How to use Chrome Remote Desktop to access devices remotely

Want to access a remote computer from another computer or mobile device? You can use “Chrome Remote Desktop” for this task.

Many years ago, accessing a remote computer required complex and expensive software, as well as a high level of technical expertise.

Everything has changed these days. The free Chrome Remote Desktop service makes it as easy as possible to access a remote Windows, Mac, Linux or ChromeOS system from virtually any PC or mobile device. You can access all of your computer’s files and use the interface as if you were sitting right in front of your computer.

Chrome Remote Desktop can be used to log into your personal or work computer, or to view someone else’s system, such as a colleague’s or relative’s computer, for the purpose of providing support.

Setting up and running the service is very easy. In fact, all you have to do is decide which connection script you want to use and then follow a few simple steps to successfully connect.

Note : Chrome Remote Desktop may not work with corporate Google Accounts managed by your organization. In this case, everything depends on the policies of the IT department.

How to use Chrome Remote Desktop to access your own computer

Step 1: Prepare your computer for connection

If you want to access your own computer from another computer or mobile device, open Chrome on the host computer (or download and install Chrome for Windows, macOS, or Linux if it’s not already installed). In Chrome itself, go to the Chrome Remote Desktop service page and click on the round blue download icon in the “Set up remote access” section.

Note : If you see a blue “Enable” button instead of a download icon, then the connection is partially configured. You can skip the next paragraph and follow the instructions below.

You will be prompted to install the Chrome Remote Desktop extension. On the extension page, click the “Install” button and confirm that you want to continue. When you return to the service tab, you will be prompted to name the computer.

You can enter any name that will distinguish your computer from other devices.

When you have specified the computer name, click the “Next” button. On the next screen, you will need to create a PIN with at least 6 characters. It will be needed for secure authentication. To access a remote computer, you will need to sign in to your Google account and enter a PIN. Google says all “Chrome Remote Desktop” sessions are encrypted for added security.

This completes the setup. The operating system may issue a warning asking you to allow access to the application to initiate a remote connection. On some versions of macOS, you will need to additionally grant “Chrome Remote Desktop” permissions in System Preferences. After completing these steps, the Chrome Remote Desktop tab will display information that the computer is connected to the network and is waiting for connections.Chrome Remote Desktop

The computer will be available any time it’s turned on and Chrome is running. Since Chrome usually starts at system boot and runs in the background, the computer will be available almost any time it is running. If you want connections to remain possible for an extended period of time, then you are advised to visit the power management settings to ensure that the system does not hibernate or sleep (even if the display turns off).

If you ever want to disable remote connections, just go to remotedesktop.google.com/access or click on the Chrome Remote Desktop extension icon to the right of your browser’s address bar. Then click on the trash can icon next to the computer name to remove it from the application. Alternatively, you can completely uninstall the app by right-clicking on the extension’s icon and selecting the “Remove from Chrome” option.

Step 2: Connect to your computer from another computer or mobile device

Once your host machine is fully configured for connections, all you have to do is go to the remotedesktop.google.com/access service site in your Chrome browser from another machine. You will need to sign in to Chrome with the same account you used on the host system, and you will no longer need to install any additional apps and extensions. You will simply see the name of the computer, and clicking on it will establish a connection.

After you enter the PIN code, the desktop environment will open and you will be able to freely navigate the remote computer, run any programs and use the PC as if you were in front of it. The panel on the side of the screen provides options for customizing the display and sending complex commands such as Ctrl-Alt-Del. Clipboard synchronization between the current computer and the host computer also works: you can copy and paste text between devices without any problems.

You get full access to the computer in the browser tab. The sidebar offers additional commands and options and can be hidden.

To access a remote computer from a mobile device, you need to download the Chrome Remote Desktop app for iOS or Android . If your phone is signed into the same Google account that was used on your computer, the app will automatically show your computer and allow you to connect to it with a single tap followed by a PIN.Chrome Remote Desktop for Android

After that, you will be able to control the mouse cursor with your fingers. You can scroll the screen and zoom with gestures. On the Android app, if you swipe down from the top of the screen, a control panel will open that allows you to activate trackpad mode. In trackpad mode, one press causes a left click, two presses a right mouse button. You can switch to keyboard mode to open the device’s on-screen keyboard and enter text. On iOS, tap the menu button at the bottom right of the screen to access the same options.

Navigating your computer on your mobile device is done with your fingers and simple gestures.

Of course, this is not the most convenient way to manage a remote computer, and it is not suitable for long intensive work, but it can be useful for quick tasks, such as restarting the system or getting the necessary file.

How to use Chrome Remote Desktop to access someone else’s computer

Step 1: Prepare your computer for connection

If you want to access another person’s computer, then the setup process for Chrome Remote Desktop is a little different. Since you do not have physical access to the host computer, you will need to provide the owner of the computer with instructions on how to set up the connection .

On the computer you want to access, you need to go to the Remote Support section of the Chrome Remote Desktop app.

Then you need to click on the download button in the “How to share a screen” section, then click “Install” to confirm the installation of the Chrome Remote Desktop extension. (If you do not see the download icon, then the extension is already installed, you can continue with further configuration).

Setting up a remote session is slightly different, but the result will be the same.

Return to the original tab and click the “Accept and install” button – the OS will download and install the Chrome Remote Desktop Host file.

Once installed, click “Generate Code” to grant access to another person. After that, the service will generate a one-time access code, which will be valid for 5 minutes.

Share this code with the person you want to give access to your computer. To do this, you can use SMS, email or instant messenger. It remains only to wait for the connection.

Step 2: Connect to your computer from another computer or mobile device

Once you have received the access code, go to remotedesktop.google.com/support and in the How to connect to another computer section, enter the code, and then click the Connect button.

The person with physical access to the host system will need to manually confirm the connection (macOS users will need to additionally grant “Chrome Remote Desktop” permissions in System Preferences). Then you can connect to the computer and fully control it.

If you want to connect from a mobile device, then you need to open a new Chrome tab on your mobile device ( Google Chrome for Android and Google Chrome for iOS ), check the “PC version” checkbox in the browser menu and then go to remotedesktop.google.com/ support . The fact is that the Chrome Remote Desktop mobile application only works with your own account, so it is not suitable for this scenario.

The person with physical access to the host system will need to manually confirm the connection (macOS users will need to additionally grant “Chrome Remote Desktop” permissions in System Preferences). Then you can connect to the computer and fully control it.

The Chrome Web Store hosts the original version of Chrome Remote Desktop, which is no longer officially supported. If you have previously installed this application, then you should uninstall it and use the web service.
