How to make a garage in Minecraft

If you are wondering how to make a garage in Minecraft, know that, of course, you will need to gather some materials first. These will be useful for creating the circuit that will make the garage usable, so just keep reading this tutorial to learn how to build it. The directions apply to both Minecraft Java Edition for PC and Minecraft Bedrock Edition for Windows 10 and later, mobile devices and consoles.

Resources needed

The first element you need to create the garage circuit, of course, is Redstone Dust. You can find it underground, precisely between the Y-axis 15 and -63, and it is more concentrated in the lower part.

You also need some Redstone torches. To create them, open your inventory and place 1 Staff and 1 unit of Redstone Dust inside the crafting area.

You also need Redstone repeaters. To create them, you must open the Workbench and place 3 units of Stone in the lower layer, 2 units of Redstone Torches on the sides and 1 unit of Redstone Dust in the center.

Later you also need some Pistons; in case you don’t know how to create them, I refer you to my guide where I explain how to make a piston in Minecraft. You will also need some sticky pistons, so if you need directives to create these too, I invite you to consult my guide where I show you how to make a sticky piston in Minecraft.

Also, to make this type of circuit work, you need some blocks subject to gravity. You can choose between SandConcrete Dust and Gravel.

Finally, to activate the circuit, you need to equip yourself with a couple of Buttons. You can create them simply by placing 1 unit of the material you want them made of – StonePolished Blackstone or Wood – into the crafting zone.

Of course, you will also need some blocks that will actually make up the garage. The choice of the latter is totally subjective, but if you want a realistic effect I suggest you use gray-colored blocks, such as polished Andesitelight gray concrete or smooth stone.

Creation of the garage

Once you’ve gathered the materials you need, it’s time to take action. To create a garage in Minecraft, the first thing to do is to create the space for the circuit. Then start by digging 5 blocks down and making a hole 3 blocks deep. The width, on the other hand, is variable according to your preferences, but remember to leave 2 blocks of length free, as you will have to place useful objects for the circuit. In my case, the garage I build is 4 blocks wide, so the total length of the underground space is 6 blocks.

After creating the appropriate space, place 4 sticky pistons facing upwards starting from one of the two sides and cover them with a horizontal layer made of 4 pistons, always facing upwards.

Next, you have to place a layer of blocks subject to the gravity of your choice from those listed in the previous chapter, covering the pistons up to the surface. On top of them, then, place a 3-block high layer made of the material you want the garage to be made of.

Now go back to the lowest layer of the pistons and place 4 Redstone Repeaters behind them. Each of these must be set to 2 ticks, so right-click once on each repeater.

Behind the repeaters, place 4 units of Redstone Dust. At the end of the last one, place an additional Redstone Repeater, turned towards the Redstone Dust, and set this to 2 ticks as well.

At this point, place any block in the lower right corner and then immediately place another block to the left of that one, starting from one block higher. Next, create a layer of 8 blocks starting from the bottom left corner and 2 blocks high, so that these are level with the layer of blocks attached to the pistons.

Next, place 4 units of Redstone Dust on the outermost side of the layer and 4 Redstone Repeaters on the innermost side, so that they are facing the gravity block layer.

Finally, you need to bring the circuit to the surface. On the right side of the hole, just after the lowest Redstone Repeater layer, place any block 2 blocks high. Above it you must place 1 unit of Redstone Dust, while on the side facing the entrance you must place a Redstone Torch.

Now place another block at the height of the surface exactly in the upper right corner of the hole and place 1 unit of Redstone Dust and a Redstone Torch exactly as you did with the previous block. If you’ve done everything correctly, the first redstone flashlight should go out and the blocks you used to create the garage should be pushed into the air.

On top of the Redstone Dust unit, place another block of your choice and place a Button on both the entrance and exit sides.

Now that the bottom is done, you need to build the top one. Start by creating a layer of 4 blocks to your liking on top of the materials you used to build the garage. On top of them, then, place two layers of 4 Pistons, each of them facing downwards.

Next, place another block on top of the one with the Buttons and place 2 Buttons there on the entrance side and the exit side as well. On top of the block, then, place the following materials on top of each other in the same order: a Redstone Torch, a block of your choice, another Redstone Torch, an additional block of your choice and finally 1 unit of Redstone Dust. If you did everything correctly, the topmost flashlight should have gone out.

At the height of the torch that has gone out, place a horizontal layer of 6 blocks, on top of which you must place 6 units of Redstone Dust. Repeat the same process over the latter, then place 6 blocks horizontally and coat them with 6 units of Redstone Dust.

At this point, the garage is fully functional. The last step you are missing is to coat the circuit with the blocks of your choice, being careful not to obstruct it.

In any case, you can already use the buttons you placed just now to activate and deactivate it. The lower one is used to open the garage, while the upper one is used to close it.

Mod to make a garage on Minecraft

If you are looking for a more efficient method to create a garage in Minecraft, then you could resort to using a mod. Thanks to it, in fact, you can implement additional content within Minecraft, allowing you to use objects or mechanics not present in the basic version of the game.

Before explaining how to use a mod, however, I want to clarify that these are only accessible in the Java version of Minecraft, which is only available on PC. This means that if you are using the Bedrock version of Minecraft, which is the one available on Windows 10 and later, consoles and mobile devices, unfortunately, you will not be able to use them.

Also, I invite you to pay attention to the sites you visit when you want to download unofficial content (such as mods for Minecraft), as you could run into pages containing malware that could damage your computer. Make sure, therefore, to always check the reliability of the sites you visit.

Having made the necessary premises, before downloading a mod on Minecraft you need to get Forge, which is a client made specifically to read the game’s mods. In case you don’t know how to install it, I refer you to my guide where I explain how to install Minecraft Forge.

When you have downloaded Forge, you can proceed to install the mod you want to use as well. In this case, I suggest you use the MalisisDoors, which adds various types of doors, including the garage door.

The MalisisDoors is available for download on the official page of the mod. To download it, just click on the Download button and wait for the download to start. I also recommend that you check the version of the mod, which must coincide with the version of Forge you own, otherwise this may not work properly.

For this specific mod you also need an additional file, namely MalisisCore, otherwise it won’t work properly. Again, just go to the official page of the file and press the Download button to get it.

When you have downloaded both files of the mod, all you have to do is place them inside the Minecraft mod folder. To do this, call the Run menu by pressing the key combination Win + R, in which you have to type % appdata% and then press Enter. Finally, get to the path .minecraft > modsand transfer the two files inside the folder. If you are having trouble finding these folders, I recommend that you turn on the display of hidden folders.

If you are using Minecraft using a Mac, of the mod folder it is on a different path, namely the following: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods.

The last step to perform is to open the Minecraft client and launch the version suitable for the mod. Then click on the Installations tab and then on the New Installation button.

At this point, click on the box under VERSION and select the version of Forge corresponding to that of the mod. Finally, click on the Save and Play buttons.

That’s all: now the MalisisDoors mod is loaded inside the Minecraft client, and it’s fully functional. In any case, I advise you to use it only in worlds created with the version of Forge you are using, otherwise, you may run into some problems.

The mod adds dozens of different types of doors, including the one that is the protagonist of this guide, namely that of the garage. The latter can be crafted in the workbench, placing 5 units of wooden planks and 1 unit of glass inside.

Each of these blocks is 1 × 1 wide, so to build a complete garage door you will need more blocks to be placed on top of each other, or on the sides, to create a real working garage that can be activated via simple levers or buttons. That’s all! Easy, right?
