If there’s one thing you like to do more than any other, it’s reading. You are a great lover of books of all kinds and all the free moments represent for you the right opportunity to start a new reading. How do you say? Are you leaving for a journey and would like to avoid weighing down your suitcase by carrying volumes upon volumes with you? Well, in that case, don’t worry: you can fix it by downloading free PDFs to be stored directly on the memory of your tablet, smartphone, laptop or eBook reader.

Wandering around the Web, it is in fact possible to find books in PDF format free of charge to be stored on your computer and other devices, so that you can read them directly and comfortably on the move. To download PDF for free, it is enough to appeal to some Internet sites that offer users a huge assortment of titles. Clearly, do not expect best sellers at the top of the sales charts: the books that can be downloaded from the Web are in fact old classics of world literature on which no copywriting is in force or works by emerging writers who have chosen to exploit the Web as a channel of dissemination of their work.

If I convinced you and if, therefore, it is your intention to download PDF for free, I suggest you take five minutes of free time and concentrate on reading the following lines so that you can find out how to stuff your tablet, your smartphone, your computer or your eBook reader of numerous titles which, thus, will not burden the weight of the suitcase.

Preliminary information

Before getting to the heart of the tutorial and explaining how to download PDFs for free, it seems only right to provide you with some information about the compatibility of these files with the various devices and software you can use to read them.

On PC, therefore on Windows, PDF files can be read with all the most common web browsing software, such as Chrome or Edge, or with dedicated readers, such as the very famous Acrobat Reader or the lighter and faster Sumatra PDF.

On macOS, you can take advantage of the aforementioned browsers for Internet browsing, the default Preview software or other dedicated software, such as Adobe’s Acrobat Reader. To learn more, read my tutorial on programs to open PDFs.

On the mobile side, there are many apps you can use to read PDFs, such as Google’s PDF Viewer on Android and the default Books app on iOS – to find out more, read my guide on PDF reading apps.

As for eBook readers, most e-book readers support PDF files, but to transfer files to them (and perhaps optimize them for their screen) you may need some dedicated software, such as Caliber.

The PDF files that I will talk about during the tutorial can be opened with any application and on any device, as they are not protected by DRM (i.e. digital padlocks that limit the use of files on certain applications and devices, for reasons of rights ); should you have to deal with Adobe DRM protected PDFs, use Adobe Digital Editions to be able to open them.

In case you are wondering, it is possible to remove DRMs from books in electronic format. However, this practice goes against the conditions of use of the stores that provide for the download of eBooks in PDF format and, therefore, I will not elaborate on the subject.

Finally, I want to tell you that some sites may allow you to download books only in ePub format or in other eBook formats: well, you can easily convert these files to PDF using Caliber and following the instructions I gave you in my tutorial on how to transform ePub in PDF.

As for the actual download of PDFs, if the documents were opened in the browser instead of being downloaded to the device in use, proceed as follows: to download the PDF on your computer, press the download icon (the one depicting an arrow pointing down or a floppy disk) that you find on the toolbar displayed at the bottom of the browser tab.

How to download PDF books for free without registration

Once the above information is clarified, I would say that you are ready to take action and find out how to download PDF books for free without registration: all you have to do is visit the sites I am about to recommend, choose the work of your interest and press the respective download button.

Project Gutenberg

If you want to download PDF for free, I suggest you first visit the Project Gutenberg site , which hosts hundreds and hundreds of public domain eBooks in all languages ​​of the world and in all the most varied file formats, including PDF.

To download free PDF from Project Gutenberg, click here to connect to the home page of the website and press the search field located at the top left. Then type in the title of the book you want to download and then click on the magnifying glass icon to start the search procedure.

Once the search results page is displayed, click on the title of the book you wish to download. Wait for the new web page to appear, then click on the PDF format among the various solutions available for download. If you cannot find the PDF format among the various types of files in which the book is available, click on the item more files… .

The PDF download will start automatically and free of charge.

Project Gutenberg, as already mentioned, hosts works in many different languages: if you want to browse only those in Italian, visit this page of the site .

Library of Italian Literature

Another excellent solution to download PDFs for free is to contact the Italian Literature Library. This site hosts the works of historical authors, such as Giacomo Leopardi and Dante Alighieri, all in PDF format.

If you want to download free PDFs from the Italian Literature Library, click here, in order to connect to the main page of the site.

Then, press the works on the left, click on the letter representing the initial of the title of the PDF you want to download and, once the results page is displayed, click on the title of the book of your interest.

Alternatively, you can search for books by author, pressing the authors on the left and then selecting the initial of the author’s name you are interested in.

At this point, the PDF book of your choice will open directly in a new tab of the web browser you are using.

Free Ebook

If you prefer the works of emerging authors to the great classics of literature, I highly recommend you visit the eBook Gratis site, which contains only ebooks in Italian and only works by contemporary authors who have decided to publish their works online at no cost.

The works hosted belong to the most disparate genres: from horror stories to essays dedicated to the world of technology, passing through adventure novels, romantic stories and much more. Almost all ebooks are available in PDF format (otherwise they are in ePub) and their download does not require registration.

To proceed in this sense, connected to the main page of Free eBooks, click on the Free Books item at the top and browse the list of available works. Unfortunately there is no subdivision by genres, but only a list to browse, using the numbered pages at the bottom of the screen. Alternatively, you can use the search bar on the right sidebar to search for a book based on its title .

Once you have identified the ebook you are interested in, click on its cover image, then on the down arrow icon in its description sheet and that’s it: the book will be downloaded to your device.

ManyBooks

Even ManyBooks is another great website through which you can download free PDF and enrich their own library with new titles. The site allows you to find books in all major languages ​​of the world (including Italian) and includes numerous classical works and books by independent writers. However, it requires registration or authentication via social media to allow the various titles to be downloaded.

If you want to download free PDFs from ManyBooks, click here, in order to connect to the website of the service. Then choose a literary genre or type, in the search field at the top, the title of the book you would like to download, then press the Enter button on the keyboard.

Once the search results are displayed, presses on the title of the book you think you will like, then click on the Free Download button and log in to the site. If you do not have an account yet, fill out the form that is proposed to you with your name, email address and password or, alternatively, authenticate through your Facebook profile or your Google profile, by pressing one of the appropriate buttons displayed on the screen.

Once logged in, select your favorite literary genres, go ahead, choose the PDF as your preferred file format, refuse the subscription to the newsletter and click on the Download now button, to download the selected book.

FeedBooks

Another great site that allows you to download books for free is FeedBooks. It provides users with a rich catalog consisting mainly of works on which the copyright has no longer been in force. However, these are mostly ePub files, which are then converted to PDF.

If you are interested in this solution and want to download books for free using it, click here to connect to the FeedBooks Website. Once the FeedBooks web page is displayed, presses on the Public domain item located at the top right. Once this is done, use the Categories menu (in the left sidebar) to select a literary genre of your interest and view the related works available for download.

Alternatively type, in the search field located at the top right, the title of the book you want to download and then press the Enter button on the keyboard to start the search.

Once the search results page is displayed, click on the book of your interest, then click on the Download button and the free download of the book will start.

How to download free PDF from Google

If your intent is not only to download books in PDF but also other documents in the aforementioned format, I recommend that you do a Google search.

Yes, you read that right! The famous search engine allows you to search, and then download, documents in PDF format, filtering the search results.

To find only PDF files with Google, perform a search with the title of the document of your interest followed by the operator filetype: pdf. By adding “filetype: pdf” to the search terms, you will only find documents in PDF format. Convenient, right?
