How to make an automatic door in Minecraft

How to make an automatic door in Minecraft: Now that, thanks to my advice, you have built your shelter in Minecraft, you are ready to make doors, in order to block the access passages for the creatures that populate the world of this famous game. You don’t want a simple door, however, but something automated, so that you don’t have to interact on it every time to open or close it. In fact, if you forget an open door in the middle of the night, you could risk finding zombies or skeletons wandering around your shelter.

This is how things are, am I right? Then I would be happy to know that you have come to the right place at the right time. In fact, in this guide of mine, I will show you how to make an automatic door on Minecraft, in a few simple steps. First of all, I will show you the materials necessary for the construction of a door and the resources you will need to create the mechanisms for automating its opening and closing. Next, I will show you the procedures to build a door and make it automatic, also offering you some tips for creating more complex systems, such as the use of fully automated secret passages.

I bet my introduction intrigued you to the point that you can’t wait to start reading this guide, right? So let’s not waste any more precious time and dedicate only a few minutes of your free time to me: all you have to do is sit comfortably and carefully read the tips you will find in this guide of mine. All that remains for me is to wish you a good read and, above all, good fun!

Gather the necessary materials

To make a door in Minecraft, you need to start by collecting all the materials useful for its construction. A door consists of only one type of resource: for example, if you want to build an acacia wood door, you will need to use acacia wood planks, while for an iron door, you will need to get iron ingots.

As for wooden doors, depending on the variety of material used, such as acaciabirch or fir, just to give you some examples, you can create doors with a different frame. For this reason, depending on the project you are carrying out, the use of one material over another can be a fundamental choice on an aesthetic level.

Furthermore, wooden doors can be opened and closed without the need for any automated system, simply by interacting on them. This happens, however, differently for those in iron, to which an opening mechanism, even automated, must be applied, using simple or complex systems, which I will talk about in the next chapter.

As for building materials, in case you want to make a wooden door, you will need to collect the lumber from the trees. This operation can also be done with bare hands, but I recommend the use of an ax, in case you need to create many doors for your shelter. Once you’ve obtained the wooden logs, place them on a workbench or in the Crafting section of the avatar’s inventory to convert them into wooden planks.

For the iron doors, on the other hand, you have to get the iron ingots, a resource that you can find as treasure in the chests scattered around the world of Minecraft. The fastest method, however, to obtain iron, is to collect it, using a pickaxe, by interacting on the iron veins that you find by digging in the underground of the world of Minecraft.

When you find a raw iron vein, you will need to interact on it with a pickaxe to extract the rough iron blocks. the latter must then be placed inside a furnace to convert them into iron ingots.

The materials listed above are the only ones you will need to make a door. As for opening systems, such as buttonsleversfootboards or Redstone circuits, you will need to collect additional resources.

Levers and buttons are opening mechanisms that do not properly fall within the automation systems, object of this guide, as they require an interaction on them to open a door. For this reason I will focus on other mechanisms, which I will illustrate in the next lines.

To make an automatic door in Minecraft, you need pressure plates, which allow you to open a door when the avatar is on them. Another useful object could be the daylight sensor, which makes sure that the doors remain open during the day, and then automatically close at night, so as not to allow dangerous nocturnal creatures to enter the shelter.

pressure plate is created in a workbench or in the Manufacturing section of the inventory by placing, in two slots, 2 units of crushed stone or wooden planks. For the daylight sensor, on the other hand, you will need to insert 3 units of glass3 units of Nether Quartz and 3 wooden plates in a workbench.

If the platform or the sensor has not been placed close to the door, you need to create Redstone circuits. This material is obtained by interacting with a pickaxe on the Redstone blocks, which you find in the underground of Minecraft.

Now that you know the resources you need to make a door in Minecraft, it’s time to start building it. First, make sure you have 6 units of wooden planks of a specific variety of your choice in your inventory. In case you want to make an iron door, you will need to get 6 iron ingots.

Once this is done, place the resources indicated above on 6 of the slots available in the workbench: you will have to insert them inside the slots of two adjacent columns. In case, you can help you through the project in the Recipes section, to automatically and correctly arrange the inventory resources in the workbench.

If you have followed to the letter what I have indicated in the previous lines, in the right slot you will be shown the preview of the door resulting from the processing. Now all you have to do is drag its icon to your inventory or a quick slot to equip it and place it in your shelter.

If you have built an iron door, as already mentioned in the previous chapter, you will not be able to open it with your bare hands and you will therefore have to use opening mechanisms. You can also use the latter on wooden doors, to avoid interacting on them.

In this chapter I will show you some simple mechanisms that are based on automating the opening and closing of a door, mainly using pressure plates.

First, make a 2-block vertical opening in the wall of your shelter, which will represent the door housing compartment. Once this is done, place the previously created door in this opening, making sure to carry out this operation from outside the building, in order to orient it in the right direction.

Once this is done, place a pressure plate in the block of ground right in front of the door, so that it can be connected without using the Redstone circuits. Do this both inside and outside the door. By doing this, when you pass over the platform, the door will open and close automatically, without you needing to interact on it.

However, I recommend that you be careful because an automatic door placed on the outer wall of a building can allow dangerous creatures to enter, should they approach the door, as they would interact on the pressure plate.

To do this, you can apply a lever on the inner wall of the door, next to the latter. By interacting on the lever, the door will immediately open: at this point, interact on the door to close it.

By doing so, the door will remain locked and will no longer be able to open through the use of the footboards. Only by interacting again on the lever, will the lock on the door be removed, allowing the correct operation of the pressure plates.

Also, in case you want to create an automatic door that stays open during the day and closed during the night, you will need to use a daylight sensor. Its operation is simple: when exposed to direct light, it turns on, activating any mechanism connected to it; during the night, however, it remains off without generating any impulses.

The procedure to follow is to install the daylight sensor in any position outside, so as to always be in direct contact with the daylight, and connect it to the door by means of a Redstone connection. You will simply have to draw a Redstone line between the sensor and the door, to connect them.

Other methods of making an automatic door in Minecraft

In addition to the systems I told you about in the previous chapter to open and close a door automatically in Minecraft, there are other more complex ones, which may require the replacement of the door with passages made up of blocks. One example is the construction of a secret passage, which hides the entrance to a shelter.

In case you are interested in this topic, I suggest you read my guide on how to build a secret passage, in which I explained in detail how to make this project using Redstone and a piston system. For its activation, you can use any mechanism, including the pressure plates or the daylight sensor, which I told you about in the previous chapter.

Furthermore, if you would like more ideas for creating your own personal project for automating the opening and closing of a door, you can consult the many videos available on YouTube made by many Minecraft fans.

To do this, go to the YouTube website  (or start the related app on Android and iOS smartphones and tablets ) and type, in the search bar at the top, the terms Minecraft automatic door or Minecraft automatic door, in English.
