart card reader for computers, acquire the certificate by pressing the appropriate button and enter the PIN of the card, when requested.
• CIE + NFC device: you must download the official app of the provider of your choice, select the option for access with CIE, enter the PIN of the card in the appropriate field and complete the identity verification by bringing the CIE chip close to the NFC reader of the device.

Once the verification is complete, you should see a form in which to enter your personal data, together with those of the SPID identity that you are about to create: name, surname, date and place of birth, front/back photo of the health card, social security number, e-mail address (to be used as the SPID username), account protection password, and so on.

Once the data entry phase is also completed, the request will be evaluated by the technical staff of the chosen provider and, within a few minutes (or a few hours), you should receive an e-mail message indicating the successful completion of the procedure and activation SPID credentials. As a concrete example, let me explain how to get a SPID with CIE from some enabled providers.

How to obtain SPID Poste with an electronic identity card

Among the providers that support the release of the SPID through CIE is Poste Italiane. To proceed using only the electronic identity card, you need a smartphone or tablet equipped with an NFC chip and the PosteID app, available for Android and iPhone: once the device store is open, use the search function to locate the app, press the Install / Get button corresponding to it and, if requested, authorize the download of the app by authenticating via facial recognition, fingerprint or password of the download account. In case of doubts or problems, you can find the complete procedure in my guide on how to download the PosteID app.

After downloading the app, launch it and press the Continue button several times, to view the app’s welcome pages and finally access its main screen. Now, tap the Register button located at the bottom of the screen, tap the option dedicated to the use of the electronic document and tap the item Electronic ID card located on the next screen.

At this point, if you have the CIE PIN available, tap on the I have the PIN option, press the Proceed button and enter the PIN of your electronic identity card, in the appropriate field. Once this is done, press the Confirm button located at the bottom of the screen and, when requested, authorize the PosteID app to use the NFC chip by pressing the Allow button.

Now, bring the document chip close to the NFC reader on the back of the device and hold it steady until reading is complete, in order to complete the identification of the identity and display the screen indicating the successful completion of the process (you should see the word Done! In tall).

At this point, press the Proceed button again and choose whether you want to complete the recording on the device you are using, by pressing the Continue button on this device, or continue on another device, by tapping the Change device button instead.

In the first case, you must fill out some forms with the requested information: a valid e-mail address (which will also act as a username for SPID access), a password to use to protect the account and a mobile number to associate with the ‘SPID identity; during this phase, you may need to verify the information requested by entering the single-use codes delivered by email and/or SMS.

After this step too, indicate your personal data in the fields displayed, press the Continue button again and, after having read the information documents relating to PosteID enabled for SPID, accept the conditions of use of the service and wait to receive the message about registration completed.

In the second case, instead, open the browser on the device to be used to complete the registration, connected to posteid.poste.it/de and enter the identification code that appears in the text box in the center of the screen. Once this is done, enter your tax code in the field provided, click on the Continue button and repeat the same steps seen for completing the registration via the app.

If, on the other hand, you do not have the PIN code associated with your CIE, tap on the item I do not have a PIN located in the screen dedicated to identification with electronic identity card, press the Proceed button twice consecutively and, after having PosteID authorized to use the camera, frame the front of the document and photograph it by pressing the appropriate button.

If the app is unable to scan the electronic document, due to blur or unsuitable light conditions, you will be asked to photograph the back of the document as well and manually enter any non-visible information (e.g. the date of birth).

Once the image/data acquisition is complete, press the Proceed button and, when prompted, bring the NFC chip of the CIE close to the device reader and do not move it away, until the recognition is completed.

To complete the personal identification, you will be asked to record a short video, again through the app, in which you will have to read a sentence generated randomly and displayed on the screen; Once this is done, you will also be asked to take a selfie holding the document photographed previously under your chin and to take front-back photos of your health care.

Once the identification is complete, choose whether to continue with the request for SPID credentials on the same device, or to change it and complete everything by entering an email to use as the SPID username, a password to protect the account and your personal data, as well as I pointed to you a few minutes ago.

Regardless of the authentication system chosen, once the data analysis by the Poste Italiane staff has been completed, you will receive a message at the e-mail address specified above, in which the activation of the SPID credentials will be confirmed. In the same message, there are also indications on how to obtain the level 3 SPID and the immediate suspension code, to be used if you want to revoke the credentials.

How to do SPID without an electronic identity card
