Preliminary information
As you will soon discover, changing your SPID identity data is not a difficult operation; to succeed in the enterprise, it is in fact sufficient to have a computer, a smartphone or a tablet, together with an Internet connection and the access credentials of the digital identity to be “retouched”. If you no longer remember your login details, you can quickly retrieve them, following the instructions I gave you in my guide on how to recover SPID credentials.
Keep in mind, however, that some certification bodies may exclude the modification of specific data, such as the e-mail address used to access the digital identity, or the telephone number on which communications and OTP codes are received, without the intervention of a human operator: this is a security measure provided for the protection of the person and the data connected to it.
It may also happen that the use of SPID credentials may be temporarily suspended, in order to verify the correctness of the new data entered: however, this is a rather rare eventuality, generally limited to just the modification of the identification document.
How to change the SPID data
Having made the necessary clarifications, the time has come to take action and to explain, in practice, how to change the SPID data. Generally speaking, these are the steps to take in order to succeed in the business.
- Open the website of the certification body with which you obtained your SPID identity, choose you want to access the SPID identity and, when prompted, enter the username and password associated with your account. Subsequently, pass authentication level 2 by verifying your identity through a dedicated app or by entering the OTP code received via SMS.
- Enter the management page of your profile or personal data.
- Click on the button to change your personal data and make the changes you need. Please note that if you want to change the mobile number or the email address associated with SPID, you may need to verify the correctness of the new data by entering a disposable code.
- Save the changes made by pressing the appropriate button and, if necessary, pass the second authentication factor again, as an additional security measure.
In rare cases, the certifying body could choose to temporarily suspend the use of SPID, until the correctness of the new data entered is verified (this usually happens when you try to change your identification document).
Unfortunately, it is not possible for me to explain the specific procedure for your case, as each identity provider has its own data modification (and verification) system; however, as a concrete example, let me give you some practical examples.
How to change the SPID data: Poste
For example, if you have activated a SPID identity at Poste Italiane, you can proceed with the modification of the data (or, at least, those allowed) in total autonomy, via the Internet. The operation can be carried out from any browser for computers, smartphones and tablets.
If you use a PC, first connect to the SPID-enabled PosteID website, click on the Login button and enter the email and password associated with your digital identity, then click on the Login button and confirm the second authentication factor, with the methods provided by your account.
For example, if SPID security level 2 is associated with the PosteID app, click on the Continue button, tap on the notification from the app in question received on the smartphone or tablet you used to configure it and enter your PosteID code in the appropriate field (or proceed with biometric authentication, if you have activated it), to access SPID. If you no longer remember your personal code, you can reset it by following the instructions I gave you in this guide.
If, on the other hand, you do not have the device associated with PosteID with you, after entering your username and password on the Post Office website, click on the link Login via SMS code, then on the Continue with SMS button and enter, in the appropriate field, the code that should be delivered to you within a few moments via SMS. To complete the login, click the Continue button.
Once logged in, if you intend to change the certified email associated with the SPID, click on the tab Your SPID profile (at the top) or on the arrow symbol corresponding to the entry of the same name and click on the link Change your username, to view the data editing screen.
Now, if it is your intention to change your main email address and, consequently, the username of the SPID identity, click on the email address box to enable the change, specify the new email in the appropriate text fields and click on the button Continue.
Finally, enter the OTP code that should have been delivered to the new e-mail address and click on the Confirm button to apply the change. From this moment on, you will be able to log in to the SPID identity using the new email (together with the password and the PosteID code already in use).
If, on the other hand, you need to change all the other data, click on the > symbol located under the heading Your data, click on the field you want to change (eg. Type of document ) and enter the necessary information in the appropriate fields. Once you have applied the necessary changes, click on the Save button located below and that’s it.
The procedure to be carried out to change the telephone number associated with SPID is slightly different: after clicking on the Certified mobile number field, choose whether to use a telephone number certified by Poste Italiane or another number, placing the checkmark next to ‘specific item; in the latter case, you will have to enter the mobile number to use, twice in a row.
Once the new phone number has been specified, click on the Confirm button, enter the OTP code that you should have received via SMS and click on the Confirm button again, to associate your new phone number with PosteID. For more information on changing the mobile phone number, I refer you to reading the specific guide I have dedicated to the topic.
Note: at the time of writing, Poste Italiane does not allow you to change the certified e-mail address and mobile number at the same time.
On smartphones and tablets, things work in much the same way: all you have to do is open the browser you usually use and follow the same instructions you have just seen for your computer; the only difference, in this case, is the position of the buttons and menu items.
If you encounter any problems in completing the procedure, I suggest you get in touch directly with Poste Italiane, by calling the dedicated number 800.007.777: the call is free and the service is available from Monday to Saturday, from 08:00 to 20:00.
Alternatively, you can use one of the other contact channels available (I told you about it in this guide ), or go in person to a post office and explain to the counter clerk what the problem you are having is.
