Are you a video game lover and are you looking for the next title that can make you live a thousand adrenaline-fueled adventures? From the moment you are reading this guide dedicated to free war games , I imagine that your videogame tastes lean towards titles of this genre and maybe you would like some advice on which to play at no cost.

If this is the case, you will be happy to know that I can give you several tips on how to download war games for free on computers, smartphones and tablets. For example, on computers there is the Steam gaming platform , which has a well-stocked catalog. For smartphones and tablets, however, I want to explain how to download war games at no cost through the Android Play Store and the iOS App Store . I also know some Internet sites that allow you to play online, without having to download programs or apps.

Free war games for PC

If you like war games and would like to be able to download them for free on your computer, I recommend downloading the Steam client  , the famous free gaming platform developed by the well-known software house Valve, available for both Windows and macOS.

In the following lines, I will show you, therefore, in detail how to download and install Steam, how to create a free account and, finally, how to find and install free war games.

Furthermore, you should know that, to download war games for free on your computer, you can also use the Microsoft Store  of Windows 10 and the Mac App Store of macOS: I will provide you with more details on this in the next chapters.

Steam

To play the free war games distributed on Steam you must first download the program client on Windows and macOS , in order to take advantage of the famous digital distribution service created by Valve.

To do this, connect to the Steam website and first press the Install Steam button located at the top right and then  click Install Steam now . On Windows , when the download is complete, double-click on it to open the SteamSetup.exe file   you just downloaded and click first on  Yes  in the user account control window and then on  Next .

Apponi, so the check mark next to the language Italian and press on Next . Then complete the setup by first clicking on  Install  and then on  Finish .

Now wait just a few minutes for all the components necessary to run the client to be downloaded from the Internet and create your free account on Steam by pressing the  Create a new account button .

The registration form will then be shown on the screen, in which you will have to indicate all the information required to create an account, such as email address and country of residence . After accepting the terms and conditions of the service that are proposed to you, then click on the Continue button . If you have any doubts or problems, please refer to my tutorial on how to download Steam .

Do you use a  Mac ? Then you have to follow an even simpler procedure: open the dmg package  downloaded from the Steam website and click on Agree . Once this is done, on the screen that is shown to you, drag the program icon to the macOS Applications folder  .

Then start the software by clicking on its icon in the Launchpad , wait for all the components necessary to run the client to be downloaded from the Internet and create your free account by clicking on  Create a new account and then proceeding as previously indicated.

Once you have completed the installation of the Steam client on Windows or macOS, you can locate the war games to download for free through the same. Doing so is simple: click on the category Free to play is located in the menu bar at the top and then press the item Free-to-play .

Then filter by category ( Label ) if necessary, by clicking on one of the items located on the right of the screen. For example, click on Action or Massively Multiplayer , in order to find the video game of your interest corresponding to this category more quickly.

If you have found the title you want to download, click on its name and then click on Start game . Then, to install it, click Next and Accept .

Below, however, you can find some advice on what are the most famous free-to-play war video games available for download via Steam.

• Dirty Bomb(Windows) – not a war title in the strict sense of the word, but it is one of the best FPS online and definitely worth a try. Dirty Bomb is set in 2020 in a London devastated by the explosion of a “dirty bomb”, that is a radiological weapon. The protagonists of the videogame are mercenaries who have to fight against enemy factions to conquer portions of the city and make them fall under their own dominion. The game can count on the right balance between tactics and frenzy and a well-structured system of collaboration between users.
• Heroes & Generals(Windows) – is a great strategic online FPS set during the Second World War. It allows you to take on the role of the “heroes” who fight in the trenches, drive planes and tanks or those of the “generals” who set up combat strategies.
• Warface(Windows) – a first person view war shooter. In the online cooperative mode it offers new missions every day and allows you to choose between four character classes: rifleman, sniper, engineer or doctor, each with different tasks and peculiarities. Game modes available include “Team Deathmatch”, “Free for All”, “Plant the Bomb”, “Storm”, “Destruction” and “Capture”.
• War Thunder(Windows / macOS) – is a great free-to-play title set in World War II that puts the player in charge of armored vehicles, such as tanks and ships. It offers tons of settings to customize the gaming experience. It also supports single player game mode.
• PlanetSide 2(Windows) – another amazing multiplayer FPS set in the future. It offers four massive maps where players can clash with each other and engage in battles of epic proportions. Includes several game modes and a high level of soldier customization.
• Blacklight: Retribution(Windows) – Multiplayer FPS with a futuristic setting in which HRV (Hyper Reality Vision) technologies and weapon customization play a fundamental role. It also features a 4-player co-op mode.
• Warframe (Windows) – is another popular multiplayer action title with third person view. It is set in a science fiction world where the Grineer army is spreading throughout the solar system. To stop their advance, the old Tenno warriors, blade and rifle warriors, are called: masters of Warframe armor. Plot aside, we are talking about a frenetic and tactical title at the right point; definitely worth trying.
• Team Fortress 2(Windows / macOS / Linux) – it is not a real war game: it is rather a strategic FPS in which you can choose between various character classes and various game modes, such as “Arena “And” Capture the flag “. Made by Valve, it is one of the most downloaded titles on Steam.

Microsoft Store

If you have a computer with Windows 10 operating system  , you can also download war games for free through the Microsoft Store, as there are some titles inside that they think may interest you.

To locate and download titles belonging to this type, first start the Microsoft Store via the Cortana search bar. Once this is done, click on the Games menu item located at the top and then press on the Show all item , corresponding to the category Most popular free games .

Filter your search now using the Category drop-down menu , in order to select items such as Arena for multiplayer online combat , Action and Adventure or Shooter . Once you have identified the title of your interest, click on it and install it by pressing the Get / Install button . Once the download is complete, start the game by pressing Start .

Below I give you some examples of the most popular war video games that are present in the Microsoft Store.

• Sniper Fury– is a free game in which you have to take on the role of a sniper and undertake more than 500 missions to defeat enemies in war. It is also possible to compete with players, thanks to the presence of a PVP mode.
• Word of Warships– is one of the most famous free war games in which you have to fight for naval supremacy, putting yourself in command of historical ships to defeat your opponents.
• Modern Combat 5– is a free competitive shooter and therefore consists of PVP battles between players in limited game maps. You can also play his single player campaign for free.

Mac App Store

If you have a Mac , you can use the Mac App Store  to download free war games. To use it, start it (by pressing on its icon, that is the symbol of a stylized “A” ). Then, on the main screen, click on the Categories  >  Games items .

At this point, scroll down the screen that is shown to you, locate the Free Top category and press on the Complete List item . You will then be shown a list of free video games and you can browse it to find the title that best matches your gaming tastes.

Once you have identified the title of your interest, download it by clicking on the Get button  located next to its icon and confirm the procedure by pressing the Install button .

Below I give you some examples of the most famous free war games downloadable through the Mac App Store.

• Code Of War– is an excellent shooter with 3D graphics and realistic physics in which you have to test yourself against other players in multiplayer maps.
• World of Tanks Blitz – In this popular multiplayer online game you can face opponents in numerous battlefields with WWII weapons and vehicles.
• Contract Killer 2 – is a free war game in which you take on the role of Jack Griffin, a deadly assassin, as well as a skilled sniper.

Free war games for smartphones and tablets

Do you prefer to play on the go, on smartphones and tablets? No problem. Through the Android Play Store or the iOS App Store , you can download various war video games for free at no cost.

To do this, if you have an Android smartphone or tablet , first start the Android Play Store by pressing on its icon located on the home screen (the icon of a colored triangle ).

Once started, tap on the Games menu item located at the top, then tap on the categories item and on the one called action, so you can easily locate the titles of this genre in the Android Play Store.

For example, you can browse the sections of the games Recommended for you , of the most voted games or of the role-playing games , by tapping on the Other item in correspondence with the related subcategories.

Once you have identified the game you are interested in downloading, tap on its icon and install it by pressing the Install / Accept button . When the automatic download is complete, start it by pressing the Open button .

On the iPhone or iPad , on the other hand, start the iOS App Store by tapping on its icon located on the home screen (the symbol of a stylized white “A” on a blue background). Once this is done, press on the Games item located at the bottom and identify the game of your interest, by tapping on one of the categories present (for example, you can tap on the Free Top or Action item , corresponding to the Top categories item ).

If you have found the game you are interested in installing, tap on its icon, then click on Get / Install . Now, to start the automatic download and installation, use Face ID, Touch ID or enter your iCloud account password.

In the following lines, I give you some examples of what are currently the best free war games that you can download on smartphones and tablets.

• Fortnite– is one of the video games of the moment, which is available for free in its “Battle Royale ” mode and which includes PVP clashes between players in last man standing mode. On Android it can be downloaded through its official website while on iOS it is available directly from the App Store . I gave you more information about it in my tutorial dedicated to the topic. The title is also available on PC and consoles.
• Modern Combat 5– is one of the best war FPS in mobile. It has extremely captivating 3D graphics and includes various game modes (escort, destroy, helicopter, chase on a 4 × 4) in both single and multiplayer. It is available for free for Android  and  iOS .
• Frontline Commando– is an excellent 3D shooter with a third person view that provides a fast-paced gameplay and a large number of weapons at the player’s disposal. It’s free for Android and iOS .
• Major Mayhem– a shooter with cartoonish graphics in which you have to shoot enemies by “tapping” them while the hero of the game runs through the levels. It offers fast-paced and well-balanced gameplay. It’s free for Android and iOS .
• Brothers In Arms 3 –is another war-themed first-person shooter from Gameloft that is definitely worth a try. Free-to-play for Android .
• Battle Nations– is a great strategic warfare title to play online, free-to-play with extra items that can be purchased in-game. It is available for Android and iOS .
• NOVA Legacy– It is an online multiplayer FPS set in the future with very fast-paced gameplay. It is free and available on Android and iOS .

Free console war games

Do you have a console and would like to download free war games on it? No problem. To do this, first make sure that the console has been previously connected to the Internet by going through the settings menu ( Settings> Network> Set up Internet connection  on PS4 and  Network> Network settings> Configure wireless network on Xbox One).

If in doubt, refer to the directions I gave you in my guide on  how to play PS4 online  or those on  how to connect to Xbox Live  for  Xbox .

Once this is done, go to the default virtual store of your console, that is the PlayStation Store for PlayStation and the Microsoft Store for Xbox and locate, through the same, the free war games that you are interested in downloading.

For example, if you have an Xbox console, once you have launched the Microsoft Store  via its icon located on the main screen, refer to the Games tab and the Most popular games for free section to find the title you are interested in downloading.

• War Thunder( PS4 / Xbox One ) – is a popular free-to-play military MMO in which you can fight with WWII and Cold War aircraft, armored vehicles and naval vehicles.
• Armored Warfare( PS4 / Xbox One ) – is another fighting video game where you face each other in PVP battles with the support of a wide range of war machines.
• Warface( PS4 / Xbox One ) – is a first-person shooter with modern settings in which players face off in PVP mode on numerous game maps. It also features a PvE campaign.

Free online war games

If you do not want or cannot download and install software on your computer, you can play free war games online by connecting to one of the numerous websites that contain them and therefore allow you to use them directly from your browser.

In this regard, in case of problems, be sure to use a program for surfing the Internet with Flash Player integrated “as standard”, such as Google Chrome . If, on the other hand, you want to use a different browser, make sure you have previously downloaded and activated the Flash Player plugin.

Among these, there is for example the Poki website , which allows you to play a huge number of free video games via browser. To use it, connect to its home page via this link . Then click on the icon of the title to play and wait for it to load, which will be played directly in the browser you are using.

Another website you can refer to is Giochidiguerra.it , which also allows you to play various single player and multiplayer titles directly through your browser. To use it, connect to its home page via the link indicated and choose one of the categories of video games in the top bar ( warplanes, warships, tanks, fighters, military strategy, aim and destroy and combat ). To start playing a video game, click on it and, on the next screen, press the Play button .

Rich in war video games is also the Pomu.co web portal : on the latter, once you have connected to its main page, click on the Action menu item , so that you can locate and click on the title more in line with your gaming tastes. The selected game will be launched directly in the browser.

Even  Flashgames247  is worth a look. It is another “generalist” site of flash games and, in its War  and  Shooting sections  , you will certainly find many interesting titles with a war background. Good fun!
