How to make a Minecraft roof
If you are wondering how to make a Minecraft roof, the first thing to visualize in mind is the type of roof that is best for you depending on what you need.
For example, if you want a roof that takes up as little space as possible, then you can simply create a flat one. If, on the other hand, you want to build a more detailed one, you will need more materials to add dynamism. Anyway, just continue reading this tutorial to find out how to make different types of roofs and, at that point, the choice will be up to you!
Materials needed
Before actually going to make a roof in Minecraft, it’s good to get the materials needed, which vary depending on what you want to build. These, of course, are the same in all versions of the game, so whether you are using Minecraft Java Edition for PC or Minecraft Bedrock Edition for Windows 10 and later, mobile devices or consoles, you can still refer to the directions below.
In addition to the typical building blocks, if you are looking to create a roof that has dynamism, it is essential to have specific blocks. In this regard, the Steps are perfect for this purpose. In case you don’t know how to create them, I refer you to my tutorial where I show you how to make steps in Minecraft.
There is a large amount of materials that can be used for the creation of the steps and you can see them below.
- Copper (all variants)
- Purpur
- Wooden planks (all variants)
- Crushed stone and mossy crushed stone
- Stone
- Bricks
- Stone bricks and Mossy stone bricks
- Bricks of Nether and red bricks Nether
- Sandstone, Smooth Sandstone, Red Sandstone and Smooth Red Sandstone
- Smooth quartz and quartz
- Prismarino (all variants)
- Granite, Diorite and Andesite (all variants)
- End stone bricks
- Deep Slate Crushed Stone, Deep Polished Slate, Deep Slate Bricks and Deep Slate Tiles
- Pietranera, polished Pietranera and Polished black stone bricks
The choice of materials and therefore of the imagination, as you can well see, is very varied, so it all depends on the look you want to give to your home.
Other very important material to add dynamism to a roof in Minecraft are Slabs. To create them, just open the Workbench and place 3 units horizontally of the block you want to use.
The materials that you can use to create the slabs are the same as the steps, which I listed above, in addition to some blocks, namely the smooth stone, the engraved sandstone and the engraved red sandstone.
The last material you need is Campfire. This will serve you when you want to create a fireplace and give it a realistic effect, as this will emit smoke constantly.
You can create this item by opening the Workbench and placing 3 Sticks, 3 Logs and 1 unit of Coal inside it.
Building Minecraft roof
The first type of roof you could build is the simplest one, namely the flat roof. This type of roof is optimal when, as I mentioned in previous chapters, there is the need to build a roof that does not take up too much space, perhaps because there are other buildings above the house.
To build it, all you have to do is grip the material you want to use to cover it and place the blocks at the height of the roof, creating a layer that closes the house. Simple, right?
If you want to add a dash of dynamism, you could try creating a pointed roof. This is the most popular type of roof, both for its ease of construction and for its functionality, since with such a roof it is also possible to exploit the internal space.
To create it, you just need to place the steps of the material you have chosen going up, making them become increasingly narrow and rejoin at the highest point.
Like the pointed roof, you can also make a slightly raised one. This type of roof is very similar, in fact, to the one I showed you earlier, but due to the fact that the roof is not extremely raised, it keeps a low profile.
If you want to create this type of roof, just follow the same procedure as the pointed roof using, however, the Slabs instead of the steps.
If you want to give a more varied look to your roof, you can also make a middle ground between the Steps and the Slabs.
To create such a roof, all you have to do is alternate the use of the Steps to that of the Slabs during the construction of the roof.
If, on the other hand, you are looking to create a roof that is a little more particular, then I recommend that you do a half roof. Not only is it a great way to save resources, since you would avoid using about half of the materials, but it can also be very functional if used properly.
To create this roof, just choose one of the raised ones I showed you throughout this chapter and simply make them halfway. At this point, just close the inner half with blocks of your choice to avoid leaving a hole.
Alternatively, you can also connect the roof with the rest of the house, for example by placing a door at the end of the inner half, so as to make the rest of the roof, which you left uncovered, usable. Also on the latter, you can also place decorations, or cover the glass ceiling, so that you can see the sky from inside the house.
Another popular type of roof for aesthetics is the roof with an overhang. As the definition suggests, this roof is characterized by the presence of a ledge, which you can use, for example, to create a small balcony or to put windows in it.
This type of roof is created, also in this case, starting with the construction of any raised roof among those I have proposed to you. After doing this, select a spot where you want to create the overhang and break the roof in that area to make room for it. Do not forget to use the Steps or the Slabs as I have shown you in the course of this chapter if you want to give dynamism to everything.
An overhanging roof is also a good option, especially from the point of view of functionality. Taking advantage of this type of roof, in fact, given the protrusions, it is possible to use the additional space to place decorations to hang, such as Lanterns or Chains.
Creating this roof is very simple: start with a raised roof from the ones I showed you in the course of this chapter and then use Steps and place them exactly one block under the roof, going outwards.
The last type of roof I propose is the one with the chimney. This type of roof is also among the most popular, especially considering the fact that, despite being very simple to build, the result is very satisfying.
To make this roof, first choose the point where you want to build the chimney. It’s very simple – all you need to do is create a pillar that is hollow inside. I advise you not to make it higher than 5 or 6 blocks, otherwise, it could be unrealistic.
Once this is done, place the Campfire in the pillar, which I showed you how to build in the previous chapter. I recommend that you place it as high as possible (obviously making sure that the block is not visible from the outside); in this way, the smoke from the fire will not be covered by the chimney and will be visible outside.
Mod to make a roof on Minecraft
In case the blocks of the basic version of Minecraft don’t satisfy you enough for creating a roof, I recommend using a mod. Using it, you can add new blocks and mechanics to Minecraft, to modify the game experience according to your preferences.
Before explaining how to download the mods, however, I must warn you that you can only use them on the Java version of Minecraft, which is the one available exclusively on PC. If you are playing Minecraft with the Bedrock version then, that is the one released on consoles, mobile devices and Windows 10 and later, you will not be able to take advantage of the mods.
I also advise you to be especially careful when visiting unofficial sites to download mods, as you may unknowingly stumble upon pages containing malware. For this reason, I invite you to always check the trustworthiness of sites when you browse the web.
Now that I have made the necessary premises, it’s time to download the mod. If you are looking to create a realistic roof, my advice is to use Macaw’s Roofs mod, which adds oblique blocks perfect for creating more dynamic roofs.
The mod can be downloaded directly from its official page: all you have to do to get it is to press the Download button and wait for the download to start. I also invite you to check that the version of the mod coincides with the version of Forge, otherwise, this may not work as it should.
After downloading the mod, you need to move it inside the Minecraft folder. To do this, press the key combination Win + R, which will bring up the Run menu, where you have to type % appdata% and then press Enter.
After running the command described above, you need to reach the Minecraft mod folder via the path .minecraft > mods
. Once you get to this folder, move the mod file into it. If you are playing Minecraft on a Mac, the path to get to the mod folder is different, and it is as follows: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods
(you may need to turn on the hidden folder view ).
After loading the mod into Minecraft, continue by starting the game and clicking on the Installations tab. Inside the tab that appears, press the New installation button and in the VERSION section click on the box and select the Forge version that coincides with that of the mod. Finally, hit the Save and Play buttons.
Now that the mod has been loaded into Minecraft, you can proceed with the creation of the roof using the new blocks introduced by Macaw’s Roofs. The mod introduces several oblique blocks and these are also equipped with different angles, so it is possible to create very varied roofs.
The mod, however, is not limited to adding oblique blocks, but even introduces new ones, which can also be created in the Survival version. Thanks to them, it is possible to create original roofs from every point of view. In short, you really have no more excuses not to let your imagination run wild!
