How to install GTA mod

There’s nothing you can do about it – you love Grand Theft Auto (GTA) video games ! You have completed all the missions and objectives in the game, also discovering those secrets hidden from view by the developers. However, you have heard about the possibility of installing mods, that is, the changes that are applied to the installation files of the title to add / change some of its features and broaden the overall gaming experience.

This kind of changes can be applied to the single player mode in full freedom, but you must take care to deactivate them in case you want to access the online game mode, otherwise you risk the ban of your account. Another important thing to know is that the GTA mods (as well as those of many other video games) can only be applied to the computer game versions, as the consoles have a closed system which makes this practice inapplicable.

That said, the purpose of this guide of mine is precisely to explain how to install GTA mods . Are you interested? Are you looking forward to discovering the tips I have prepared for you? Then sit down comfortably and carefully read the procedures that you will find in this tutorial of mine. I wish you a good reading and, above all, a good time!

Install mod on GTA V

If you have purchased GTA V (or GTA 5 ), you can install the mods in a few steps, after having performed the procedures that I will show you in the following paragraphs. Therefore, pay close attention to avoid running into problems.

Preliminary operations

Before starting to install any mod, it is advisable to make a backup copy of the game folder, to avoid having to download and reinstall everything from scratch in case of problems.

The game folder, if you did not change the path during installation, is located in C: \ Program Files \ Rockstar Games \ Grand Theft Auto V ( Rockstar Games version ) or C: \ Program Files \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ Grand Theft Auto V ( Steam version ). Keep these routes in mind, as they will be recalled several times during the course of the guide.

In addition to this, you will need to install some tools to enable changes on GTA V: OpenIV and ScriptHookV : the first tool is used to enable changes on the game’s installation files, while the second is to enable scripts, which have the purpose of add features such as new missions or commands.

OpenIV

OpenIV can be downloaded directly from its official website by pressing the Download now button . After downloading the ovisetup.exe file , double-click on it and run the installation procedure, selecting the English language and pressing the Continue button . Then put a check mark on the I accept the term of this agreement box and finish the setup by pressing the Continue buttons  twice consecutively, Yes and Close .

Arrived at this point, start OpenIV via its icon Quick Start and the main screen, select the item Windows under the heading Grand Theft Auto V . Then press the Browse button to select the GTA V installation folder. If a green message appears, it means that OpenIV can modify the game files. Then click the Continue button two consecutive times and wait for the software to complete processing.

Then start  OpenIV and, on the main screen, click on the Tools > ASI Manager menu items and install ASI Loader and OpenIV.ASI . If you are asked to create a mods folder , you agree.

From the left sidebar, now go to the update folder , click on the update.rtf entry and press the Edit mode button at the top. A red warning message will be displayed: click on Copy to mods folder , in order to transfer a copy of this file to the  previously created mods folder . This is necessary to be able to apply the mods without affecting the game files and risk path accidents that can compromise the installation files.

In addition to the update.rtf file , some mods may require you to modify other files, such as the one named common.rft . Perform the same procedure based on the mod you have chosen to install.

If you want to know how to install mod through this software, I suggest you read the operations I indicated in the next paragraph .

ScriptHookV

If you want to install scripts on GTA V, you need ScriptHookV , which you can download directly from its official website . After reaching the link I provided, click on download to download the ScriptHookV_xxxxxx.zip file . Then extract the contents of the archive ( ScriptHookV.dll and dinput8.dll ) in the installation folder of GTA V and that’s it (if you don’t know how to extract files from an archive, you can read my tutorial dedicated to the topic).

Some scripts may require an add-on called ScriptHookVDotNet , which is used to run scripts compiled in the .NET language . You can download the latest version of this tool from Github.com and extract the ScriptHookVDotNet.asi and ScriptHookVDotNet2.dll files in the GTA V installation folder. Also, manually create a folder named scripts in the main game installation path.

Installation of mod

After following the steps I indicated in the previous paragraphs, it’s time to get into action by installing the mods you prefer. Where to download them from? You can get it from the GTA5-mods.com website (in English) or from the Italian portal GTA-expert.it .

If you want to install a script , after choosing it from those available in the databases that I have provided, click on the Download button and download the compressed archive. To download. completed, open the archive and extract the files to a specific folder depending on the type of script you downloaded: if it is a file with the ASI extension , you must transfer it to the main folder of GTA V; if you find DLL , CS or VB files , they must be copied to the scripts folder , which I told you about in the previous paragraph .

If you want to install a mod that is marked as Add-on , generally you have to follow a procedure that consists in extracting the dlc.rpf file from the downloaded archive in the mods folder , precisely / mods / update / x64 / dlcpacks / <mod name> / . Once this is done, you will need to go to the data folder located in the path / mods / update / update.rpf / common / data / and edit the dlclist.xml file by adding the text string <Item> dlcpacks: \ <mod name> \ < / Item> .

If, on the other hand, nothing is indicated, most likely it is a mod that replaces some characteristics of an object or a vehicle that already exists in the game. What I recommend is to check the description of each mod (including scripts and addons), which includes the detailed installation procedure.

If you want to enter the online mode? You must disable any mods you add. In this case, delete the OpenIV.asi file from the root folder of GTA V. Also remove the files related to ScriptHookV .

Install mods on GTA IV

Installing a mod on GTA IV is a process that requires you to perform some preliminary operations, without which it is not possible to complete the procedure successfully.

Preliminary operations

The first step you need to perform is to make a backup of the game: this can be done by copying the game folder to another location, so as to restore it in case of problems.

The main folder of GTA IV, if you did not change the path during installation, is located in C: \ Program Files \ Rockstar Games \ Grand Theft Auto IV ( Rockstar Games version ) or C: \ Program Files \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ Grand Theft Auto IV \ GTAIV \ ( Steam version ).

Other than that, you need to install some tools to enable changes on GTA IV: OpenIV and Asi Loader . The first tool is for making changes to the game installation files, while the second is for running scripts.

OpenIV

OpenIV is a software that allows you to import mods in PNG, WTD , WDR , WDD and WFT format to GTA IV. You can download it directly from its official website and install it by following the steps I indicated in this paragraph .

After starting OpenIV , select the Windows item under the heading Grand Theft Auto IV and then press the Browse button to search for the GTA IV installation folder. A green message will indicate the correct functioning of OpenIV with the version of the game you have installed. Then click the Continue button two consecutive times and wait for the main screen of the software to load.

For some mods, SparkIV may be required . This is a tool used to recompile the IMG files of the game with the modifications in WTD , WDR , WDD and WFT format of the mods. Unfortunately, however, it is not compatible with the latest version of the game and it may be difficult to use this tool.

If you want to know how to install mods through this software, I suggest you read the steps I indicated in the next paragraph .

Asi Loader

To run scripts on GTA IV, you need Asi Loader , which you can download directly from the official website . After reaching the link I provided, click on Download to download the archive.

Open the IVAsiLoader.rar file and extract the contents of the archive ( dsound.dll ) into the GTA IV installation folder. If you don’t know how to extract files from an archive, you can read my tutorial dedicated to the topic.

You may also need ScriptHook to run scripts compiled with the .NET language. I suggest you download the file from the GTA-expert.it portal and extract the ScriptHookDotNet.asi file and the scripts folder in the main installation path of GTA IV.

Installation of mod

If you have carried out what I indicated in the previous paragraphs to the letter, it is time to install the mods on GTA IV, which you can download from the Italian portal GTA-expert.it .

If you want to install a script , after choosing it from those available in the GTA-expert.it database , press the Download button and download the compressed archive, then open it and, inside it, you will find a TXT file that will indicate the folder where perform file extraction. Usually, for scripts compiled with .NET language, you are asked to extract the files in the scripts folder .

To apply the mods on vehicles or other objects in the game, in general the operation to be performed is to replace the WTD , WDR , WDD or WFT files , present in the compressed archive of the mod with the original ones present within the files Matching IMGs .

For this operation you can use OpenIV : after extracting the files inside the archive, start the program and reach, in the left sidebar, the path pc > models > cdimages . Then open the IMG file required by the mod you downloaded, locate the files to replace and then press the Edit mode button , located at the top.

Then select one of the files to replace and right-click on it, then choosing the Replace item  from the context menu. Finally, replace the file with the corresponding one you extracted and repeat this step for all the files to be replaced.

Install mods on GTA San Andreas

If you own GTA San Andreas , you can apply some mods that have been made for this game. To succeed in the enterprise, follow the procedures indicated in the next paragraphs.

Preliminary operations

First, make a backup of the game installation folder, which you can find in C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Rockstar Games \ Grand Theft Auto San Andreas ( Rockstar Games version ) or C: \ Program Files \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ Grand Theft Auto San Andreas ( Steam version ).

Once this is done, proceed with the download of a tool necessary to install most of the mods for GTA San Andreas: IMG Tool . You can get it from the GTA-expert.it website . After downloading the archive, extract the IMGTool.exe file to your desktop or any folder of your choice. It does not require any installation and I will show you how it works through the procedure indicated in the next paragraph .

Installation of mod

After you’ve done the preliminary steps to perform on GTA San Andreas, it’s time to install the mods. First, go to the GTA-expert.it website to access the mod database for this game.

After finding the one you like best, download it using the appropriate button, so as to take the compressed archive. Within the archive in question you will find some files that may have the extension. FDF or. TXD , just to give an example. Additionally, you may find a TXT file with specific instructions for installing the mod.

Extract all the contents of the archive in any folder on your computer, then open  IMG Tool and select the File > Open items from the top menu, then choosing the IMG file required by the mod (in the models folder present in the main path of GTA San Andreas). Then press the F2 key  on the keyboard to search for the name of the file to be replaced, right-click on it and select the Replace item  from the context menu.

Now you have to select the corresponding file that you extracted previously on your computer. After you have replaced all the files, press on the Commands > Rebuild archive items that you find in the top bar to recompile the file and install the mod. Easy, right?
