How to ask for a refund on Steam

After thinking about it for a long time, you have decided to buy the new chapter of your favorite video game on Steam . Once you have completed the download and installation of the latter, you immediately started playing to discover the main news and, above all, test its playability. Unfortunately, however, from the first minutes of gameplay, you regretted your purchase, preferring by far the previous versions of the title. For this reason, you would like to know if it is possible to retrace your steps and cancel the purchase. I guessed it, right? If so, let me tell you that the answer to your question is yes and that you have come to the right place at the right time.

With today’s guide, in fact, I will explain how to request a refund on Steam and what are the requirements to be able to send this request. First of all, I will show you the detailed procedure for requesting a refund for a product purchased on the famous platform developed by Valve from a computer, after which it will be my task to show you the steps to follow to submit your request using the Steam application for smartphones and Tablet. How do you say? Is that exactly what you wanted to know? Then don’t delay and get deeper into the topic right away.

Preliminary information

Before going into the details of this guide and showing you the detailed procedure for requesting a refund on Steam , it may be useful to know what are the times and requirements to perform this operation.

On Steam, you can request a refund for almost all types of purchases and for any reason, as long as the request is sent within 14 days of purchase and having used the game for less than two hours. However, you can submit your refund request even if you do not meet the aforementioned conditions: in this case, your application will be analyzed and evaluated by Steam support who may decide to refund you.

If your request is accepted, you will receive your refund within one week of approval and the amount will be credited to your Steam account or payment method used to make the purchase. Finally, you should know that it is not possible to request a refund for purchases made outside the Steam store. For example, you cannot request a refund for games added on Steam and purchased on Instant Gaming or similar services.

For hardware purchases (eg Steam controller or Steam Link ), you can request a refund within 30 days of delivery and you will need to return the item within 14 days after requesting a refund by following the directions provided by Steam support.

Request a refund on Steam from your computer

To request a refund on Steam, start the latter making sure you are logged into your account online. If you have not set up automatic login, enter your account details in the Account Name and Password fields and click the Login button .

Now, choose the Library option present in the main menu, select the game or software for which you want to request a refund, by clicking on its name in the sidebar on the left and, in the Links section on the right, choose the Support option .

Alternatively, click on the Help item in the top menu, choose the Steam Assistance option from the menu that appears and click on the product of your interest visible in the Recent Products list . If the latter is not present, select the Games, software etc. item . to view the complete list of games and software purchased.

By choosing, instead, the Steam Hardware option and selecting the option of your interest ( Steam Controller , Steam Link , Steam VR etc.) you can access the section for requesting a refund for hardware products.

Now, on the main screen of the chosen product, to request a refund, select the reason for your request by choosing one of the available options: for example, if you are requesting a refund for a game, choose one of the options from Not compatible with my system operational , if you cannot install the product you purchased due to incompatibility with your computer, or Technical or game problem , if you have encountered another type of problem.

In the latter case, select one of the available items between  I cannot download or install the game , The game does not start when I try to start it , The game stops running while I am playing , The game does not work well and I have another problem and Click the I would like to request a refund option .

If your request meets the refund terms (the product was recently purchased and has not been used for more than two hours in the case of video games and software), click on the item Select the refund method and indicate where to receive the refund by selecting one of the options between PayPal Refund  (available only if you paid with PayPal), Credit Card Refund  (only available if you paid by credit card) and Steam Wallet Refund .

Then specify the reason for your request again via the drop-down menu Tell us the reason by selecting one of the available options ( I bought it by mistake , It does not start , It runs too slow , It is not fun , The game is too difficult , The multiplayer does not work etc.) and if you wish, enter additional comments in the Notes field .

Finally, press the Send request button to send your refund request: within a few moments, you will receive a confirmation email to the email address associated with your Steam account that will inform you of the request. If the latter is accepted, you will receive your refund within one week. To learn more and learn more about how Steam works, I leave you to my guide dedicated to the subject .

If Steam is not installed on the computer you are using to request the refund, it will be useful to know that you can also proceed from a browser by connecting to the official website of the platform developed by Valve . Then click on the Login button at the top right, enter your account details in the Steam Account Name and Password fields  and press the Login button to log into your account.

In the new window, click on the item Support in the upper right, click on the item games, software etc . o Steam Hardware and select the product for which you want to request a refund, then specify the reason for your request by selecting one of the options (eg  It is not compatible with my operating system ,  Technical problem or game, etc.), specify the problem found and click on the item I would like to request a refund .

Then select the refund method ( PayPal , credit card or Steam wallet ), choose one of the options available in the Tell us a reason box and press the Send request button to submit your refund request.

Request a refund on Steam from smartphones and tablets

It will be useful to know that it is also possible to request a refund on Steam from smartphones and tablets , by downloading the Steam application for Android and iOS devices . The procedure is almost the same as described above for computers.

First, start the Steam app by tapping on its icon on the home screen of your device (if you haven’t downloaded it yet, my guide on how to download Steam may be useful ), enter your account details in the Steam Username and Password fields and press the Login button to log in to Steam. Pigia, then, on the ≡ button  at the top left, choose the item Assistance and, in the new screen displayed, tap on the product you want to request a refund.

If the latter is not visible in recent products , you tap one of the options available including  games, software, etc. . and Steam Hardware , depending on the product you are requesting a refund for. In the screen relating to the game or the selected item, then locate the item What is the problem with this product? and specify the problem encountered by choosing one of the available options.

For example, if you are requesting a refund for a game, tap on one of the items between It is not compatible with my operating system and  Technical or game problem and, in the latter case, further specify the problem encountered by choosing one of the options available between I cannot download or install the game , The game does not start when I try to start it , The game stops working while I am playing , The game does not work well and I have another problem , then choose the item Contact game support to try to resolve your issues or I would like to ask for a refund to submit your refund request.

Now, select the refund method of your interest between PayPal , credit card or Steam wallet by pressing on the item Select the refund method , indicate again the reason for your request by selecting one of the available options ( Does not start , Closes continuously , The game is too difficult , It is not fun , The game is different from how it is shown in the video and promotional images etc.) in the box Tell us a reason and enter any additional comments in the Notes field. To send the refund request, press the Send request button and that’s it.
