How to download books on Kindle
Have you just bought your first Kindle and would like help downloading eBooks on the latter? Are you looking for a way to download books from the Internet and copy them to your Amazon-branded eReader? If that’s the case, don’t worry: you’ve come to the right place, at the right time!
With today’s guide, in fact, we will discover together how to download books on Kindle using all available channels, official and unofficial, supported by the famous Amazon eBook reader. We will therefore see how to make purchases from the Kindle Store, how to download free books from the Internet and transfer them to the Kindle via computer and – perhaps even more interesting – how to make the device “digest” all the books that are distributed in formats not officially supported by the latter.
I assure you that these are really simple operations: start reading and you will immediately realize it. I am sure that, at the end of the guide, you will be able to tell yourself very happy and satisfied with what you have learned about the transfer of books to Kindle. Good fun!

How to download books to Kindle for free
If you want to download books on Kindle and, even better, if you want to download books on Kindle for free, you can first act from your eBook reader, via the Kindle Store.
In case you don’t know, this is the official Amazon store where eBooks destined for Kindles are sold. It hosts titles of all genres, eras and languages with variable prices, but there are also offers of the day with eBooks sold at a discounted price for 24 hours (or more) and various free books.
You can access the Kindle Store directly from your Kindle, as long as it is connected to the Internet and you have logged into your Amazon account on the device. To connect via Wi-Fi, just go to the main menu of the Kindle, press on the three dots located at the top right and go to the Settings> Wireless menu. To log in with your Amazon account, instead, go to the Settings> Your account menu. More details can be found in my tutorial on how Kindle works.
That said, to download books on Kindle Oasis, Kindle Paperwhite or basic Kindle (the procedure is identical), select the shopping cart icon located in the menu located at the top of the main screen of the device and start viewing all the titles available on the Kindle Store, by scrolling through the various sections in evidence attached to the proposed screen or by selecting specific categories from the Browse the categories menu at the top.
If proceeding as I have indicated above you cannot find books that interest you, you can search by keyword, typing the keywords of your interest in the Search field at the top.
Once you have found an eBook that you think you might like, first select on its cover image, in order to view the complete card with the synopsis and user comments, and then on the Get it for a free button (in the case of free content) or on the Buy button. for [price] (in the case of paid content) to download it to your Kindle. The eBook will be downloaded immediately and you can start reading it within seconds by selecting it from the device’s home menu.
Please note that for paid books the option Send extract now is also available, which allows you to download a free extract of the eBook in order to evaluate its contents before purchase.
I also point out that you are an Amazon Prime customer, you have access to Amazon Prime Reading, a dedicated section of the Kindle Store where there are hundreds of eBooks and comics (in Italian, but not only) to download for free. So, if the work you have selected in the Kindle Store is included in the Amazon Prime Reading catalog, you can download it by pressing the Read now button. Instead, to view the complete list of titles available in Amazon Prime Reading, select the appropriate item from the main page of the Kindle Store.
I point out that Amazon has also launched a service, called Kindle Unlimited, which allows you to freely access more than 30,000 titles in Italian and over 1 million titles in other languages by paying 9.99 euros/month, but the first month. subscription is free for new users. How to Download Kindle Books from Amazon
If you do not have your Kindle device at hand, you can download books to Kindle from Amazon, acting as a computer, through the website of the e-commerce giant. How you do it? I’ll explain it to you right away, it’s child’s play!
To begin with, open the browser you usually use to surf the Net from your PC (eg Chrome ), go to the home page of the web version of the Kindle Store and log in to your Amazon account (if necessary), by clicking on the Hello, Login item located at the top right and filling in the text fields displayed with the required data.
Next, start exploring the catalog of available books, exploring the selections highlighted on the main page, selecting the links to the various sections found in the top menu or using the items in the left sidebar to choose a specific genre, a certain author and to apply other filters useful to refine the visualization of the contents.
As well as I have just shown you, you can view specific eBooks available on the Kindle Store going to perform a keyword search by typing the keyword you are interested in the text field at the top and then clicking on the button with the magnifying glass you located on the right.
When you find an eBook that you think you might be interested in, click on its cover image, then make sure that the Kindle Format option is selected in the worksheet (otherwise you can do it yourself), that in the Send to the drop-down menu on the right there is the name of your Kindle (if not, always do it yourself) and click the 1-click Buy Now button to send the book to your Kindle. EBooks will be automatically downloaded to your device as soon as it is connected to the Internet.
Don’t want to buy the book, just download a free excerpt? Then click on the Send a free sample button that you always find on the right and your Kindle will receive a “taste” of 1 or 2 chapters of the selected work.
How to download Kindle books on PC
Now let’s see how to download Kindle books on PC, then how to use the Kindle application made officially available for Windows and macOS to read eBooks from a computer and what other systems you can possibly consider adopting to access content on Kindle from PC or add some of new ones. Find everything explained in detail below.
With Kindle application
If you want to download books to Kindle from a computer, you can first use the Kindle application made available by Amazon for Windows and macOS. Thanks to it it is possible to read the eBooks in the Kindle library directly from a computer, without necessarily having to use the “real” eBook reader. Unfortunately, you cannot download new content, so to access those of your interest you need to intervene in advance from Kindle or from the Web.
To download the Kindle application to your computer, go to its web page and click the Download button for PC & Mac. Eventually, the application is also on the Microsoft Store in a specific version for Windows 10 and on the Mac App Store for macOS.
At the end of the download, if you are using Windows, open the .exe file obtained, wait for the installation procedure to be completed and click on the Finish button in the window that appears on the desktop. Then, launch the program by selecting its shortcut added to the Start menu.
If you are using macOS, on the other hand, open the .dmg package obtained and drag the program icon into the Applications folder on your computer, then right-click on it, select the Open item from the menu that appears and press the Open button, in order to start the application and therefore being able to download Kindle books on Mac, however, going around the limitations imposed by Apple on non-certified developers (an operation that must be carried out only at the first start).
Now that you see the main screen of the application, first log in to your Amazon account, after which you will find yourself in the presence of your library and you can open the books already downloaded on your Kindle by clicking on their cover. If necessary, you can also carry out a targeted search by typing the keywords of your interest in the text field at the top right.
Other solutions
Have you downloaded eBooks from sources other than the Kindle Store, as in the case of the sites that I pointed out in my guide on how to download eBooks for free, and would like to understand how to transfer them to your Kindle device? Would you like to move digital books stored on your Kindle to your computer’s hard drive? I’ll explain immediately how you can do it. You will find reported below various useful solutions for the purpose that you can decide to implement.
- File Explorer and Finder– if you want to transfer the books of your interest from your computer to your Kindle or if you want to do the reverse procedure, all without using any program, I inform you that you can do this by connecting the eBook reader to the PC with the relative USB cable and copying or by moving the files to the Documents or Internal documents folder of the device, which you can access by proceeding as follows: if you use Windows, open the File Explorer by selecting the relative icon (the one with the yellow folder ) located on the taskbar select the item This PC from the left sidebar and double click on the kindle icon; if you use macOS, open the Finder by selecting its icon (the one with the smiley face ) that you find on the Dock bar and select the device name from the sidebar of the window that appears.
- Caliber– Kindle devices can only read MOBI, AZW, PDF, DOC / DOCX, RTF, and TXT files. EPubs, which are used on most eBook readers of other brands. However, if you are dealing with files of this type, you can convert them to Mobi or AZW in a very simple way, by turning to the free Caliber program, which is available for Windows, macOS and Linux and allows you to convert all major ebook formats together. (as well as to read and manage them in an extremely intuitive way). To use it, download, install and configure the program as I explained to you in my guide on the subject, then drag the eBooks that you want to make compatible with the Kindle and that you want to transfer to the device on the main screen of Caliber, select them in the latter and click on the Convert books button located at the top left. In the window that opens, select the AZW3 format or the Mobi format from the Output formats drop-down menu located at the top right and start the conversion of the books by clicking on the OK button. At the end of the operation, select from the main Caliber screen all the books you want to transfer to the Kindle, connect the device to the computer and start the transfer by clicking on the Send to device button placed at the top. Instead, if you want to view the list of books on the eBook reader, click on the Device button that appears at the top, while to read a book directly from your computer just double-click on its title.
- Email– if you are bothered by the idea of connecting your Kindle to your computer every time you want to copy an eBook to it, activate the function for sending documents to the device via email. To do this, connected to this Web page, click on the Preferences tab at the top, on the Personal document settings item and then on the Add a new approved e-mail address located at the bottom of the page. At this point, type the email address that you find next to the device name in the Destination Kindle email settings section and press the Add an address Later, you can send the eBooks you want to transfer to your Kindle as eBooks email attachments, by writing to the address specified above.
How to download books on the Kindle app
In conclusion, I point out that you can also download books on the Kindle app, or using the official app for smartphones and tablets, made available by Amazon and work both on Android and on iOS / iPadOS. Thanks to it, you can read all Kindle books directly on the move, without necessarily having to use the eBook reader of the e-commerce giant.
To download and install the Kindle app, if you are using Android, visit the relevant section of the Play Store and tap the Install button (if you are using a device on which there is no Play Store, you can download the app from the store alternatives ). If you are using iOS / iPadOS, visit the relevant section of the App Store instead, tap the Get button, then the Install button and authorize the download via Face ID, Touch ID or Apple ID password.
Then, start the app by selecting its icon that has just been added on the home screen, then log in to your Amazon account to be able to start serving. At this point, scroll through the contents in the Home section in search of those of your interest or select the item Discover which is located at the bottom to go to the relevant section, to explore the various categories available and to carry out a direct search through the appropriate bar.
The Shop section, available only in the Android app, allows you to browse the entire Kindle store and purchase books directly from the app. When you find a content that you think may interest you, then tap on its cover and then press the Send a free sample button, to receive an extract on your device, or on the purchase/download device, to download it.
Unfortunately, you cannot make purchases via the iPhone and iPad app, but you can possibly download Kindle books on iPhone and download Kindle books on iPad via Prime Reading and Kindle Unlimited, by tapping the relative Read Now button (to start reading immediately ), or Add to Library (to add the title to the library and read it later).
If you then want to access the eBooks already in your library from mobile, you can do so by tapping on the Library item at the bottom and selecting the cover of the book of your interest. Easier than that?
