How to play Among Us

You’ve been hearing a lot lately about a game called Among Us . You see in every corner of the Web his little space men “decorated” in various ways and, intrigued by this enormous success, you have decided to deepen your knowledge of the videogame in question. That’s the way it is, right? Then let me help you learn more.

Among Us is a multiplayer title that will take you through the long, cold corridors of a drifting spaceship. You and the players who join the game will have the task of carrying out small tasks (tasks) of restoration and maintenance to put the spaceship in order and get back on the right navigation route. But… there is a “but”: among you there is an impostor who will have the task of sabotaging the mission and eliminating all the players, one by one. Can you find out who it is before the mission fails?

In short: if you are looking for a fun, engaging video game that allows you to play with friends or family, near or far, Among Us could be the game for you. Whether you have a smartphone, a tablet, a PC or a Nintendo Switch, you can play with anyone who has the title installed. But let’s not waste any more time, in this tutorial I will explain the details of the game and guide you step by step in understanding how to play Among Us on all platforms (the game method always remains the same). I wish you a good read and, above all, a lot of fun!

Minimum requirements

There are many ways to play Among Us. Before explaining them in detail, however, it is my duty to explain the minimum requirements to be respected for the correct functioning of the game.

• If you have an Androiddevice , it must have OS version 4.4 or later and at least 76MB of free memory space.
• If you have an iPhone / iPad, it must be equipped with at least iOS 10 or iPadOS and must have at least 193MB of free memory space.
• If you want to play from a PC, Windows 7 or higher operating system is required, at least 1GB of RAM and 250MB of hard disk space, and a graphics processor with support for DirectX 10 or higher is required. Last, but not least, you need a Steam account to be able to purchase the game (which is only available in digital version, at the standard cost of around € 3.00). If you have a PC with good performance you can consider installing an Android emulator, such as Bluestacks and installing the free Android app on the PC. Take a look at this article of mine to learn more about the topic.
• If you have a Nintendo Switch, you need a Nintendo Account to access the eShop and purchase Among Us (which was released digitally only and costs around € 4.00).

An internet connection is also required to play Among Us . You can use the home connection or, in the case of mobile devices, the 3G / 4G / 5G connection (in this case always keep an eye on the consumption of Giga, so as not to run out).

Finally, I would like to underline that Among Us has not yet been translated into Italian and, therefore, a minimum knowledge of English is required to fully enjoy the title.

How to install Among Us

Once you have verified the minimum requirements, you can proceed with the download of the game. As for the mobile sector , Among Us is available for free for Android and iOS / iPadOS . To install it, all you have to do is access the store of your device, search for it and start the download.

If you have an Android smartphone or tablet , find the Play Store app in your apps menu; once launched, tap the Search apps and games field at the top of the display and type “Among Us” , then tap the Search button .

Wait a moment for the search result, the Among Us game should appear as the first result or among the first apps. When you have identified it, tap it to enter its tab (alternatively, if you are reading this tutorial directly from your device, you can press on the link I gave you before and directly view the Among Us tab in the Play Store) and then tap the install button .

When the progress bar comes to an end and the installation is finished, the install button will change to Open , tap it to start the game. If you have a smartphone or tablet without Google services, you can get Among Us from one of the many alternative stores for Android .

Do you have an iPhone / iPad ? In this case, to download Among Us, just tap the App Store icon on the Home screen and then the Search icon at the bottom right; from here you can type “Among Us” and press the Search key again .

Once you’ve found the game from the search result, it should be the first app shown, tap its Get button . To confirm the download, you may be asked for authorization using Face ID , Touch ID, or Apple ID password . Once the installation is complete, you can start the game by tapping on the Open button or selecting its icon in the Home screen / App library.

If you have a PC , to download Among Us you need a Steam account : Valve’s famous digital video game distribution platform. If you don’t have one yet, follow my guide to create it for free. Once you have your Steam account, you can download and install the platform client for Windows by following my guide dedicated to the topic.

Once Steam is installed on Windows, start it and log into your account; then click on the menu STORE , top left, type “Among Us” in the search field that appears at the top right and press send key.

The game will appear among the first results: click on it to enter its tab, then go down slightly and click on the Add to cart button . On the next page, click on the Buy for me option and choose a valid payment method from those supported, such as credit card or PayPal . At the end of the purchase, you will be able to download and install the game, which you will always find in the LIBRARY menu (above).

If you have a PC with good performance and don’t want to spend money, you can consider the option of installing an Android emulator, eg. BlueStacks , and run the game in the version for Android devices: read this tutorial of mine to understand how to do it.

Finally, if you have a Nintendo Switch , you must first connect a Nintendo account to the console: if you have not already done so, you can follow my simple guide ; then, from the main screen (the Home menu ), you can tap on the Nintendo eShop icon and type the title “Among Us” in the search field .

Once you have identified the game, press Proceed to Purchase , the game will be downloaded and installed automatically and at the end you will find it in its nice box of the Home menu . Your account must be linked to a credit card or PayPal account , otherwise you will not be able to proceed with the installation.

If you are not of legal age, you will need to ask your parents for permission who will assist you in purchasing and installing the game.

How to start playing Among Us

After installing the game on your device it’s time to start playing! Among Us offers different types of games: even if similar to each other – the main purpose is always to find the impostor – each allows you to try a different experience. Here they are in detail.

Free play mode

Before throwing yourself into the online game with millions of other users, I suggest that you try the free play mode at least once , so that you can gain affinity with the controls and maps.

If you want to try, click on the FREEPLAY button . This will open a small menu with the names of the maps (spaceships) available, such as THE SKELD, MIRAHQ, POLUS : choose the one you want, by clicking on it, and you will be immediately projected into the game.

Here you can explore the map by moving your space man in all directions, if you click on the map icon at the top right, you can have a nice overview of the whole spaceship (or space station, depending on the map chosen). Note that the points of interest indicated with a yellow exclamation point are distributed on the map, you can move both with the map open and with the map closed to reach them.

The points of interest are the objectives of your mini missions: approaching one of them you can use the USE command located at the bottom right and you will start the maintenance or repair of that sector. You can also keep track of them from the list located at the top left, under the heading TOTAL TASKS COMPLETED .

Some tasks will require interaction, as in the case of joining colored threads that have been mysteriously cut. In other cases, the little space man will do some small actions in total autonomy, such as uploading and downloading useful data in other sections of the spaceship.

If you manage to complete all the tasks you will have won the game. But I remind you that this game is just a simulation without a team and therefore without an impostor rowing against your work. When you are ready, you can return to the main menu by pressing on the gear icon located at the top right and choosing the Leave Game option .

Local game mode

How to play Among Us with friends ? This is the ideal mode. If you are lucky enough to have friends or relatives who have their device (smartphone, tablet, PC or Nintendo Switch) connected to your same network, you can take advantage of the local game mode which allows you to create a multiplayer match only between you, excluding users of the worldwide network.

To proceed in this sense, all you have to do is click on the LOCAL item in the main menu: here you will have the possibility to create a game or join an existing game, perhaps created by one of your friends or family.

If you want to create a game yourself, first of all type your nickname in the text field above, then click on HOST , now tell your friends or family that they can join your game by running Among Us on their device, then clicking on LOCAL and finally choosing your nickname, which will be visible in the Available Games list .

Public online game mode

This is the game mode that Among Us was born for, here you can play with anyone who has Among Us in the world; you can also play with your friends, just make an appointment and be in Among Us at the same time. From the main menu of the game, click on ONLINE , you will notice 3 possible sections.

If you click on the Create Game option , you will be able to create a game with the preferences you want, such as how many players? Minimum 4 and maximum 10, how many impostors? Minimum 1 and maximum 3.

If you click on Find Game you can choose one of the many games waiting for players and join the game. If you look up you can search for games waiting for players by filtering by map, by language and by number of imposters.

If you click on Enter Code, you can type in an access code for a reserved game (your contact must provide you with the code). In case it was you who created a game (via the Create Game button ), you will notice that code in the central part of the display: you can communicate it to your remote friends if you want to have a private game with them.

I do not recommend using unofficial hacks such as the one to play Among Us with 100 players , unfortunately these changes affect the game’s installation files and make games unstable, subsequently they almost always require you to reinstall Among Us from Steam because it can happen that the game no longer starts correctly due to modified or corrupted files.

After choosing your game mode, you will find yourself in the Lobby which is nothing more than a waiting room. Here you can see connected players like you, in the lower part of the display you can see how many are online and how many players are missing to start, in my case (see the image below) we are 9 online players out of 10, so we wait for you to enter one more player and then let’s get started!

During the waiting period you can move your space man around the room and if you approach the open laptop located in the center of the room, you can click on USE at the bottom right and customize your astronaut with fun accessories, hats and suits! As soon as all players are connected, the game can begin.

Play Among Us as an impostor or non-impostor

Will you be the impostor or not? this choice is up to the game, it is a random choice and you will understand if you have been chosen as an imposter only as soon as you enter a game Lobby. Remember that the figure of the impostor remains hidden from everyone, only he will know he is.

If while entering a Game Lobby you are chosen as an imposter , your mission will be to sabotage the entire mission by eliminating other players in a stealthy and cunning way, you must act shrewdly and not attract attention, if you you show while you commit a crime, they would understand that you are the impostor and therefore could expel you from the ship, in this case you would lose the game.

As an imposter you have additional qualities compared to other players, such as being able to hack and close room doors to trap a player. Read my guide to know how to close doors in Among Us.

If the Lobby lets you access the game as an ordinary player , your mission will be to complete all the game tasks (remember that you find the tasks to be completed on the map and in a small list at the top left).

If you and the crew manage to complete all the tasks before the impostor manages to sabotage the mission, you win. But it’s never that simple.

As you run to your next task, I suggest you keep your eyes peeled, you know there is an impostor in the crew and you may notice strange occurrences that lead you to his identity. If you have a premonition of which player could be the impostor, click on the large emergency button in the main room of the map, located in the center of a round table with the word Emergency .

Group chat

When you click on the Emergency button a console will open that will allow you to chat with all players. Here you can discuss and express your opinion on the alleged impostor. You have to try to be convincing, because the chat will only be available for a few seconds (the duration of a chat can be decided at the beginning of the game only by the user who starts the online game, therefore by the HOST, if you were to start a new online game you can decide how many seconds the chat window will last for players).

At this point the other players will want to understand whether or not to trust your words, and you too will have to be very careful whether or not to trust the words of others: it is more than obvious to think that the impostor will do everything to appear a common member of the crew and therefore could actively participate in the chat to double-cross.

Voting

When the group chat window is closed by time-out, each player will be able to vote against one crew member. You will therefore have to say in your opinion who the impostor is .

To vote, all you have to do is click on the box of the player who you believe to be the unknown saboteur, pay attention to the time-out located in the lower right corner, even the vote has a time limit. If you are not sure maybe it is better not to vote, but this must be your personal evaluation that will determine the outcome of the game every time.

The user who receives the most votes against is expelled from the spaceship as an impostor: this is a very delicate step, because the risk of voting an innocent user is very high if you do not actively collaborate (in this case you risk losing a crew member in vain).

The voting system can also be customized at the start of the game by whoever starts the game online: if you started the game, before the Lobby you can choose how much time to allow for voting and you can also decide whether the votes attributed to the players will remain anonymous. or not. Generally after voting, all players can see who voted who.

If you and the crew are successful with the votes, the impostor will be kicked off the ship and the game will end in a win.

If a crew member who is not actually the impostor is kicked out, the game will continue until another player presses the Emergency button , or until the real impostor eliminates everyone and remains the only survivor.

If you are the imposter and get voted on, then kicked off the ship, you will have lost the game and the crew will win the game.

If you are not the impostor and you are expelled for a hasty vote or you are eliminated by the impostor between a corridor and the other, you can continue the game as a “ghost”, but you will not be able to interact with anything or anyone. Let’s say you can act as moral support by wandering the corridors or accompanying the surviving crew members in the accomplishment of their tasks.

Other useful tips

Among Us becomes a lot more fun if you try to customize your little space man , but you will more and more often see the bizarre combinations of accessories and suits of your friends in the Lobby, you can take a cue from the veterans of the game to stimulate your creativity, not must be purchased, from the first game you will have some interesting accessories!

Among Us is a cross-platform game that allows players to challenge each other regardless of the device they are using. However, I suggest you play it on PC, because in addition to the larger display compared to a smartphone or tablet, you will also have physical commands to move your character and interact with the game: keyboard, mouse and controller are much more reactive than to touch controls (although theoretically you could also connect such devices to smartphones and tablets, but these are special cases, moreover the game on mobile remains optimized for touch controls).

For the rest, I can only encourage you to… play! Have fun and experiment with various tactics. You will see that, over time, you will have more and more fun and you will become better and better at finding the imposter or diverting suspicions from you, in case you were!
