If you are using macOS, on the other hand, open the .dmg package obtained and drag the program icon to the Mac Applications folder. Then, right-click on it, select the Open item from the context menu and press the Open button in the pop-up window on the screen, in order to open the application, however, bypassing the limitations imposed by Apple on applications from non-certified developers (an operation that must be carried out only at the first start).

Now that, regardless of the operating system used, you see the HandBrake window, select the video you want to convert via the menu on the right (if it is not visible, to make it appear click on the Open Source button at the top left). Alternatively, you can drag the file directly into the program window.

Now, expand the menu for choosing presets by clicking on the Presets button at the top right and select the conversion profile you are interested in. In the event that the default settings for the profile you have selected are not to your liking, you can change them by acting on the items and menus in the tabs in the center of the above window, by acting on the output format, on the audio, on the video resolution etc.

Finally, press the Browse button located at the bottom right and specify the location where you want to save the output file, then press the Start Encode button located at the top to start the conversion process.

Adapter (Windows / macOS)

Another great free video converter that, in my opinion, you would do well to put to the test is Adapter. It is a free software that can convert all major video file formats to each other: MP4, AVI , MKV, WMV , MOV, FLV etc. It has a nice user interface, is quite intuitive and provides users with numerous options to choose from to better act on their files. It is available for both Windows and macOS and is completely free of charge.

To download it to your computer, go to its website and click on the Download Adapter button at the top of the page.

Keep in mind that, both during the installation procedure of the program on Windows and on macOS, you may be offered to download and install FFMPEG (it is essential for the program to function properly ) and VLC (a famous multimedia player I told you about in depth in my guide on the subject ).

Now that regardless of the operating system you are using, you see the Adapter main window, click the Browse button and select the movie you want to convert. Alternatively, drag the file you want to act on into the program window.

At this point, click on the Video drop-down menu located at the bottom and select the output format you prefer from it, or the device on which you intend to play the video after conversion.

If you are not satisfied with the default settings for the conversion profile chosen, modify them by acting on the right sidebar (if it is not visible, you can recall it by pressing the button with the gear wheel at the bottom) and then intervene on bitrate, resolution etc.

Finally, click the Convert button located below to start the conversion process. By default, the converted videos are saved in the same location as the source files. If you deem it necessary, however, you can change the output location by acting on the Directory section of the program settings.
