How to fix texture issue (pink squares) in Garry`s Mod Half-Life 2

Garry`s Mod is the world famous mod for the game Half-Life 2. In fashion, you find yourself in a kind of sandbox, where you can experiment with physics and objects. Since 2006, “Garik” (the slang name for the mod) has been distributed in incentive separately and contains the HL2 client. If you try to play Garry Mod immediately after downloading and installing it, you will most likely be disappointed. When you join the game, instead of textures, you will see black and pink squares and an ERROR message.

Reason: “gmod” uses a lot of files from “Counter-Strike” that were not included in the installer.

There are two solutions:

  • Download and install 1 of the games – “Conter-Strike Source”, “Half-Life 2”, “Portal”.
  • Download textures separately, then replace and add them to the mod folder.

In this article, we will take a closer look at the options for getting out of the situation.

Solving problems with textures

Download and install via Steam one of the games listed above. The method does not guarantee a solution to the problem, especially if the listed games are already installed. Go straight to more powerful methods.

  • Downloading and replacing the missing parts of the client.
  • Download archive

(you need to wait a few seconds). It contains the most used textures, models, etc. (approximately 700MB).

  • Find the “gmod” addon folder. She is inside the steam. Path example:

“C: Program Files (x86) SteamsteamappscommonGarrysModgarrysmodaddons”.

  • After following the path, create a new one inside with the name: “CSS Content Addon”.
  • Unpack the zip archive from the previous paragraph into it.
  • Done, now you have everything you need to play.

The second way is to replace files manually.

  • Download the following files

(the set of files is not much different from the previous one).

  • Find the Addons folder (described in the previous paragraph).
  • After following the path, create a folder named: “CSS”.
  • Unpack all files here.
  • Go back to the garrysmod folder and open cfg.
  • Mount.cfg file using any text editor.

Insert your path to the CSS folder in quotes.

  • Remove the double “/” in front of the strike.

You should have the following entry:

Note: the path on your PC is your own (!).

  • Save -> done.
