How to put Samsung call waiting: standard procedure
The simplest way to activate call waiting on a Samsung smartphone, or on a tablet from the same manufacturer with SIM support, is to use the settings built into the Android operating system.
To begin, open the application, then Phone device, touching the ‘ icon of the handset is often placed in the bottom of the device’s home screen (or in the app drawer, if you removed earlier), tap the button (⋮ ) located at the top right and touch the Settings item located in the menu that appears.
Now, touch the Additional services item, visible in the screen that appears later, wait a few moments for the device to retrieve the status of the services, locate the Call waiting item and move the lever located in its correspondence from OFF to ON.
After a few moments, the call waiting function should be active and the corresponding lever should be colored. To deactivate the service, repeat the same procedure and move the switch dedicated to Call Waiting from ON to OFF. Easier than that ?!
How to set up Samsung call waiting: operator codes
Alternatively, you can activate or deactivate call waiting on a Samsung smartphone or tablet (but also on other devices, both Android and iOS / iPadOS) using the codes made available by mobile phone operators.
Unlike what happens for the answering machine, the codes to activate, deactivate or check the status of the call waiting are the same for all telephony operators: therefore, the steps I am about to give you always apply, regardless of the provider of services associated with your SIM card.
To begin with, open the Samsung Phone app, call up the dialer (i.e. the screen for manually dialing phone numbers) by tapping the Keyboard tab located at the bottom left, and dial the code *43#.
Once this is done, touch the handset symbol (i.e. the button to start the call) and that’s it: after a few seconds, you should see a message on the screen, indicating that the service has been activated.
If you wish, in a similar way, you can check if the call waiting is active, by giving the code *#43#, or completely deactivate the service, by typing the code instead #43#.
How to switch between calls
As I already mentioned at the beginning of this guide, when call waiting is active, you will receive audible feedback (a short repeated “beep”) if someone calls you while you are engaged in another conversation.
In this case, your second interlocutor will receive the dial tone, while you can choose whether to accept the incoming call, pause the one you are on, whether to join it to the current communication (only in the presence of VoLTE), or whether ignore it.
In the first case, when you receive the sound alert for the new incoming call, move the device away from your ear (if necessary) or unlock it (if you are using a pair of headphones or external earphones), swipe upwards starting from the green handset and choose whether to answer and pause the previous call (option Put on hold [contact name/number] ) or interrupt the previous call and accept the new one (option End call with [contact name/number] ), by making tap on the most appropriate item for your case.
If you choose to answer the new call by putting the previous one on hold, the first interlocutor will listen to the waiting signal (i.e. two beeps in rapid sequence, at regular intervals) for the entire duration of the second call, or until a new switch is made.
To switch the calls, that is, to switch from the second to the first and vice versa, tap the Swap button corresponding to the name of the call to be resumed, marked by the Wait item ; to merge the phone calls and create a single conversation (function available only when the VoLTE function is active, i.e. communication via the 4G / LTE network), touch the Merge button instead. If you do nothing, you will automatically return to the first active call when the second is interrupted.
If, on the other hand, you decide to ignore the second phone call, the second user will receive the dial tone, until the answering machine is automatically activated after about 6 rings; if the answering machine on busy is deactivated, the busy tone will be emitted after about 11-12 rings.
Call waiting services
You should know that, in addition to the classic call alert via beep, some operators allow you to receive an SMS notification when you have a phone call and your line is not available because the device is turned off, the service unreachable or the line is busy, provided that the telephone answering service is active and the “classic” call waiting for service, however, is not.
The receipt of this category of SMS is independent of the type of smartphone/tablet used: similar services therefore work both on Samsung and on devices of other brands and, generally, the activation of the same must be requested directly from the operator. Below is a list of the call waiting services made available by the major mobile phone operators.
- TIM– “LoSai e ChiamaOra” : this is a service that allows you to receive a notification SMS when you are called and your line is not available. The user who initiates the call will also receive a message when the number becomes free again. The service costs € 1.59 / month, for rechargeable SIMs, or € 0.96 / 2 months, for subscription SIMs. More info here.
- Vodafone– “Call me”: Vodafone’s “Call me” service allows you to receive an SMS with notification of voice calls received in the last 48 hours, when the line is not available. The service costs € 0.12 / day only in case of use, for rechargeable SIMs, and is instead included in the rate for subscription SIMs. More info here.
- WINDTRE– “I searched for you”: this service works in an almost identical way to Vodafone’s “Call me” and costs € 1.50 / month, only after receiving the first notification SMS of the calendar month. More info here.
- Fastweb– “I searched for you”: the service allows you to receive an SMS containing the notification of each voice call received while the line is not available. The service is free and active by default on all Fastweb SIM cards. More info here.
- Iliad– “Secretariat”: this service provides for the receipt of an SMS when a phone call is received and the line is unavailable. The service is free and active by default on all Iliad SIM cards.
