How to find passwords saved on Chrome
Seeing the passwords saved on Chrome is really a breeze both from a computer and from smartphones and tablets: here’s how to do it on all major operating systems.
How to see the passwords saved on Chrome from a computer
Do you use Chrome on a computer and would you therefore be interested in knowing how to see the passwords saved in the latter on Windows, macOS or Linux? No problem, I’ll tell you right away.
First, start Chrome and click on the ⁝ icon in the upper right part of the window and choose the Settings item from the menu that opens. If you are operating on a computer that is not yours, or in any case you have installed a new copy of Chrome and you want to recover your passwords, you must log in to your Google account by pressing the appropriate profile photo located at the top right of the browser window and by entering your account credentials. Clearly, this is true if you have chosen to sync passwords to the Google cloud from your other devices that you use Chrome on.
Make sure, anger, that the You and Google tab is shown (if not, click on it that you find in the list on the left) and proceed by clicking on the Password item. At this point, you can therefore view all the access keys saved in the browser and manage them as needed. The latter will be shown to you under the item Saved passwords. You will find the referring website under the Website column, the username under that Username and the passwords under that Password.
However, keep in mind that the various passwords are covered by the “dots”; in order to view them you must therefore press the button with the eye next to each of them, on the right. Then you will be asked to indicate the name of your user account on the computer and the password associated with it (subsequently, to hide the password again, press the crossed eye icon ).
By clicking, instead, on the sull’icona icon next to each password you can access a menu through which you can copy, change or remove the chosen password (just click on the appropriate items in the aforementioned menu). And if you have saved a lot of passwords and you can’t find the ones you are interested in immediately, you can help by using the search field at the top right, by typing in the name of the Internet site you are interested in viewing the access data.
At the bottom of the page, under the heading Never saved, you will find the Internet sites for which you have requested that the access data never be stored. Just press the “X” next to the name of each site to permanently remove the link to the sites in question. I also point out that, again from the same Chrome settings page, you can choose whether to allow the browser to ask you to save passwords or not and whether or not to enable automatic access, simply by leaving ON or by turning OFF the switches that are up.
That’s all. Before proceeding further, however, I would like to point out that several third-party programs are also available on the Net that allow you to view the passwords stored on Chrome and other browsers, some safe and that really work, others scammers, so you must always pay close attention to what you download.
In this case, one of the safest and most used software is ChromePass, available only on Windows, which can be downloaded for free from this page. I have told you in depth about this and other similar solutions in this tutorial of mine.
How to see the passwords saved on Chrome from smartphones and tablets
If you are interested in seeing the passwords saved on Chrome from your Android smartphone or tablet or from your iPhone / iPad, proceed by starting the Google browser by tapping on its icon that you can find on the home screen, in the app menu.
Once the Chrome screen is displayed, press the ⁝ icon located at the top right and select the Settings item from the menu that opens. Now, if you are using a device that is not yours or you have just installed Chrome, you must log in to your Google account by pressing on the appropriate item and entering your account credentials. Of course this only applies if you had cloud password sync enabled on the other devices you use Chrome on.
Well: now press on the Password item that you find in the Basic Settings section. You will then see the complete list of all the access data you have saved on the web browser, in the Passwords (on Android) or Saved passwords (on iOS / iPadOS) section.
Pressing on the name of the service you are interested in will open a new screen indicating the complete URL of the reference portal, the username and password covered by the dots: to view it, press the eye icon and type the unlock code of the your device (in the case of devices that support it, you can also use the fingerprint or facial recognition ). To hide the displayed password again, press the crossed eye icon.
If, in addition to viewing the password, you want to copy it to the clipboard of the device, tap on the rectangle icon next to that of the eye, type the device unlock code and that’s it. To delete the password, press the trash can icon located at the top instead. Nothing complex, right?
Please also note that from the main screen for managing passwords on Chrome you can also choose whether to enable password saving and/or automatic access (only on Android) by turning the relative switches ON or OFF. From there you can also export all saved passwords by clicking on the appropriate item (only on iOS) at the bottom.
See synced passwords
As I explained to you before (and, even better, in my tutorial on how to store passwords on Google Chrome ), by associating Chrome with a specific Google account, it is possible to store passwords online on Google’s servers. The latter, in this way, are synchronized on all devices accessed with the same Google account; all in a safe and fast way.
To view (and manage) the passwords stored online, connected to this web page, log in to your Google account by filling in the appropriate fields on the screen (if necessary) and click on the name of the site relating to the password you want to view. Provide, then, to enter the password of your Google account and press the Next button.
At this point, to view the password you are interested in, press the eye icon at the bottom. You can also change or delete the password in question by pressing the appropriate buttons at the bottom.
If you don’t care about the sync feature, you can disable it at any time. To do this (from a computer ) press the ⁝ icon located in the upper right part of the same and then press the Settings item. From here, click on the item Manage the data to be synchronized and then click on the item Customize synchronization on the next screen. Finally, turn OFF the lever of the switch located in correspondence with the Password item. That’s all!
To repeat the above steps on a smartphone or tablet, start Chrome and press the ⁝ icon located at the top right. From here, go to Settings> Synchronization and move the lever of the switch related to the Synchronize all items to OFF. Finally, click on the box next to Password, to remove the check from it, and that’s it.
How to find unsaved passwords on Chrome
How do you say? Would you also like to take a look at the passwords you haven’t saved on Google Chrome? In this case, you need to check in your operating system settings or other browsers, as explained in my tutorial on how to see saved passwords.
In the future, to avoid “disseminating” passwords among various browsers, I strongly recommend that you have a password manager, that is a program that allows you to store and manage your access keys by remembering a single master password. I propose below the solutions that I consider most valid and reliable.
- 1Password( Windows / macOS / Linux / Android / iOS / iPadOS ) – One of the best password managers available for different operating systems. The program is available as a free trial for 14 days (after which you can decide whether to upgrade to the paid version with various subscription solutions starting at $ 2.99 per month). It allows you to save access data to websites and credit card data by synchronizing them on all your devices and can be integrated into all major navigation browsers.
- KeePass( Multi ) – an excellent free and open source program available for all operating systems (however, on some of them, such as Android and iOS, alternative versions based on the same code are available). This is a solution suitable for more experienced users as it offers various manual configurations. Furthermore, the program does not automatically synchronize passwords with the cloud (to do this you need to proceed manually by relying on external cloud storage services ).
- NordPass( Windows / macOS / Linux / Android / iOS / iPadOS ) – another handy and valid password manager developed by NordVPN programmers . It allows you to store passwords, credit card data, software license codes and sensitive information. The program is available in a free basic version and in a paid version (with the possibility of using it simultaneously on up to 5 devices) starting from 3.99 euros per month.
- Bitwarden( Windows / macOS / Linux / Android / iOS / iPadOS ) – an open source tool to manage your passwords and encrypt them with a specific code. The program can be integrated with the major web browsers and is available in basic form free of charge for one user or paid for multiple users starting at $ 3.33 per month.
For specific details on installing and using this software, I refer you to my tutorial on how to manage passwords and the one on the best apps for memorizing passwords.
In case of further problems or doubts
Even though you have strictly followed my instructions, is there anything that is still not very clear to you? Has any hitch arisen in the course of construction that you are unable to remedy? I like it a lot! However, you can look at this by going to the online section dedicated to the official assistance for Google Chrome that “big G” has set up on its website. There you will find numerous articles with useful and detailed information about the operation of the famous browser.
To use it, select the reference category from the central part of the page and then the topic of your interest among those proposed to you. You can also find what you need by using the search bar at the top, typing in the reference keyword and selecting the relevant suggestion from those that appear automatically.
You can also take a look at the Google product forum, through which you can receive support and assistance from Google and other users who, like you, use the company’s services. To search for discussions that may interest you, use the bar at the top and then click on the title of the one you want to read from the list that appears (you can also take part in it if necessary).
