How to upload a book to Kindle

If you fear that loading a book on Kindle is a long and complicated operation, you are very wrong: soon, you will find that everything is very simple! Before proceeding, however, it is good that you know that Kindle devices are not able to read all eBook formats available on the Internet: Amazon readers, in fact, only support files in MOBIAZWPDFDOCX format/ DOC , RTF and TXT .

Books in ePub format, as well as other ebook formats not listed in the list, are not supported, but even in this case you have nothing to fear: it is possible to easily “transform” books from one format to another (eg . from ePub to MOBI) using special conversion programs, such as the Caliber software (which I will talk about more later on ). To find out more, I refer you to reading my tutorial dedicated to ePub programs, my guide to Caliber and my in-depth study on how to transform ePub into PDF: I’m sure they will be very useful!

The titles loaded on the Kindle, as well as on the device itself, will be available on all other devices associated with the same Amazon account: not only other Kindles but also smartphones and tablets (via the Kindle application for Android and iOS / iPadOS ) and on PC, via the Kindle application for Windows and macOS and the online reader Kindle Cloud Reader.

Note: Kindle devices do not support DRM-protected books other than Amazon’s, such as Adobe’s ACSM files. In most cases, certain contents will have to be enjoyed using specific PC software or apps for smartphones and tablets.

How to transfer books to Kindle from PC

After eventually converting the books in your possession into a format supported by the Kindle, if necessary, you can transfer them to a Windows PC with extreme ease. First, therefore, connect the eBook reader to the computer using the supplied USB cable: a few moments later, a Windows notification message should notify you that the device has been recognized.

When this happens, go to the PC, open the File Explorer, clicking on the yellow folder icon located in the taskbar, and select the item Kindle, residing in the left sidebar. If you do not find it, first select the item This PC and then double-click on the Kindle drive icon.

The game is practically done! To load a book on your Kindle, all you have to do is copy it or move it to the documents / internal documents folder of the device (the name varies depending on the model of eBook reader in your possession), using the most classic copy-e – paste. Once you’ve finished copying the file – or files, if you intend to upload multiple books – you just have to disconnect your Kindle from your PC.

If everything went smoothly, the icon of the book you just copied should be available in your library.

How to transfer books to Kindle from Mac

The steps to take to transfer books to Kindle from Mac are very similar to those already seen for Windows. So, after connecting the eBook reader to your computer via USB cable, wait a few moments for it to be recognized and double-click on the Kindle icon which, in the meantime, should have appeared on the macOS desktop.

If this does not happen, open a Finder window by clicking on the smiling face symbol located on the Dock and then click on the Kindle item, resident in the Locations pane (located on the left). To load a book on the reader, all you have to do is move its file to the documents folder or internal documents: the name of the latter changes depending on the model of Kindle in your possession.

Once the transfer of the books has been completed and the Kindle is disconnected from the Mac, they will be immediately available in the library of the device (and of the devices connected to the same Amazon account), ready to be “consumed”.

How to transfer books to Kindle via email

If, for some reason, you do not have the USB cable to connect the eBook reader to your computer, you will be pleased to know that you can transfer books to your Kindle via email, simply by auto-sending them to a specific email address. In order for everything to proceed successfully, it is essential that the Kindle is connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi and that the appropriate functionality has been previously enabled on the Amazon site.

To check it, through any computer browser, connect to the Amazon website and, if necessary, click on the Login button and log in with the account associated with the Kindle.

Once logged in, click on the ☰ button located at the top left, then on the E-reader and Kindle eBook item located in the menu that appears and, subsequently, on the item My contents and devices. Once on the next screen, click on the Preferences tab located at the top, locate the wording Personal documents settings and click on it, in order to expand the relevant section.

At this point, write down the e-mail address located in the destination Kindle e-mail settings box (e.g. prova_AbCd @ kindle.com ) and corresponding to the name of the Kindle to which you intend to transfer the books: the latter must sent to the aforementioned email. If, for some reason, you want to change the default address, click on the Edit item, placed in its correspondence.

Finally, you must add your e-mail address to those approved for the receipt of the books: then click on the item Add a new approved e-mail address placed immediately below the E-mail address box, enter the e-mail address to be authorized to the inside the appropriate field and click on the Add an address button.

Once the service has been configured, to send a book to the Kindle, all you have to do is send an email message to the device’s address, using one of the authorized mailboxes, inserting the file of your interest as an attachment. Upon receipt, the book in question will be automatically added to the Kindle library.

How to upload books to Kindle with Caliber

Earlier, I mentioned Caliber when talking about programs for converting eBooks from one format to another: not everyone knows, however, that this software also allows you to quickly load digital books into the Kindle’s memory. In particular, the software allows you to import, convert and transfer files in CBZCBRCBCEPUBFB2HTMLLITLRFMOBIODTPDFPRCPDBPMLRBRTF formats, TCR and TXT.

If you have not yet downloaded the program, connected to its website, click on the icon of your operating system (e.g. Windows ) and click on the Download Caliber link, located on the next page, corresponding to the operating system icon chosen.

Once the download is complete, start the file obtained (e.g. caliber-xyzmsi ) and, if your is a PC with Windows, put the checkmark next to the wording I accept the terms in the License Agreement and complete the setup by clicking on the InstallYes and Finish buttons. Following this operation, the software should open automatically; alternatively, you can start it using the icon that has been created in the meantime on the desktop, or in the Start menu.

If, on the other hand, yours is a Mac, after starting the .DMG file downloaded previously, use the proposed window to drag the Caliber icon into the Applications folder of the Mac. To start the program, then open the Launchpad (the icon in the shape of a colored grid or rocket located on the Dock ), click on the Caliber icon and then press the Open button, to overcome the restrictions of macOS against non-certified developers (you must do it only the first time).

After opening Caliber, select the language to use for the program, specify the folder in which to store the digital library and click on the Next button. Subsequently, indicate the brand and model of eBook reader in your possession (eg Amazon Kindle Paperwhite ) and click on the Next button twice consecutively and then on Finish, in order to complete the guided configuration.

Once you have reached the main screen of the program, click on the button dedicated to the Caliber Library and, to insert the titles you want to send to your Kindle, click on the Add button and select them using the File Explorer / Finder panel that appears on the screen. To make a multiple selection, press and hold the Ctrl or cmd keys.

Now, if necessary, convert the imported titles into one of the native Kindle formats, such as AZWMOBIPDF or TXT: to do this, click on the cover of the book on which to intervene (to select multiple books together, help with the Ctrl/cmd) and then on the Convert Books button, located at the top. Then specify the format in which to convert the book and click the OK button to start the conversion.

We’re almost there: to sort the Caliber library based on the available formats, expand the Formats section, located in the left sidebar, by clicking on the arrow symbol next to it. Now, after connecting the Kindle to the computer via USB, select the eBook format of your interest (eg MOBI ), locate the name of the book to send to the device, right-click on it and select the items Send to device> Send to main memory from the displayed context menu.

Once the transfer has taken place, you will see the wording Main appear next to the name of the book (s) ; when this happens, you can safely disconnect your Kindle from your computer and immediately start reading the newly transferred titles. To learn more about how Caliber works, I refer you to reading the specific guide that I have entirely dedicated to the program.

How to download books to Kindle for free

EBooks are never enough for you and, for this reason, would you like to get some free books to read directly on your trusty reader? Also in this case I think I have some little “tips” to give you.

First of all, I suggest you take a look at the section dedicated to free eBooks on the Kindle Store, where there is a vast amount of books at no cost, which can be read directly online or downloaded on Kindle apps and devices.

If you have an Amazon Prime account, however, you can access for free a part of the titles available on Amazon Prime Reading; again, as another option, you can evaluate Kindle Unlimited, a service that, at a cost of € 9.99 / month, gives you free access to over 20,000 titles in Italian (and a million in other languages). Why am I reporting it to you? Simple: the first 30 days of subscription are free and the subscription can be deactivated at any time.

To learn more about the services I’ve talked to you about so far, I suggest you take a look at my specific guide on how to download books for free on Kindle , in which I have given you all the details of the topic.

Finally, if you are not interested in taking books from Amazon catalogs, I would like to point out the existence of numerous sites, such as Project Gutenberg, Wikisource and FeedBooks, which offer the possibility of downloading free titles in a free and completely legal way: I have talked about in my tutorial dedicated to sites to download books for free.

Clearly, the downloaded files must be converted into a format compatible with the Kindle reader (if necessary) and transferred to the latter, using one of the methods that I have shown you in the course of this guide.
